By the seventh year of the new age, the world had changed. Magic was outlawed, freedom watched, and whispers punished. Damian had already died once — and that had made him cautious. For his daughter’s sake, he shed his old name, his old face, and built himself anew.
A place that glimmered with gilded corruption, he appeared under the guise of Thalian Vaerem, a minor nobleman with fine manners and finer paperwork. His Kitsune self, “Damian Flow,” and his daughter, “Suuna Flow,” were listed among his possessions — slaves of foreign birth, purchased legally through falsified records. The deception was cruel but necessary. To survive in a world that feared their kind, they would play its game.
On a narrow street just off the Silver Court, beneath hanging lanterns and velvet awnings, Thalian opened his new establishment:
Fire & Desire.
Outwardly, it was a luxury boutique — perfumes, oils, soaps, fine silks, and handcrafted “intimate” curiosities. A scandalous shop that made proper nobles avert their eyes. But that was the point.
For every scented candle or massage oil, there was a hidden twin — bottles laced with dormant enchantments, incense that soothed magical exhaustion, soaps that revealed invisible runes under moonlight. The sensuality of the surface masked the danger of what lay beneath.
And his neighbours? The most infamous of all — The Gilded Swan, a high-end brothel run by Viessa Rorona, a moon elf of noble blood and sharp grace.
Their meeting was inevitable. She arrived one evening in a red gown and gold-trimmed gloves, her moon-mark faintly glowing as she regarded the strange new merchant beside her.
“You’ve chosen quite the street for your business, Lord Thalian,” she said, her tone smooth as wine.
“I go where desire and secrets thrive,” he replied with a grin.
Viessa was far from fooled. She saw the cleverness in his disguise, the careful distance in his eyes. Yet she didn’t expose him — she found him fascinating.
Over time, the two became unlikely allies. Damian’s incense masked the faint magical aura of her brothel, shielding Viessa’s cult from inquisitors. In turn, Viessa’s influence ensured his shop remained untouched by city inspections. Their relationship, pragmatic at first, softened into camaraderie — mutual respect forged in shared danger.
Suuna, meanwhile, kept to the shop’s backroom, crafting small trinkets and decanting oils. She knew better than to wander. When customers entered, she vanished upstairs, her foxlike features hidden beneath a hood. Viessa’s staff adored her, often sneaking her sweets and gossip when no one was looking.
Through this partnership, Damian built a quiet empire — a hub where forbidden things could move unseen. Between the laughter of courtesans and the scent of jasmine smoke, magic flowed once more through the city’s veins.
And when night fell, Damian would sometimes stand on the brothel’s balcony beside Viessa, watching the lamps flicker across the streets.
“You play a dangerous game,” she would whisper.
“Only when I win,” he’d answer, smiling into the dark.
Fire & Desire prospered. But more importantly, it survived — a flame hidden behind silk and perfume, waiting for the right wind to rise again.here...
