Grenzgebiet
Geography
The Grenzgebiet is a long stretch of land along the Elathien coast. It's bordered by the The Silverbell Wilds to the west and the Bäckerinnenback Mountains to the south.
The Grenzgebiet is an in-between space that covers rocky shores, sandy beaches, grassy plains, and rolling hills. An erratic water table lies beneath the area and spills into the underground lakes beneath the Bäckerbacks. In addition to stunting the spread of underdark communities in this region, this also means that the Grenzgebiet plays host to an assortment of seemingly sourceless swamps, fens, marshes, bogs, ponds, and rivers.
Fauna & Flora
The Grenzgebiet covers several biomes and is home to hundreds of species of land, aquatic, and avian creatures.
Thick grasses and spindly trees comprise the bulk of plant life, though ceruleaf and sage grow in patches throughout. While not as abundant as they are in the Talsirian Expanse, they fill a similar niche for the folks that live in the region.
Natural Resources
The Grenzgebiet is rich in lumber, game, stone, fish, and fiber. Its lowlands are prone to flooding, but farmers have made the best of it with rice fields and complex irrigation channels.
The land is generally poor for mining, and the coastal beasts are too lean to support a significant source of oil.
History
Between the bounty of the Silverbells, the history of the Bäckerbacks, and the industry of the Kurestral peninsula, the stretch of semi-fertile coast was never very enticing to the societies of Honovi. The Grenzgebiet drew folks wanting to live away from the bustle of cities and the noise of urban life. Settlements are generally few and far between, and most relied heavily on Postknight aid to keep them supplied. Generally, the folks in the Grenzgebiet are relieved to see Postknights returning.
