308 BTFOM – The Fall of Respite
For twenty-five years, Damian Flow kept Respite alive — the same oasis his parents once guarded, now a sanctuary for wanderers and traders across the desert. He gave freely of food, water, and shelter, believing that kindness was its own kind of magic. And for a time, the desert seemed to agree.
Until the Drow of the Underdeep rose from beneath the sands.
They claimed the oasis waters belonged to them — that Damian had stolen the veins of their sacred rivers. He refused their demand for tribute, and under moonlight they struck, sending poisoned winds across the dunes. Their spell turned the water black, their fire tore through the palms, and Respite — his home — began to crumble.
Damian used every trick he knew: illusions to hide his people, small flames to light their escape. He saved lives that night, but when the sun rose, the oasis was dying.
He fell to his knees beside the poisoned pool, his reflection rippling with failure — until Flarereen appeared. Her voice rolled like thunder through the smoke.
“You gave mercy when the world gave none. Let me give it in return.”
And for the first time, she bent her will to mortal ruin.
The ground trembled. The poisoned waters boiled away. From the ash, new springs burst forth, clean and golden. The palm trees sprouted anew — leaves like flame, roots like glass. Respite lived again.
But magic always carries a price.
Her fire had burned too brightly, reshaping the land and marking it forever as a place of genie power. The Drow’s curse twisted upon itself — and now, any who carried Damian’s blood or flame could never again walk there.
Flarereen’s eyes dimmed as she told him.
“You are its guardian, but never again its guest. The land remembers you — too well.”
Damian looked upon the oasis one last time, its waters shimmering with faint red light. He smiled through the ache.
“Then let it remember me kindly.”
He left Respite reborn — his home saved, but forever lost to him. In later years, travelers would call it The Fireheart Oasis, where the water glows at dusk and the wind hums like a lullaby.
