Vreathe's Solar System

Before we dive too far into the World of Vreathe, the rest of the System it calls home is worth mentioning. Surrounding our bright Sun are six planets: Enzia, Yikonis, Vreathe, Rosia, Tarsuros, and Alomis. Around three of these planets are numerous moons with some of the largest being Kalbeth, Aros, and Nethias. Each of these worlds has been touched by the Gods in some way, with some worlds modified far beyond what they originally were. Humans used to live on many of these worlds, but after The Silver Age Cataclysm, we are only found on Vreathe...

Sun

Human Legend says that at the beginning of time, there was no Sun, that the elder gods were so busy tending Meliheal the World Tree that they simply forgot to let there be light. Vreathe was cold and lit only by the distant stars, which are still known as the leftover embers of creation. The first humans, known as the Golden Ones, constructed multiple variations of the Tower of Heaven across Vreathe to light the dark world. The myths say that Vikuon the god of Energy created the Sun after a war between the gods.

Elven Legend tells a slightly different story. The Sun already existed as a leftover ember of creation itself, and the worlds surrounding it were bare and empty. The Tetrad chose the third world orbiting the Sun as the location to plant Meliheal and they spread out across the system filling many worlds with life. Other Elder Gods were jealous of the accomplishments of the Tetrad, so they sent a great dark cloud to obscure the sun and kill everything in the system. The gods themselves then built the Towers of Heaven to light the world while the War in Heaven was fought.

No matter what the story is, the Sun consistently shined on Vreathe throughout all four ages of the world until very recently. When the Lesser Moon Nodan started to break eight years ago, it spread large amounts of dust around the world, which blocked the light of the sun. The previous summer was quite cool which caused some crops to fail in northern kingdoms. Many think that the next year will be even colder and all of Vreathe will be unable to grow food, causing widespread famine.

Enzia

Domain of Altus

Enzia is a small, iron-rich planet. There is no life here and the world is so hot it is said that some metals can melt in the sunlight. Enzia was originally the domain of Altus the God of Mountains, who is currently trapped beneath a colossal ice sheet in the Northern areas of Vreathe.

Somewhere on the world was Altus's Workshop, where he created the Mountain Seeds. When planted and charged with a great amount of Aether, the land will erupt around the seed and form a large mountain. During the The Silver Age Cataclysm, all mountain seeds on Vreathe that Altus planted erupted at once, causing many mountain ranges to spring up that weren't there before. It is unknown is there are any left on this world, or how the modern peoples of Vreathe might exploit them.

Altus was said to have crafted many things in his workshop, and he fashioned materials that are unknown to humans. It is said that the legendary Myhtril Javelin of the Bronze Age was forged here. The Olimians used this workshop during the Silver Age to forge the God-Slayer Blades, swords created from the mixed blood of the four Elder Gods: Alom, Yanneth, Nora, and Tazil.

Yikonis

Domain of Vikuon

Planet Yikonis is the domain of Vikuon the God of Energy. This world is very much like Vreathe in a way. It has oceans and forests, large deserts and grasslands. That is where the similarities end. The air is thick and toxic, the oceans are acidic, and it is so warm that ice has never existed on this world. There is life here, but it is completely different and dangerous to be around. The intelligent beings of this world live off of and generate massive amounts of energy, just like the god that created them. Most of the other life involves some sort of play with powerful acids that would melt a person in seconds.

On this world, within the Holy City of Mul-Amgir, Vikuon sits on his throne. It is said that his power contributes to the Divine Barrier around Vreathe, which prevents all the gods from interfering with that world. In ancient times the world was entirely covered in thick clouds, making it impossible to see what was on the surface, but through the Iron Age the clouds have cleared giving us a glimpse of it all. It is said that Vikuon is using the energy of his world's to power the Divine Barrier.

Most of what is known about Yikonis comes from ancient writings by the Olimians, who explored, conquered, and attempted terraform the world. The conditions there proved to be too much for the Silver Age people to handle, causing them to abandon the project before it really even started.

Vreathe

Where the Base of Meliheal rests

Here on vreathe, Meliheal the World Tree rises hundreds of miles above the world and casts a pale shadow over large parts of the land. The shadow isn't very noticeable (just emphasized here for effect). Sunlight can pierce through the upper layers of Meliheal's branches as if it didn't actually exist. For many, Vreathe is either the literal or metaphoric center of the universe. For others, it is not really a unique place and it is said that there are countless other worlds out there that are exactly like it.

Vreathe is the world where all humans and the vast majority of elves are known to live. The world is more or less perfect for their survival, though tens of thousands of years of influence from gods and dragon lords still affect them. An example of godly influence still dictating the lives of mortals is Nivema's Sorrow, a massive ice sheet that sits in the ocean at middle latitudes and is the coldest place in the world. Just a hundred miles to the west of this massive ice sheet is the Olimian Wastes, a vast desert that is the hottest place in the world. This wasteland was created by the Silver Age Cataclysm, and shows just how destructive humans can be.

These two features aside, there are many dozens of different biomes across the world, each with its own assortment of life and different human or elven culture. One could spend a lifetime of traveling the world and never have a chance of seeing all of it.

Kalbeth and Nodan

Vreathe has two moons: Kalbeth and Nodan. Both are named after lunar gods. Kalbeth was originally a dead white world, created around the same time Vreathe was to provide a dim but cool light for the world when there was no Sun. Domain over this moon was given to the Goddess of Foresight, who also became the Lunar Goddess. During the Silver Age, the Olimians wanted to convert the world into one they could live on and it became the first world they terraformed.

Kalbeth is cooler than Vreathe and the air is much thinner. A network of Obsidian Towers with crystal cores originally ran constantly, converting materials from deep under the lunar surface into water and air. Near the end of the Silver Age, the Olimians took these crystals for another purpose and they were never replaced. As a result, the atmosphere on Kalbeth has been gradually thinning over the many thousands of years since. The planet is still habitable, barely.

Lunar Elves make their home here, though it is unknown how many are left. Several thousand of them built an Ark and landed in the deserts of Central Vreathe halfway through the Bronze Age, fleeing a war. They mixed with the much larger human populations there and their descendants are the Alluthian peoples. As for Kalbeth, there is no way for Iron Age humans to communicate with the moon to see if there is anyone left living there...

Nodan.png
Nodan is a white lifeless world that has recently started to shed off layers and glow red. This moon was created to imprison the Dark God Tazil and was made from the bodies of two Elder Gods: Alom and Yanneth. Tazil wanted to destroy Miliheal the World Tree, and the rest of the tetrad opposed him. Nora was the last of the elder gods remaining after Nodan was created.

It was believed that the prison would float above Vreathe for all time, but throughout the Bronze and Iron Ages, the moon approached closer and closer to Vreathe. Once it got too close, the titanic force of Vreathe's gravity started to rip Nodan apart. As the moon sheds off its outer layers, it is only a matter of time until Tazil is free, with many saying that the world was going to be doomed ten years after the moon started breaking.

Rosia

Domain of Flora

This cold desert world was given to Flora the Goddess of Growth back in the beginning. Flora could have made this a lovely world filled with life, but instead she was busy on Vreathe, constantly fashioning new flowers and other plants. She created many pretty things, but her world was left neglected. It was actually the Olimians that started the efforts on Rosia, wanting to make the world a third habitable place after Vreathe and Kalbeth. They succeeded and for a brief period of time, Rosia was a green world.

Unfortunately, the The Silver Age Cataclysm, caused by the exploding crystal tower on Vreathe, reached Planet Rosia. The Silver Age Humans that lived there were transformed beyond recognition into the Ironmen and the Grassfolk who were so different from each other that they spent all of the Bronze Age at war with each other. They mined the world bare of its resources and killed most plants and animals that were brought there.

When Flora was banished from Vreathe at the end of the Bronze Age, as all gods were, she went to her domain. She wiped out 'all' remaining life on the world and started over, but her creative spark was gone. She sits on a rusty red throne in a large stone palace that was neglected for tens of thousands of years, admiring Vreathe from a distance but doing very little else. From telescopes on Vreathe, it is clear that life does still persist in a way as parts of Rosia are still green, barely.

Tarsuros

Domain of Tazil

Tarsuros is the largest world in the system and believed by many to be the largest planet in the universe. It was claimed by Tazil after Meliheal was planted and Vreathe was created. The most notable aspect of the world are its three large moons and The large red storm on the world.

The storm is more than twice as larger as Vreathe is and is known as The Great Eye of Tarcur. Within this eye is the Elder Prison and the Flying Palace of Tazil. The Elder Prison is a cold dark place that is nearly infinitely dense. Many gods were sent here after the War in Heaven. They forever float suspended in the dark, unable to move and unable to use their power. The tearing winds of the storm above is too much for most beings to bear, making it impossible to enter or escape the prison. It is said that many of the Golden Ones were also thrown into the darkness, where they could either float for an eternity, or give up on this existence and move on. This was usually Tazil's last resort when he couldn't break a Golden One with another method.

Tarsuros has many dozens of small moons, but there are three large moons that are all quite different from each other. There is Izi, a volcanic world where the Fire Elves live. Then there is Lazulia, a waterworld beneath the ice where the Sengar live. Last there is Aros, a dark shadowy world where the Goddess Lithane and her armies of vampires reside. There exists portals on Vreathe that can take people to Izi and Lazulia. Originally, there was a portal to Aros as well, but that was destroyed long ago.

Tarsuros's Major Moons

Name

Description

Izi

Izi is a sulfurous volcanic world constantly being pulled apart by the forces of Tarsuros's gravity. The volcanoes here are larger than anywhere else in the Solar System, yet somehow life can find a way here. Underground there exists an aethercite known as Stable Stone that keeps the land calm, and it is also oddly cool and wet in many places. Above Ground there are endless fields of sulfur snow and giant obsidian towers similar to the ones on Kalbeth, but instead of terraforming the world, these towers were used as pleasure palaces where Silver Age humans lived in decadence and splendor until the Cataclysm brought it to an end.

Lazulia

Lazulia is a world covered entirely by a large cracked sheet of ice kilometers thick. On this Ice are various ruined towers like other moons, though many have sunken into the ice or turned over due to how unstable the surface of the world is. Under this ice is a water world unlike anything found on Vreathe or elsewhere, with life living at every conceivable depth and pressure. There also exists large caverns underground that are like vast dry sandy deserts. These deserts are so isolated that people living there are unaware that they are surrounded by water and ice.

???

Nenaria

Once the largest and most massive moon of Tarsuros. During the War in Heaven, several rival elder gods took the world and slammed it into Tarsuros, hoping to destroy both worlds. Instead, Nenaria sank beneath the clouds and disappeared where it got crushed and absorbed into Tarsuros.

Aros

This dark shadowy world is the domain of Lithane the Mother of Vampires. The world is covered in a thick fog where shadowy creatures live. These creatures seemingly ignore physical laws and can appear in an instant to tear apart other living things. Silver Age humans attempted to settle this world much like other moons and planets, but quickly abandoned it because of the threats here. On the North Pole of the world is a large palace that rises over a hundred kilometers above the surface. Originally it belonged to Nora, but now Lithane resides there, scheming on how to get back to Vreathe and prepare the world for her master's return.

Alomis

Domain of Alom

Alom is the leader of the Tetrad and the King of the Elder Gods. He could have claimed Tarsuros as his own but instead he took dominion over a smaller world surrounded by rings. These rings could be said to be a reflection of Alom's order and dominion over space. For as much as if known about Tarsuros, very little is known about Alomis. Alom only resided near the world for a very short period of time before moving to Vreathe to live in the Holy City of Semmitra.

This planet has dozens of small moons orbiting it, including several that guide the rings around the world, keeping them in perfect shape forever. There is also a singular large moon Anniya, thought to be the domain of Alom's consort Yanneth. Unlike the moons of Tarsuros, no portals exist that can take someone to Anniya. Silver Age records indicate the world is bitterly cold and flammable, and that life also somehow lives here as well. What would would be the dominion of the Elder Goddess of Life if there was no life?

Scientists on Vreathe has calculated that orbital fluctuations on planets Alomis and Tarsuros prove there could be multiple worlds beyond influencing them, but none have been observed yet. Silver Age records indicate that there are two large icy worlds somewhere out there, but it could be decades or centuries before Iron Age technology can see them and these worlds are officially discovered.

Nethias

Domain of Yanneth

Nethias is the largest moon of Alomis and is the largest moon in the Solar System. The entire world is covered in an orange-blue haze. The few Silver Age writings about the world describe it as Yanneth's Proving Grounds, where the Elder Goddess of Life tested the forms of various new creatures. The creatures that were deemed a success were sent to Vreathe and many other worlds connected to the World Tree. The failures were often destroyed with little thought put into them after. While the rest of the Tetrad took residence in the Holy City of Semmitra, Yanneth would often go back to Nethias to fashion new forms of life, far from the issues plaguing Vreathe at any given time in history.

Before Yanneth imprisoned herself with Alom and Tazil and created Nodan, she created a variety of formless creatures to defend her world. The Olimians tried landing on the world many different times to uncover Yanneth's secrets, only to be forced away by the horrors here. It is said that only a Golden One can walk on Yanneth's world unimpeded, but there are very few of them remaining. There also isn't any known portals to Nethias on Vreathe

Author's Notes

A few notes about Science and stuff. Despite being a fantasy world, I still thought about this stuff...
  • If Nodan (a Ceres sized moon) orbited Vreathe (my stand-in for Earth) close enough to be broken apart by the world's Roche Limit, that there would be way worse problems to deal with than an awakening Elder God....
  • There would be ridiculously large tides. We're talking tides of 100+ meters near the equator and still 20+ meters at European-like latitudes where the Kingdom of Cassel is at. There would also be vastly increased volcanic and earthquake activity.
  • Luckily, Nodan is mostly hollow, and is about 1/10th the mass of Ceres. This still causes some pretty dramatically large tides.
  • Nodan as a moon is visually about 30 times larger than Kalbeth (my stand-in for the Moon) in the night sky (about 5 times wider).
  • Also, as Nodan breaks apart, all those chunks of rock and dust falling into Vreathe's atmosphere would make it quite warm at first, then block out sunlight, causing the equivalent to a volcanic winter. Impacts would create widespread destruction and and possibly cause a mass extinction event!
