Hope Hospital
Purpose / Function
Hope Hospital stands as the beating heart of Camp Hope. It was founded with two driving goals: to restore the medical care and knowledge that had been nearly erased during The Fall, and to pursue the Cure to Sonohoka Syndrome, the disease that forever altered humanity. To this day, it remains both a sanctuary for the sick and a bastion of research, where physicians, scholars, and seekers of knowledge labor tirelessly to preserve life and rebuild the science of healing.
Alterations
The first floor of Hope Hospital has been fully renovated and reclaimed. Here you find the functioning heart of Camp Hope: patient wards, operating rooms, classrooms, labs and offices for The Doctors. Clean halls are lit by scavenged electric fixtures, lined with fresh paint and patched walls, standing in stark contrast to the world outside. It is a place of sterility and order—a deliberate rebuke to the chaos of The Fall.
When renovations began in 13 SE, the settlers carried out a grim but necessary task:
- Bodies were removed and given burial, or burned when necessary.
- Scavenged equipment and materials were stripped from every floor, feeding the survival of the early settlement.
- Zombies that had infested the building were hunted and destroyed, the halls echoing with gunfire and screams.
Once the ground floor was secured, the settlers turned their efforts to fortification and function. But the hospital is vast—far larger than Camp Hope’s population or resources could support. Thus, the upper floors were sealed off and left to decay.
The Abandoned Floors
The untouched levels above are a world apart from the bustling first floor:
- Peeling paint, rotting furniture, and collapsed ceilings dominate the landscape.
- Dark stairwells and elevator shafts plunge into silence, smelling of mildew, dust, and faint traces of death.
- Old medical records and ruined equipment lie scattered, mingling with graffiti and bloodstains left from the Fall.
- Some rooms remain haunted by rumors of strange shapes and sounds—automatons that never stopped their patrol, laboratories sealed off mid-experiment, or other strange things never found.
Though scavenged once during the reclamation, the hospital is too massive for every corner to have been truly catalogued. Secrets still linger in the abandoned wings—records that might reveal truths about Sonohoka Syndrome, caches of pre-Fall technology, or darker remnants best left undiscovered.
History
The hospital building predates the Fall. Once known as Albany Medical Center, it had been a center of treatment and research in the Time Before. When civilization collapsed, it was abandoned, left to ruin and scavengers for an unknown span of years.
In 13 SE, a group of survivors made their way to the site with a bold vision: to restore the hospital and revive the medical tradition that had been shattered. Through scavenging, improvisation, and sheer determination, they reclaimed the structure, sealing it against decay and adapting its design to the harsher realities of the new age. From that point onward, it became known as Hope Hospital—a symbol of survival, continuity, and the search for the Cure.
Tourism
Hope Hospital is not a site for tourism. Its purpose is functional, not decorative. However, it draws outsiders from distant camps who seek treatment for injuries and illnesses that cannot be handled elsewhere. It also serves as a trading hub for rare medical supplies and copied medical texts, both of which are valued beyond measure across the wasteland.
Access is strictly regulated. The main hospital is closed to anyone who does not live within Camp Hope. For outsiders, there is a Medical Clinic, a separate but attached wing, open to all visitors. Those who arrive at the gates often find themselves in long queues for entry, security, and evaluation, with the promise of healing drawing them forward despite the wait.
Game Hooks
- Urban Ruin Crawl: Parties may be asked to explore the abandoned levels to recover lost medical equipment or search for a missing patient who wandered upstairs.
- Lore Hunt: A hidden archive of pre-Fall research lies in a sealed lab on the 7th floor, guarded by malfunctioning security drones.
- Haunting: Survivors whisper of voices in the upper floors, calling by name—whether hallucination, ghost, or something else.
- Infiltration: Enemies of Camp Hope may attempt to sneak in through the upper floors, bypassing the guarded skywalk entrances.
