Elevant
An Elevant is a noble title granted to the ruling household of an Elevancy. The title was first granted as a badge of honor to notable contributors to the First Underdark War by Yonwin, the first Exalt of Eliond. Since then, the title has evolved to serve as a signifier of land-owning nobles.
Qualifications
To qualify for the title of Elevant, a household or individual must hold the title of Exemplar and have garnered sufficient influence among their own territory, as well as neighboring lands.
Duties
An Elevant is tasked with upholding law and order in the territory which they've been granted, including the establishment and administration of new settlements. An Elevant is not permitted to enforce any additional laws other than those instated by the High Court of Eliond.
Benefits
Elevants are afforded a portion of taxes collected from their territory at a rate of two-to-one, with one coin going to the Elevant for every two that go to the state. Elevants are also exempt from tithing in times of war, provided they allocate those funds towards protecting their hold. Lastly, Elevants are allowed to petition either the Exalt, or a nearby Lumin, for additonal funds and resources in times of emergency.
History
At the conclusion of the first Underdark War, Yonwin of the Tinted Coast was given the title of Exalt by members of the Featherfall leadership. With his power, he bestowed the title of Elevant on a number of exemplary households that had contributed something of great value to the war effort. This title came with a grant of land somewhere in the territories of the Peninsulan Provinces, which encouraged peninsulans to settle across the region.
The title was originally used across the whole of the Peninsulan Provinces, but has since retracted to Eliond only, as well as some parts of Foline.
