286 BTFOM – 242 BTFOM: The Song Beneath the Sand
Dawn Parthnara was Damian’s first true love — a silver-scaled dragonborn bard whose laughter softened even the harshest desert wind. He met her in a coastal tavern, where the scent of salt and smoke hung thick and her voice rose above the noise like morning light breaking through storm clouds.
She was twenty-seven then, vibrant and fearless, and when she sang, the room forgot the sea’s cruelty. Damian had wandered for years since the fall of Respite, and though he’d bartered with nobles and thieves alike, it was her song that finally made him feel human again.
They travelled together for decades, trading tales and music for food and shelter. She would perform under the stars while he conjured illusions of glowing dunes and flickering fireflies to dance around her. Where she went, joy followed — and Damian, eternal as he was, began to believe that maybe life’s worth lay not in how long it lasted, but in who shared it.
He often set aside his contraband work and rebellious dealings just to hear her sing. Her melodies reminded him that there was still beauty worth protecting.
But time has no mercy for mortals.
Her scales lost their shine; her hands began to shake. The voice that once carried through taverns became a soft hum only he could hear. And Damian, unchanging and untouched by age, could only hold her hand and pretend he didn’t see the difference.
When she passed at seventy-one, the world itself seemed to fall silent. The wind stilled; even the sea paused. Damian buried her in the dunes overlooking the coast, her lute marking the spot, a candle flame beside it that would never go out.
He whispered:
“You showed me what it meant to live. I’ll spend eternity making sure others get the same chance.”
From that night onward, he never sang in public again.
Flarereen watched all of this from afar — unseen flame in the wind. For the first time since her release, she envied a mortal. Watching Damian grieve stirred something ancient in her: a longing to feel what he felt, to live as he did.
