Bherral River

Pronunciation: BEAR-al

Map Index: C-4, C-5

Location: Central Aorlan. The Bherral River, originates in the steeply sloping Kheleckoros Range. Here a multitude of fast flowing streams join together marking the start of the river. The river flows eastward out of the mountains and into the ancient forest of Dinbrethil, The Great Birch Woods. In the middle of its journey throught the forest, the river turns to the northeast. Next it briefly passes through Ceodaria before flowing into its final stretch, which acts as a border between the Kingdom of Arnheim and the forest of Hornwood, Gortaurtillion. The river ends as it flows into the much larger Arn River near the city of Arnmorle.

Physical Characteristics: The Bherral River runs for approximately 360 miles through varied terrain. The upper reaches are only navigable by canoe. Beginning as a swift stream, the river rushes swiftly, cascading over rapids and small waterfalls. While steadily growing larger, the river only becomes navigable by flat bottom river boats after being joined by the Arvale Fork and Verhas Fork Rivers, and then plummeting over the breathtaking 35-foot-high Fjorr Falls. Flat bottomed river boats from Arnmorle often ply this final lower stretch of the Bherral River allowing trade goods to flow between the riverside communities upriver from the falls and the cities along the Arn River. A river landing near the base of the Fjorr Falls facilitates the transfer of goods to carts and wagons for the last leg of the trip.

Environment and Ecology: River traffic slows during the icy winter months, when stretches of the Bherral River freeze over for weeks at a time. River levels remain steady for much of the year although the spring melt of snow in the Kheleckoros Range swells the river considerably.

Hazards and Challenges: Waterfalls and unexpected rapids lend danger to canoeing the upper stretches of the river. Experienced river guides canoe the upper three quarters of the river using their knowledge of the river to keep themselves safe. The great old forest of Hornwood, extending to near the west bank of the lowest stretch of the Bherral River, poses potential hazards for travellers. Feared for its dangerous denizens and known hostility to all outsiders, experienced river travellers know to keep well away from the west bank to avoid trouble. In contrast, the far safer eastern bank, dotted with small, picturesque towns, lies under the protection of the Kingdom of Arnheim.
