Bentrock Hills

Pronunciation: BENT-rock

Map Index: D-3

Location: Southwest Aorlan, west of the southern edge of the Kheleckoros Range

Geography: The Bentrock Hills, situated on the southwest coast of Aorlan, boast a rugged and picturesque landscape shaped by fast-running streams that have deeply incised themselves into the terrain. Towering peaks, cascading waterfalls, and sprawling underground caverns contribute to the hills' fame.

Primary Population: Kharg
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Garuun, Kharz, Valtauri

Climate: The area benefits from a temperate climate, with consistent rainfall throughout the year, nurturing a diverse mix of deciduous trees like maple and beech that cloak the hills in lush greenery. Large grassy meadows offer picturesque views of the hills, famously known for their profusion of springtime flowers.

Fortune smiled upon the Bentrock Hills during the Great Cataclysm, sparing them from the dire cataclysmic upheaval that befell other lands. Minor earthquakes were felt in the land, but they caused little serious damage. As a result, the hills retain their natural beauty and remain a haven for rich deposits of rubies, emeralds, gold, and silver. Precious stones and rare minerals can be found in abundance, but collecting or mining for them will bring trouble as the Kharg dwarves in the kingdom of Aeongol, have laid claim to all the riches of the Bentrock Hills.

Wildlife: Herds of gray deer roam the valleys while packs of wolves lurk in the shadows, searching for prey. Various hawks and eagles spend their days circling above the hills in search of food. Small birds abound. Foxes and bobcats roam the hills.

Humanoids: The Kharg hill dwarves of Aeongol, renowned for their exquisite gold and silver smithing and masterful gem craft, thrive as a treasure trove of precious resources. With cities carved into the very rocks of the hills, the dwarves serve as protectors of the Bentrock Hills. Their vigilance has ensured that the hills are not overrun by evil humanoids. The military strength of Aeongol lies in its formidable army of highly disciplined and battle-hardened dwarven warriors. Trained in the art of war from an early age, they are renowned for their unyielding resolve, unwavering loyalty, and mastery of both axe and shield. The chief adversaries of Aeongol are the barbaric swamp orcs dwelling in the fetid Orc Fens, Nnugorvos along the Orrosi River. These orcs, known for their relentless breeding and vicious nature, pose the primary danger to travelers passing through the realm. Despite Aeongol's best efforts, eliminating the menace of the swamp orcs has proven difficult, as the dwarves, clad in their heavy armor, are ill-suited for combat in the treacherous swamplands.

Monsters: Tribes of hill giants roam the eastern half of the Bentrock Hills. They keep a safe distance from Aeongol as the heavily armed dwarves have no tolerance for giants near their kingdom. The skies also present dangers to the unwary as both griffons and wyverns live in remote parts of the hills.

History: Old legends speak of an enormous evil black dragon that long ago inhabited the Bentrock Hills. He flew through the skies and breathed acid on the land, causing the forests to wither and die. The dragon caused great destruction of the land until it was slain by a small group of famous dwarven warriors, leaving behind tales of their heroism and bravery. Legends claim that the lair of this dragon was never found and massive amounts of wealth awaits the intreped adventurer who finds its lair.

Today: The legacy of the dragon's devastation still visibly lingers today in the western half of the Bentrock Hills. Large areas of grassy meadows, now resplendent with their profusion of springtime flowers, mark the areas where dragons breathe despoiled the land long ago.
