Headmaster Azthalyndar
Azthalyndar (a.k.a. Arancoryx)
Aracnoryx is an ancient, highly intelligent dragon who has forsaken typical draconic ambitions of hoards of gold or conquest. Instead, he gathers knowledge — amassing vast libraries in hidden forest groves where he pores over mortal and draconic writings alike. He is patient, meticulous, and utterly devoted to scholarship.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
- Exceptionally healthy for his age, but moves with the measured, deliberate pace of a creature who has all the time in the world.
- Not built for brute force; leaner than typical dragons, his musculature is tuned for long flights and delicate movements.
Body Features
- Smooth, interlocking scales with intricate filigree patterns near the joints that look almost etched.
- Frilled spines along his neck and a pair of backward sweeping horns dusted in gold.
Identifying Characteristics
- When reading or thinking, tiny motes of light orbit around his head — manifestations of latent magic tied to his intellect.
- His tail is tipped with a fan-like flourish of gold-dusted scales.
Special abilities
- True Scholar’s Breath: Can exhale a cloud of iridescent spores that temporarily grant visions of historical events tied to the location.
- Draconic Eidetic Memory: Near-perfect recall of anything he has read or witnessed.
- Can telekinetically manipulate dozens of books and quills at once, allowing him to study or write vast treatises simultaneously.
Specialized Equipment
- Wears no armor or jewelry, but has enchanted lanterns and orbs drifting around his library that respond to his thoughts, illuminating texts or projecting illusions to illustrate concepts.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
- Hatched in a deep reef near Virellia but found himself more enamored by the mysteries of lost civilizations than territorial hoards.
- Abandoned traditional dragon kin early, seen as eccentric and even weak by some.
- Over centuries, rescued lost manuscripts from shipwrecks, sacked cities, and even from other dragons' lairs.
Gender Identity
Understands gender mostly in biological terms. Among dragons, roles are tied to mating rituals and seasonal behaviors, largely irrelevant to his life.
Education
- Entirely self-taught — driven to master the histories, philosophies, and magical theories of countless cultures.
- Has pieced together lost schools of magic from scraps.
Employment
- No former employment— sees himself above mortal concepts of employment.
- Currently serves as Headmaster of the Azure Arcanum.
Accomplishments & Achievements
- Reconstructed the entire lineage of an extinct empire from fragmented scrolls.
- Created the Codex of Whispers, a living tome that records rumors and oral histories it "overhears."
Failures & Embarrassments
- Once trusted a mortal archmage who later betrayed him, stealing hundreds of priceless texts.
- Occasionally obsesses over minor historical discrepancies for decades, neglecting larger events.
Intellectual Characteristics
- Possesses an astounding breadth of knowledge spanning thousands of years of history, comparative mythologies, magical theories, linguistics, and the genealogies of countless noble lines (both draconic and mortal).
- His mind constantly cross-references disparate facts, weaving new patterns and insights even from trivia.
- Approaches every question from a place of scholarly rigor.
- Has a near-perfect eidetic memory — can recite entire treatises word-for-word, or visualize exact maps and manuscripts he read centuries ago.
Morality & Philosophy
- Knowledge must be preserved — even dark or dangerous knowledge. Believes hiding truth is worse than wielding it unwisely.
- Rarely acts to stop moral evils unless they threaten libraries or legacies.
Taboos
- Burning books or destroying historical artifacts is unforgivable to him.
- Despises necromancers who erase memories or rewrite histories.
