Azure Arcanum
The Azure Arcanum is a grand arcane college perched on wind-carved cliffs overlooking the glimmering Virellian Sea. It is famed across Mythralune for its deep studies of oceanic and sky magic, its soaring spires of sapphire stone, and the unsettling rumor that it is ruled by Azthalyndar, an impossibly old bookish dragon -- with green scales that are dusted with gold.
Purpose / Function
- Original Purpose: A coastal sanctuary for storm mages and ocean diviners.
- Current Purpose: A formal arcane college drawing students from all over Mythralune, specializing in weather manipulation, deep-sea enchantments, and high illusion. Secretly, also serves to extend Azthalyndar’s influence and gather rare magical lore.
Design
- Shape & Size: A sprawling complex of towers, sky-bridges, open-air lecture terraces, and deep labs tunneled into the cliffside.
- Materials: Sapphire-blue stone quarried from coastal cliffs, studded with opal inlays that shimmer with minor glamours.
- Colors: Blues, silvers, soft greens, and the occasional lightning flash across delicate rune filigree.
Entries
- Main gate is a sweeping arch of stone, guarded by twin statues of robed archmages whose eyes glow faintly.
- Numerous balcony entrances for flying visitors — griffon riders, familiars, even Azthalyndar himself in dragon form.
Sensory & Appearance
- Sight: Wisps of magic curl through the air, forming brief schools of spectral fish. Books flutter on breezes of their own making.
- Sound: Constant low hum of arcane resonance, broken by distant gull cries and crashing surf.
- Smell: Briny air mixed with scorched ozone.
- Touch: Surfaces often tingle faintly, as if charged with static.
Denizens
- Human, elf, and sea-kin students bustling between classes.
- Arcane custodians — minor elementals bound to keep the grounds clean and the runes maintained.
- And, of course, Azthalyndar, often appearing as an aged high elf with storm-bright eyes, quietly observing or guiding lectures.
Contents & Furnishings
- Open plazas lined with rune-circles for practice.
- Lecture amphitheaters carved into cliff edges.
- Libraries with chained tomes that rearrange their own shelves.
- Floating orreries modeling storm patterns.
Valuables
- Unique grimoires of tide-binding and storm calling.
- Crystal phials containing bottled tempests or echoes of siren songs.
- The Depthstone Prism, an artifact that records illusions of distant undersea cities.
Hazards & Traps
- Certain sections protected by warded floors that unleash lightning if crossed improperly.
- Laboratories testing unstable enchantments occasionally burst into brief storms.
Special Properties
The entire college is built atop a confluence of ley lines tied to both sea and sky. As a result, spells here are unnaturally potent — and sometimes misfire in spectacular ways.
Alterations
- Over the last century, new sky-bridges and observation platforms were added to better study seasonal storms.
- Secret vaults tunneled deep into the rock hold Azthalyndar’s personal hoard.
Architecture
- A blend of coastal Virellian arches and impossibly slender towers, defying normal engineering through arcane reinforcement.
- Runic wards flare softly at night, making the whole complex glow like a constellation.
Defenses
- Layers of arcane wards can summon thunderous walls of wind or whip sea spray into slicing blades.
- Bound air elementals patrol high balconies.
History
- 112 AR: Founded as a small mage retreat.
- 189 AR: Azthalyndar assumes direct rule, transforming it into a prestigious college.
- 392 AR: Withstood an attempted coup by rogue mages — storms ravaged the rebels.
Tourism
- Scholars and nobles alike travel to see the illusions that dance over the spires at dawn.
- During certain solstices, the Arcanum opens public terraces for breathtaking storm rituals.
A place where the very air seems charged with salty ozone and latent spells. Winds constantly whisper over terraces, carrying stray illusions of phantom ships or sea creatures. Those who linger may find their thoughts drifting into half-formed prophecies.
