Rin
The Gateway to Procyon
The Rin System is located at the entry point of The Procyon Sector. It is a three-gate system that holds the sole jump path deeper into the Hegemony. This strategic position, coupled with its rich natural resources, makes it more prominent than its relatively small population would suggest.
Colonized just over a century ago by House Nim-Amar, Rin was never a priority for the powerful Malklaith Hegemonic House. Instead, it serves as a training ground for young House members or a punitive assignment for those who fail. Consequently, development resources are minimal, and arable land is scarce, leading to a modest populace. For this reason, the cultural heart of the region remains in the more distant Brekk system.
Despite its frontier status, galactic law is more present here than in other parts of the sector. Rin hosts the Hegemony's sector administration and, for tactical reasons, is home to the Malklaith Governor’s seat on Warren. Its most significant installation is SB-176, the regional headquarters of the powerful Guild of Engineers.
Rin's wealth of natural resources, many of which (like Baftoma) have already been extensively plundered, attracts powerful pirate and Syndicate factions. These groups constantly prey on the valuable goods and money flowing towards the Hegemony's Core, making Rin a dangerous, yet lucrative, crossroads for those operating outside the law.
Notable Places in Rin
Aleph
Between the poisonous gases and tectonic instability, Aleph would be a planet to avoid if it weren’t for its mineral stores. Most of the wealth dug from the planet is taxed heavily by the Governor, leading to frequent unrest with the miners.
The Straylight
The latest fad, the Straylight is an upscale club and cocktail bar where elites can wine and dine. It usually orbits Aleph, though it can move to other planets and moons in the system. Its owner, Chance, runs a tight establishment, but things can sometimes get out of hand.
Warren
Warren is one of the moons of Aleph and the home to an ecumenopolis—a city spanning the entire surface of the moon. It’s the capitol for the system, and the system Governor Ritam al'Malklaith makes his residence here. On Warren, you can find anything you need—for a price. Its high-rises are full of legitimate business dealings, and its streets far less so.
The Ashtari Cloud
An ancient damaged remnant of a massive Ur ship lies in space, generating an in-system nebula. Within it, normal propulsion is minimal and nav systems dodgy. The Maelstrom pirates figured out how to navigate the cloud, and made their base of operations within its protective shroud.
The Cove
The Maelstrom pirates have cobbled together a drifting stronghold from derelict freighters, cargo pods, and stolen scrap, known as the Cove. It slips through the Ashtari Cloud, its location ever-changing. With enough grit or the right contacts, a determined seeker might track it down—though only trusted allies are gifted storm drives to navigate the cloud safely.
Baftoma
"The Husk"
Resource exploitation by the Hegemony is comprehensive, and planets incapable of sustaining life are stripped to the core. Baftoma was once such a planet—now only scaffolding of rock remains, its broken form only used by folks hiding or dodging pursuit.
SB-176
You don’t need a planet in order to mine. Or at least, you don’t need ground. This combination “mining” platform and space colony is responsible for extracting resources from Vet, the gas planet below. The mining rigs in the skies below—mostly manned by Urbots—send their goods to this central hub. Most of those are packaged and fired towards the Rin-Ecliptis gate.
Geography
Rin is host to several inhabited planetary bodies and cosmic phenomena, including an in-system nebula and a shattered planet trailing asteroids as it orbits the sun. As the first system colonized by the Hegemony, records and maps of this system are the most comprehensive and complete.
