Arn River

Pronunciation: Arn

Map Index: B-4, B-5, C-5, C-6

Location: Central to eastern Aorlan. The Arn River, originating in the rugged wilderness of Thontaur Forest, begins as a fast robust stream winding through the spruce-covered foothills of the Kheleckoros Range. The river then flows steadily eastward until it reaches the Kingdom of Arnheim where it grows in size and become navigable. It then flows through the heart of Arnhiem, a land of bustling river ports, and eventually empties into Norock Bay.

Primary Population: None
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: None

Physical Characteristics: At 390 miles in length, the Arn River is the largest in the world. With a steep descent, the initial stretch of the Arn River flows fast, filled with rapids, jagged rocks, and cascading waterfalls. As the river courses eastward, numerous small streams contribute to its flow. By the point where the river leaves Thontaur Forest, it becomes large enough that canoes can negotiate its waters, although frequent rapids will necessitate many portages. Upon reaching Norhaven, the confluence with the Lorr River significantly expands the Arn's breadth, marking the beginning of navigable waters for commercial vessels. Large flat bottom riverboats ply the waters, making the river the primary artery for travel within the Kingdom of Arnheim. Continuing downstream, the river swells further with the merging of the Ordelvaine River from the north and later the Bherral River from the south. Near the coast, the Arn River widens to several miles in width with its flow becoming the largest in the known world. In the final stretch of the river, near the capital city of Arnheim, the river becomes tidally influenced.

Environment and Ecology: The river often freezes over during the depth of winter. However, this iced in condition usually only lasts for a few weeks in most winters. The river is subject to flooding, usually in the spring after a large warm rainfall event causes massive melting of winter snows in the forest of Thontaur Forest and along the Arn River's tributaries that drain from the Carakoros Range.

Hazards and Challenges: Parts of the westernmost portion of the Arn River have large dangerous rapids that can sneak up on someone in a canoe who doesn't know the river. There are also waterfalls in a few areas.
