Cosmology

Vreathe is the name of the world at the base of Meliheal, the World Tree. This tree was planted in the beginning of days, an uncountable number of eons in the past. Meliheal also serves as a wellspring of souls, both in new souls born on Vreathe, and old souls that return after death.

Vreathe was a perfect but shapeless world created by the Elder God, Alom. With the Elder Goddess Yanneth, they created the eternal wellspring, a source of never ending life. Another Elder God, Tarcur, planted the World Seed in the center and from that the world tree grew. The Elder Goddess Nora soon joined them in shepherding the growth of the tree, adding the concepts of order and time.

Other worlds also connect to Vreathe through Meliheal. Depending on the myth, the worlds were either created from the growth of the tree or were connected naturally over time. In Iron Age human mythology, all of these worlds are presented as flat disks that are literally connected by the roots and branches of the tree, which is how it is represented in the image to the right. Previous civilizations such as the Olimians, and their descendants have a different interpretation, that all the worlds are round and bound by physical law, their connection through Meliheal is instead with portals in space, which was proven true in recent years...

The Elder Gods

In the beginning of days, as told in the The Primeval Gods of Vreathe, there were many Elder Gods, not just the four we know of on Vreathe. In those days, they were known as the Rena. Then the supreme being, Silnos presented them with a world seed. The Rena didn't know what to do with them at first, so Silnos took it back and turned it into the first world tree. He then burned it away when he was done. The remains of this tree became the Ashes and Embers of Creation, and became the stars and nebula in the sky. These ashes and embers were evenly distributed and were ordered. He then presented each Rena with a new world seed.

Alom, Yanneth, Nora, and Tarcur all came together in those oldest of days, forming the Tetrad, and combining their world seeds together to create Meliheal. Other Rena followed their lead and soon the universe was filled with World Trees. Then Silnos told them the truth, that the worlds they created weren't meant for them, but what came after, the first humans. Tarcur, the mightiest of the Rena, became angry and started to spread the concept that humans were a 'Disease', causing the War in Heaven that scarred the universe, sending everything out of order. Many World Trees were destroyed and many Rena were imprisoned or fled to the edges of the universe.

After the war and the Rena were scattered, there was only the Tetrad and their children that played any part in the history of Vreathe. Through the history of Vreathe, many of the Tetrad and their children the younger gods were imprisoned or exiled from the World of Vreathe. The only one left is Saint Nora. Her religion, the Church of Saint Nora, if the main religion on the World of Vreathe, and her teachings have influenced many events for thousands of years.

The symbols in the center of this tracking enchantment each represent one of the Tetrad. Despite being gone from the World of Vreathe, it is still possible to channel very small amounts of their power...

The World

"Oh yeah, Vreathe is definitely a flat world! You'll sail straight off the edge in a massive waterfall to the hells below! All these globes and maps the Elves have, totally fake! They only make them to mess with humans!"
(...why are Iron age people so dumb?)

For most of Vreathe's history, people believed the world was flat. The disk-like appearance of many older maps is due to the maximum reach of the light of the Tower of Heaven, sometimes called the Great Lantern or Lantern of Heaven. This structure was built during the Golden Age, to light the world when the sun itself went out. The Gold Race went into the void themselves and gathered dying embers from the first tree. They put these embers in a lantern and placed it at the top of the tower. During the Gold Age, the Tower of Heaven lit every corner of Vreathe in a calm, warm light that pierces all but stone and casts no shadows. In current times, the magic of the lantern is diminished. It is barely visible only at night. The sun outshines it during the day.

The lands and sea beyond the reach of the Lantern was known as the Dark Lands. So few people return from the far reaches of the world that very little is known about these locations. Because of this, map makers don't even bother drawing these areas on the map, instead drawing an outline representing the limits of the world and the knowledge of the humans of Vreathe.

If you were to approach a descendant of the Silver Race such as an Elf or Centaur, they would present you with an immaculately detailed globe or map projection, showing lands and nations that humans just don't normally comprehend otherwise. They have been making global maps for many thousands of years while humans have only started to do it recently.
This Elven Globe shows the world with very accurate elevation measurements. With this globe, you can see the continents of Shalinar and Tenson, with the lands of Vreathe in the lower right.

A full stylized elevation map of the world. The world is vast, with many lands that might be mentioned in passing, but will never be explored or fully described here. There are cultures and languages beyond count across the world of Vreathe, though the focus here will be much smaller...

The Red Circle marked on the map is the extent of the light of the Tower of Heaven, and is also the extent of many maps drawn by Iron Age humans, an example of which can be found further below.

This Canvas Map from the Iron Age shows the world ending in waterfalls. These Self-Updating Maps were magically enchanted to redraw themselves every few years when the master map was updated. They also come with other enchantments.

The self-updating aspect of the maps stopped functioning when the last of Grethan Freula's line died out in 2980 I.A.. It is still an accurate map of Vreathe and none of the map's other functions were lost yet.

Nations and their people will be well described, but even this map covers an area much larger than the focus here.

Major Nations

Cassel

Depending on where you are in the history of the Iron Age, Cassel is either one large nation, or an alliance split into as many as five smaller kingdoms: three human kingdoms and two elf kingdoms. The nation absorbed many other smaller nations and kingdoms through its long history. Culturally, things can be quite different depending on where in the land you are.

"Cassel is a kingdom with a million problems. Vampires roam parts of the land, and Dragon corruption spreads in others. Ancient bloodlines are constantly at war with the royal family trying to gain total control... I could go on."

"What I don't get is why the people always act so hopeful that I--, that someone, will take the crown and bring stability to the land after years and years of strife and civil war... That will never happen!"
Cassel has been stable kingdom for most of its existence, partially due to the mythical status of its human rulers, who are said to be directly descended from Saint Nora. The other major reason is that the Elves and Humans get along for the most part in these lands compared with the northern kingdoms where humans are second-class citizens. Recently Cassel has undergone a crisis when the King of Verdina was assassinated and the Queen of Baileon vanished, throwing large parts of the nation into disarray. The land is currently sliding into a Civil War with no other solution to things in sight.
A map of the Kingdoms of Cassel. The land area represented here is roughly 800,000 km2, and will be the primary focus here. Though it is a nation and not a continent or world, there are many stories that can be told here. And, we'll still go far beyond Cassel occasionally, even to other worlds!

Irrelith

Kingdom of humans in Central Vreathe. The Capital of this city is Holy Semmitra, a massive city which surrounds the World Tree and has existed since the Golden Age. This kingdom is dynastic and has been around for many tens of thousands of years. In ancient times, they had an empire that stretched from the Frozen North to the Southern Deserts. In current times, their kingdom is greatly diminished.

Teross

A collection of seven elven kingdoms in Northern Vreathe, consisting of Faeon, Terrask, Ordland, Mire, Neldland and Shinea. The Elves of this region call themselves Golden Elves or Sun Elves. Their kingdoms are among the richest and most elegant across the world. I'd be cautious if you attempt to travel there as a human, since they are treated like second class citizens at best, and like pets and objects at worst.

Alluth

Alluth is an area of deserts, mountains, and some tropical forests. Mainly humans live there with some Lamia and other fey scattered around. The Alluthians practice a different religion from other humans and worship the moon. They also worship a living saint, someone with the Moon Trace.

Iruakint

Populated by a variety of fey known as the Inakans. Their lands are mostly barren of plant life but are resource rich. Recently the various tribes of the Inakans united and they declared war on the rest of the world. Most of Western Vreathe has fallen to them over the last thirty years.

Magic

Chryssa

Chryssa
"A lot of people say that casting magic on Vreathe is as easy as breathing! A lot of people also say it has something to do with why we call this world Vreathe to start with... but I wouldn't say that's really correct."

"The act of actually channeling mana is easy! Anyone can do it and get that tingly feeling when they do. Even people who lack a Mana Lung can channel magic with access to the appropriate aethercite crystal. The really hard part is turning that mana into an actual magic spell! Good luck with that!"
Iron Age understanding of magic is limited compared to that of previous ages. It is understood that casting magic involves the usage of of Mana and Aether, two strange energy sources that exists inside every object in the universe.

Mana can be used to conjure and convert energy and matter, but it is mostly bound by the laws of nature. An understanding of how the chemical elements interact with each other and the world around is necessary to cast magic.

Aether is the leftover primordial energy of the Gods that left Vreathe long ago. It can still be evoked by knowing and reciting the true nature of the old gods, or by finding it locked deep beneath the ground in magic crystals. Aether ignores every aspect of the natural world and can be used to cast terrifyingly powerful spells.

People

Throughout the history of Vreathe, four races of humans were said to have walked out of Meliheal. They were the races of Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Iron. Races such as the Elves, Centaurs, Fairies, Trolls, and many others are all actually also humans on Vreathe, the story of how they became these creatures and how some were twisted being recognition is told in the The Silver Age Cataclysm.

Some of these races have a single unified ethnicity with a single language and belief system. Then there are the Iron Race and descendents of Silver. They have almost too many languages to count. The Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Iron Races all look similar to each other, with small differences in color and shape. The many descendants of the Silver Race come in many different shapes and sizes.

There are other beings on Vreathe created by the Gods. The elder god Tarcur created the Dragon Lords to compete with the humans. The Dragon Lords in turn created their own races of aetheric dragons. Drakes, Kobolds, and other creatures are descended from them.

There are also the Giants, spawn of the god Altus. Back in the beginning of days, Altus was exiled by the other gods to the wastes of the North. Altus made it his purpose to destroy Vreathe. He created the giants to help him with this task.

Each of the Gods at one point in time created their own race of beings, either in mockery of the humans or to help them with their task. Many of them are extinct, and many more are so small in number they are barely worth mentioning.

There are far too many unique beings of Vreathe to properly describe in the small space here. The guide below is by no means complete but has many different races of Vreathe listed and described:

History

The history of Vreathe is dominated by the elder god Tarcur manipulating and deceiving gods and men alike in his attempts to destroy Meliheal, the World Tree. After the War in Heaven that imprisoned and scattered most of the elder gods, there was only the Tetrad left. Alom, Yanneth, and Nora continued to tend to Meliheal and they were protectors of the Golden Ones. Tarcur then tried attacking Vreathe to destroy the Golden Ones, but was beaten back when half of his fourteen dragon lords betrayed him and joined the other gods. Tarcur went into hiding for the rest of the Golden Age, building up his forces until he could challenge the others, but he could never match their power.

When the Silver Race walked out of the tree and the Silver Age started, Tarcur approached them as a friend, teaching them powerful magics. The Silver Race built a technological society and built machines so advanced they could reach the stars. They also became incredibly arrogant, even challenging the gods and sometimes defeating them.

This arrogance later resulted in the Silver Race nearly destroying itself and in a Cataclysm that forever altered their being. He was finally cast out of Vreathe during this Age and imprisoned on the Lesser Moon Nodan. The gods Alom and Yanneth trapping themselves with him to forever watch over his prison. They bodies eventually became part of the moon.

With most of the Elder Gods gone, the Bronze Age was mostly about their children, the Younger Gods, all carving a piece of Vreathe of their own to rule over. They were tyrannical, petty, and cruel, with tens of thousands of years of war governing everything they did. To ensure their rule was never challenged, they used the Orcs and other races to subjugate humans and elves.

Towards the end of the age, the Goddess of the Greater Moon, Kalbeth, gifted a human king a Javelin made of pure mythril. This weapon was so powerful it could kill a divine being. This javelin started a long war between the Gods and Humans. The Bronze Age Ended with a great Ice Age, and the sacrifice of Nora, the last Elder God. She used her power to create a barrier around Vreathe that prevented any god from ever interfering with the world again.

The Iron Age now started. At the beginning of this age, the world was thawing and the newly reborn Saint Nora was guiding humans. Her seven descendants each went to start their own kingdom, and most of the history of this Age is about these kingdoms. Despite being imprisoned, Tarcur has been slowly influencing the world during this time. He has been using his great power to slowly influence the orbit of the Lesser Moon Nodan, causing the small world to plummet towards Vreathe. Something happened roughly twenty years ago that no one though was possible. The outer layer of the world peeled, like an onion, dust and rock being scattered across the sky. As the years press on and the lesser moon approaches closer to Vreathe, more layers are shed and more pieces of the Elder Gods Alom and Yanneth are spread across the sky. As the moon gets closer to breaking completely, the closer we get to Tarcur's prison being broken.

The current conflict in the world involves a large nation of Elven zealots from the west. Someone claiming to be a prophet is taking advantage of a group of elves called the Inakans, of the Iruakint. Their entire land was dried out and frozen during the Ice Age. This prophet approached them with knowledge of magic and technology, turning them into the most advanced civilization on Vreathe. In return, he convinced them to conquer the world and hunt down the remaining members of the Gold Race. The Inakans are now spreading across the world, conquering nation after nation, with very little getting in their way. As they get closer to completing their goal of ending the Golden Ones, Tarcur gets closer to breaking free of his prison. The End of All Things gets closer...

Religion

A significant portion of Iron Age religious writings centers around the achievements and failures of the elder gods and humans. It tells of the many sucesses and failures of the God Tarcur and how his many deceptions caused three previous races of men to fall into destruction.

Aerynn

Aerynn
"As a priestess of the church, I know a lot of prayers. This is one we say every day!"

"O holy Mother, Divine Arbiter of Souls,

You who sees and judges all, hear my prayer.

Guide me through this mortal coil,

Help me heed the cautions and live your virtues,

That I may stand before you unashamed,

when my final day of reckoning comes.

Let it be so."
The Primary faith on Vreath is that of Silism, of the Church of Saint Nora. Most of Vreathe's religion centers around Saint Nora, Former Elder Goddess, and the Supreme Judge. She gave up her immortality to save humans from extinction at the end of the Bronze Age. She then started spreading teachings about the Elder Gods for a thousand years before she died. In death she sits on a throne at the edge of the afterlife inside Meliheal the World Tree, weighing the worth of dead souls that pass through before they are sent to heaven or hell. Very rarely she will send a soul back to Vreath to live once again.

Beware the Silver Race
The Silver Race was responsible for hunting down dragons and gods alike. They assisted Tarcur in ending the Gold Race, and their descendants were at war with the Bronze race throughout the ages. By Divine Law, Elves cannot be kings and they are shut out of the afterlife.
Beware of the power of magic
. While the Iron Race can barely cast magic in comparison to the previous races of humans, it is still incredibly dangerous and was responsible for killing gods and forever altering the Silver Race into their many descendants.
Beware false prophets and promises
Saint Nora is dead. Tarcur is imprisoned on the moon Kalbeth and watched over by Alom and Yanneth. All of the gods are either dead or cast out of Vreathe to never return. Do not trust anyone claiming to be a messiah, a prophet, or a child of any god. Do not believe what they promise. They are lying.

Technology

During the Silver Age, humans were at the peak of their technological development. They were capable of building great ships that could reach the stars and land on other worlds. They have weapons with such power that they could kill the Dragon Lords and challenge the Gods. After the Cataclysm, the Younger Gods decided that technology should be regulated, a job they gave to the Orcs.

The Orcs of Veracrul roamed Vreathe on their massive city sized airships. They would wipe out entire kingdoms for advancing their technology too far. For most of the Bronze Age, society never advanced further than the smelting of iron. After the mythical Javelin brought down their mightiest city and killed their god, the Orcs became scattered and couldn't enforce their law any more. The last few thousand years of the Bronze age was marked by numerous kingdoms rising and falling, advancing and regressing technology at a rapid pace until the ice age froze everything over.

During the Iron Age, the development of technology was slow, though not as slow as one might think. Rediscovery of various Bronze and Silver Age technologies came quickly, and while the Orcs tried for thousands of years to prevent humans and elves from ever advancing too far, they are now at a point where they can be challenged. Elves have redeveloped airships. Humans have figured out various industrial scale technologies. Both have been rapidly developing firearms to finally defeat armor. The use of magic still reigns supreme in parts of the world, and while it is integrated in many different technologies, a point is rapidly approaching where machines will be everywhere making life easier... or harder in the case of war.
