Stone Tortoise
Often called the "Common Tortoise" Stone Tortoise are found in many rocky and mountanous regions around Cinder's Hope.
Basic Information
Anatomy
These creatures bear shells often encrusted with large stones. While these stones are often quartz or sedimentary, they have been known to have rarer gemstones grow upon their backs. Domesticated Stone Tortoise may also have their shells polished and even sculpted by their owners with no damage or discomfort to the tortoise. While the mechanism of stone growth is still being understood, it is presumed that the high internal temperatures and diet of the Stone Tortoise have much to do with these results.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Rock Tortoises reqire a steady diet of plant and rock material, however they prefer igneous and metamorphic varieties. Rock Tortoises tend to convene around geologic activity such as fissures, magma flows, and volcanoes.
Behaviour
Common Tortoises often exist in groups or "Huddles" of up to 20 members. This makes them oddly social in terms of turtles and even sometimes click their hardened jaws in a form of simple communication. Their communal nature makes them loyal pets and are favored among blacksmiths and while some doubt the emotional capabilities of a common tortoise there have been stories of Magma Tortoise looking after the families of former owners decendents.
