Stormcaller Rotunda
The Stormcaller Rotunda is the Azure Arcanum’s primary grand lecture hall and demonstration space, famous across Virellia for its enchanted dome that simulates the sky in all its moods — from gentle sea breezes to howling hurricanes.
Purpose / Function
Originally built for lectures on weather and sky magics. It now doubles as a hall for public defenses of major theses, visiting mages’ spectacular displays, and diplomatic ceremonies.
Design
- Circular hall roughly 200 ft across, with tiers of seats climbing under a vast sapphire-inlaid dome.
- Runes trace along the ribs of the dome, channeling illusions and mild elemental forces.
Entries
- Four arching doors, each engraved with storm motifs — lightning, rain, gale, cloud.
- Wide enough for crowds to enter swiftly.
Sensory & Appearance
- Light constantly shifts across the ceiling, reflecting sky conditions outside or swirling illusions.
- Scent of rain on stone, sound of distant thunder when the hall is empty.
- The floor is etched with a massive spiral sigil that hums underfoot.
Denizens
Professors giving rousing lectures, groups of wide-eyed apprentices, and occasionally Azthalyndar himself, seated imperiously on a floating dais.
Contents & Furnishings
Floating lecture platforms, rune-slates that rewrite themselves in midair, small cages of wind elementals used in demonstrations.
Hazards & Traps
If the dome’s runes overload, sudden gouts of wind or static bolts can whip across the hall, sending papers — and sometimes students — flying.
Special Properties
The dome is keyed to ley winds and can slightly alter local weather if activated at full power.
Alterations
In 347 AR, new underfloor conduits were added to bleed off excess static after an incident scorched half the amphitheater.
Architecture
Sweeping elven curves fused with storm motifs: stylized thunderheads and chasing wave reliefs across the seats.
Defenses
Hidden glyphs can drop sheets of force to separate crowds, or cause a localized downpour to quell flames.
History
Scene of countless graduation exhibitions — and famously, the Great Wind Duel of 402 AR, which nearly cracked the dome.
Tourism
Visitors love to stand in the center to hear their voices echo back in layered storm sounds.
The air inside is always in subtle motion. Even when calm, a faint breeze ruffles robes and carries scents of salt and ozone. During demonstrations, miniature cyclones or forked illusions of lightning dance harmlessly through the air.
