Cosmoplankton
Forming the foundation of every space ecosystem is cosmoplankton. This collection of microscopic organisms are incredibly hardy, capable of surviving sub-zero temperatures and a near absence of nutrients.
In the depths of space, cosmoplankton is almost always the only available food source. The most common method of feeding is filtration, creatures of gigantic proportions designed to take in tonnes upon tonnes of cosmoplankton.
The umberelli is one such creature that feeds on cosmoplankton. Native to the Cheem System, its own microscopic nymphs make up this type of plankton.
Umberelli use gigantic nets to catch large amounts of cosmoplankton. This net grows as the creature ages, some stretching to over fifty metres in width.
The makeup of cosmoplankton is highly regional. Certain bacteria, protists, microscopic larva and spores may only be found around certain planets or solar systems. The Greater Oasis is known for its high spore count, with diseases like spacespores more common in these areas.

Very neat.
Thanks! :D
