Kingdom of Meria
Kingdom of Meria (also known as simply Meria) is a flourishing and quickly evolving kingdom in the western waters of the Merian Sea. Meria is known for having a predominantly Merfolk population, (estimated to be up to 90% Merfolk). Forecasted by political analysts to be the next big superpower owing to it's recent heel-turn from strict religious guidance towards a cultural philosophy of self-service and community action.
Structure
Kingdom of Meria is principally ruled by the King, following a patriarchal lineage passed down from ruler to the next male born heir, with few but exceptions given to place a female heir or alternative named heir, usually decided by the king or next of kin.
Serving the king is the Royal Court, this is a selected cabinet of trusted individuals who are designated with entrusted rights within a certain department or domain. Royal Court members are usually selected from Noble Families that have held their duty for years, and while a ruler has full jurisdiction and can choose to appoint anybody regardless of status or lineage to any seat within their court, it is an unspoken rule that it will be the same families to the same positions.
Culture
Merian culture historically has been strictly tied to the Church of Saint Mercius as the Merian's believed that the diety was the cause of the ruthless rip-tides and torrential winter instability. Early Merian culture was focused around appeasing the diety and attempting to quell his ire so that their living spaces would be saved. Many rituals and appeasement rites became foundational traditions passed down in families such as the Beaconing of Summer tides, a ritual made to attempt to appease the god and bring calmer tides.
Recently however there has been a cultural shift nationally towards support of the Sereneties movement and championing community progress over deity-appeasing, uplifting industry and striving for change. Alongside the ideas of industrial and scientific excellency, there has been a strong movement of rethinking and reconsidering cultural holidays and re-contextualising their meanings to better suit a rejuvenated Meria.
Unity within Tides.
The Kingdom of Meria holds many sacred gems within it's hallowed hands, one of which, the main interest is the bustling industrial city of Mercia.
