Drarrol Isle

Drarrol Isle is a rugged island to the southernmost reaches of Dinemire. The island is mostly self-sustainable and has very little trade with the mainland. Because of the lack of trade, generally hostile weather, and the sulfurous smell that seems to coat the island, not many people visit the island, shrouding it in a veil of mystery.   From a distance, the isle appears as a dark, brooding silhouette against the endless and merciless sea. It's jagged cliffs, blackened beaches, and the large steep dormant volcano, that is the centerpiece of the island, tells a tale of ancient power and hidden dangers.   While most who live on the island will not agree that the island is particularly mysterious, they will agree that it is not the most hospitable of places, and all that visit or move here are suggested to stay within one of the island's four settlements:
  • Bosta: The largest town of the island, Bosta lies between the coast and the dormant volcano, on top of which the Keep of Bosta stands, the home of the Laird of the Island. Bosta the hub for trade, governance, and security of the island.
  • Skorstad: Perched on the southernmost lip of the island, Skorstad is carved into treachorous clidds that drop sharply into the sea below. Most of the island's warriors and hunters reside here as the cliffs provide perfect hunting grounds for massive seabirds.
  • Elahlid: The westernmost town of the island, nestled in a flat valley between two towering cliffs. The town is essential for the island as it is the main source of fishing.
  • Hurgargen: Past the only true forest on the island, Hugargen is a small industrious town known for it's mining of dark iron ore with a superior durability and resistance to heat.

Geography

The Geography of Drarrol Isle is a mix between black sand beaches, windy plateaus raised far above the ocean, and steep towering cliffs, making it a harsh and unyielding environment to the unprepared.   The eastern most part of the island, is the on average tallest area of the island. Rising gradually from the outskirts of Bosta all the way to the steep drop of the cliff end the peninsula, the large plateau is known for high winds and low foliage. The entire eastern side of the island is one large cliffside most of which has large jagged rocks in the ocean below.   The central part of the island is mostly dominated by the large dormant shield volcano and the town of Bosta that lies from it's feet and all the way to the ocean, to the south. The area north of the volcano is inhabitable by most people and creatures, as it is a swamp land of near boiling temperatures, and geisers, at the center of which there is an ancient petrified forest.   The western side of the island is part cliffs, forest and beaches. The terrain rises into two smaller plateaus southwest- and northeast of Bosta. The western plateau is one of the few agricultural areas of Drarrol Isle, as it lies in somewhat cover from the otherwise unforgiving winds of the island. The areas are maintained by a few farming collectives. The northeastern plateau is dominated by the only true forest of Drarrol Isle. The forest is ancient, and dominated by old gnarly trees and has a throny and unwelcoming underbush. At the end of the forest is the town of Hurgargen, which lies at the foot of a sudden near vertical rise of the deep grey cliff the plateau lies on, and into which the mines of Hurgargen is.
The two plateaus create a lowland functioning as a passage way leading to the fishing town Ehlahlid. This area is dominated by black sand beaches, and tidal pools in the rugged basalts that lies nearest the cliffs of the plateaus.

Climate

The climate of Drarrol Isle is cold and stormy, with strong gales sweeping across the island. Rain is frequent, but unlike the mainland, snow rarely lingers for long due to the island’s unnatural heat. The volcanic activity provides warmth to the land, keeping it just above freezing even in the heart of winter, though the air is thick with an ever-present scent of sulfur and salt. The volcanic heating combined with the cold and damp weather means that the island and surrounding sea is often covered ina thick fog. One of the few areas that are somewhat sheltered from the wind are the plateau southeast of Bosta.

History

Drarrol Isle, while officially within the governance of the Kingdom of Dinemire, has notoriously functioned as a self-governing state within the Kingdom. Ruled by a Laird like all other Chiefdoms of the Kingdom, its governance remains unremarkable, however diggin deeper into the history of the Lairds, it becomes unusual. Most Chiefdoms have been governed by the same clan for hundreds of years, but due to the competition between clans and dying family lines by a lack of sons, only few have lines further back than 1000 years. Drarrol Isle has never known a time when they weren't ruled by the firstborn sons of the Bosta Clan.
For the thousands of years that Dwarves has existed, the island has been ruled by the Bosta Clan. Once Kings, they bend their knees during the unification, but under the condition that they choose their own governance.   The reign of the Bosta's ended in 3143, when Bathilda Byben and her Redeemed, entered the island and killed the Kerr Bosta. The killing of the Laird broke an until then unknown bond between the people of Drarrol Isle and the Bosta Clan, as they found themselves aware of their knew Lairdess. Within days petitioner arrived to proclaim their fealty to their new leader, and news arrived that the first born son of Kerr Bosta had killed himself, rather than go proclaim his fealty.
