Exceptionalism
Exceptionalism is a form of government practiced by the people of Eliond and Foline in the Peninsulan Provinces. Bearing moderate resemblence to medieval feudalism, Exeptionalism revolves around the societal contribution of the individual, or household of individuals.
Initially conceived by Yonwin of the Tinted Coast, Exceptionalism was intended to solve grievances surrounding class divide in the early Peninsulan Provinces by basing the systems of nobility not around bloodline, but service to local and national needs. As it is currently implemented, most exceptional titles are passed down among family members, leading many of its critics to claim it no longer serves its function.
Traditional Exceptional Hierarchy
The hierarchy of titles and positions in Exceptionalism is as follows:
Nobility
- Exalt. The Exalt sits at the top of the chain of nobility, and is one of the few exceptional titles to adhere to a non-bloodline lineage.
- High Court of Featherfall. Positions of the high court do not fall into a traditional exceptional hierarchy, as they answer directly to the exalt.
- Lumin. Lumins are considered the highest rank of nobility aside from the Exalt. They are permitted to operate with a degree of independence from national government.
- Vigil. Bearing strong resemblance to the title of Elevant, Vigils hold additional martial privelages.
- Elevant. Traditional landowning nobility, usually with larger territories.
- Exemplar. Lowest official noble title, Exemplars are subordinate to an Elevant in most instances.
