The Empire of Sereneaux, also known as Imperial Sereneaux, the Sereneaux Empire, or the Sea of Sails is a thalassocratic empire which originates and dominates Southern Azora, on the Seren Peninsula. It is bordered by Kingdom of Adraus and the Lorausii Confederation by land, and neighbors the League of Seven Cities across the Kadian Sea.
The Empire of Sereneaux is one of the oldest existing nations in Azora, originating as far back as the first century as a colony of the Kadian Empire. For much of its history, the southern half of the Peninsula was ruled by a series of Kadian governors and officials who instituted strict laws and punishments. It is most notable in the eastern portions of the Peninsula where, when translated, many locations are named in honor of bloody battles or massacres between the Kadian soldiers and early tribespeople.
By the modern day, Sereneaux has grown in wealth and strength. Its ships were the first to truly explore beyond Azora, crossing the vast oceans and discovering the rest of the world. Its trades and exports flow through many markets across the subcontinent of Azora. However, in its elegance, it has grown stagnant. While it still remains one of the largest trade empires, Sereneaux ships struggle to modernized against Empire of Alwyn whose navy has developed dreadnoughts and steel steam ships which overpower the ironclad semi-sailing navy of Sereneaux. Furthermore, its ruler, once a dominating force in Azoran politics, has grown weary and arbitary in his ways over the last century, only causing the increasing stagnations the country suffers,
Religion
Sereneaux, for much of its history, has been a staunch ally of the Lucian Faith. Its connections to the Theocracy of Mesegña are so deep, many sometimes refer to Sereneaux as Holy Sereneaux due to the power priests hold within government.
This state was not always so, during the early formation of the faith, the kings of Sereneaux and councils of Mesegña would start bloody and terrible wars - as Sereneaux would often claims to be the rightful continuation of the Old Kadian Empire. These wars would eventually culminate in the War of Five Nations in 726 PE, where the Lucian Faith allowed the Order of the Seal of Saint Imogen to return to the faith to help defend Mesegña from total destruction. It was the end of this war that many of the nations would bend the knee to Mesegña and commit to their forces, now known as Arbiters, to hold office in nations loyal to the faith.
