House Farlynn
Tyson van Farlynn was, as his surname describes, part of House Farlynn, an aristocratic family of Genasi. The Farlynn are situated in Waterdeep and enjoy some influences in trade and politics, having some ties within the Lords Alliance higher ups. They have strong ties with the Merchants Guild as well, in- and exporting huge amounts of ressources.
Resulting from their higher status, they developed a typical aristocratic viewpoint, thinking themselves over the commonfolk and expecting their children to be the great ones to carry their legacy.
Childhood
Tyson, son of James and Maryja van Farlynn, was born and raised in Waterdeep, one of the biggest neutral tradecities on the Holy Empire. Maryja was the then 2nd in line to inherit the Family Leader Title. Ahead of her was her younger sister Annabet van Farlynn, coupled with her husband Eduard. Both Tysons mother and her sister were eager to show their competence to inherit the leading title.
Complete List of Conditions for the title can be found at the sidebar
As Maryja and Annabet both had only one condition left to claim the title, they were restless to complete it. The condition just so happened to be to raise their own child and put them into a position where they would benefit the family greatly. So Tyson and his cousin Darian were always put against each other. From day one, there was no friendly playtime between the two. Tyson was taught to treat his cousin as a rival rather than a friend. While Annabet taught her son Darian the ways of politics, aiming to land him a seat in the outer council as the youngest to ever do it, Tyson was taken into a completely different line fo work, the trade.
Way Of The Trade
From the age of four, Tyson started building sandcastles, wooden playtowers and built his own toys. He was constantly pushed to be great, and quietly obliged. There was never a stressfree day, which consisted of hours upon hours of crafting, trade education and logistics work. Right up to the age of seventeen, he endured the 14 hours of cramming every day, together with his cousin Darian.
Defying Expectations
What his and Darians parents did not know, was that from the age of fourteen, the two cousins were meeting in secret, plotting. The current head of the family, Farna van Farlynn only had her two daughters and a son, which was not permitted to inherit the title. So Tyson and Darian were determined to run away the day before Darians 18th birthday, the day where Annabet was planning to introduce Darian to the outer council. They agreed, the pressure was not the way they wanted to live. They both loved their own field of expertise, but they wanted to live with their professions the way they wanted, free of what their parents wanted.
Continuing, putting on the fassade of rivals in public, they endured. So on the designated day, both sisters were agitated as always, since Darian was set to join the council in 4-6 days, and Tyson was to be promoted to Subbranch Manager of the Waterdeep Export-Logistics Department the next 3-5 days. Festivities were already in place, a huge feast in the family's halls was already in the preparational end stages, hundreds of gold pieces were invested into the crowning of the new family head. And on this day, the day before Darians brithday, they both fled.
Escape
They ran through the city, hooded, obfuscated, as fast as they could. They designated a place where they already had rations, spare gold and basic equipment, naturally without any family crests. They wanted to start a new life, going their separate ways, but together in escaping the expectations of their family. They found themselves in a small shed on the borderlands of Waterdeep, eating and concretizising their plans.
Darian already had connections to the higher-ups at the City Watch and Strategists of several Mercenary and War Guilds. He was fascinated with the politics and logistics around the legal and war systems and wanted to become a strategist within those professions. Tyson on the other hand was fortunate enough to have met several dwarven craftsfolk during some of his expeditions outside the city. He and a specific group of dwarves, branching from the "Gondria Craftsmen" kept in touch, breaking him out of the city not even hours after not initial runaway.
Tyson had impressed some of the dwarves during his expeditions with his woodworking skills, showing signs of not only fine sculpuring work, but also of the arcane. One dwarf in particular who would become his master and mentor, named Ragadinn Ironcloak advocated for Tyson to join their ranks and teach him their ways, customs and traditions.
'Tis a waste of talent! 'Avin 'em on some silly lil leader seat'd be a crime. A say he come join us 'n I'll personally teach 'em. Yer say what he c'do at jus' six'een— Ragadinn Ironcloak
Departure and Learning the Dwarven Way
Farewell cousin, let's stay in touch. Well, I'd say before we next meet eachother you will hear my name far and wide, as "Waterdeeps Archstrategian" anyways. We'll come to meet eventually, just under new names, with new faces and new friends. Let us go now.— Last words of Darian van Farlynn under his aristocratic name
After their last conversation, they departed in different directions, leaving their family to put up missing posters all around the kingdom and not knowing who to give on the head title. The feast and festivities were cancelled and the family was in distress for months.
Tyson was helped by the Inner Disciples of the Gondria Craftsmen to escort him to their main location, situated in the mountains of the three dwarven warlords. There, he was sat down by Ragadinn Ironcloak, explaining that he personally will oversee the training of Tyson, showing him the basics of lots of different tools. Tyson was ecstatic, being able to work as a crafter on the things he wanted, with a mentor that respected him for him, and not to gain orestige himself.
Working as a Gondria Craftsman
After the first few months, Tysons week was packed:
Twice a week he met with his master to learn more techniques in the vast array of tools and discuss his further specializations. Four of the remaining five days were spent practicing different tools by completing orders the clan received, including wooden chairs or tables, simple potions, pickaxes or shovels and more. The last day of the week was without any designated work.
Despite the packed schedule, it was miles easier and rewarding than whatever he was forced to do under his mothers orders. He slowly became comfortable around the dwarves, earning nicknames, such as Charcoal, Charred One, or Redling. He did not mind, because the banter of the dwarves was what drove him to them in the first place. He did not want to have anything to do with his royal heritage any longer. He wanted to live among the dwarves as one of them, a crafter aspiring to create something wonderous. So after about a year of living there, he took the most used nickname he was called as his new surname, Redling, as the only fire genasi around the dwarves.
Specialization and Emerald Enclave
After the first year, Tyson was put before the decision of specialization. The sad truth of not being able to be the best at everything was made clear. He was to choose two tools in which he wanted to further his knowledge and be truly great in. He chose Woodworking and Alchemy, a perfect mix between the mundane and the arcane.
Coming with that specialization came the first real long-term job outside the clan.
Bein' closed off from the real world 'll only delay yer progress. Erry one a us someday needa' branch out 'n see what waits fer us 'side them stoney peaks and green forests,— Ragadinn Ironcloak
Tyson secured a job within the Emerald Enclave, impressing Melanor Fellbranch, the current Contact of the Enclaves Waterdeep locations. As application, he made Melanor a custom round-table, made out of ironwood, filled with resin, around a miniature sculpture of the Enclaves Main Estate inside the table. He personally wanted to be the one overseeing this project, so she made arrangements to send Tyson directly to his workplace. And so, with the age of 26, the fire genasi, who grew a traditional dwarven beard and hair went on his way to become an apprentice Arcane Craftsman, under Melanor Fellbranch in the tradecity Waterdeep.
