Lagrast
Lagrast is known for being a nation full of art and creativity, but also a country that is very serious about its religious beliefs, which are entirely ingrained into the legal system. It is a land with a rich history, much of which is still undiscovered and shrouded in mystery.
History
The discovery of the Dreamers was the single most important contribution to Lagrast's history. Without that, the nation would never have even existed, and the power of dreams would never have been rediscovered. The nation of Lagrast has known a lot of conflict as well. When the region belonged to the Empire of Man, it was a battleground for The War of the Coast. Lagrast also fought long and hard for its independence from the Maritime Principalities, finally gaining full independence in 533 PEM.
Foreign Relations
Lagrast tends to look upon other nations as its children, who need to be saved from the horrible nightmares that infest the world. They view most people outside of Lagrast as blissfully unaware of the evils that surround them, viewing beings like fiends as only a small piece of a greater evil.
The one exception to this is Tharkenwod, a nation which Lagrast tends to have a very hostile opinion of. They regard the machines made by the engineers there as a kind of nightmare, an evil that seems to lessen the power of dreams, as citizens of that country have less dreams and more nightmares. Whether this occurs as a result of the disaster that occurred in the region or as a result of technology is hotly debated by politicians and scholars alike. Lagrast's belief in the evils of high technology has also led them to hate the Artificials, believing they were made from nightmare spirits or dream spirits that were taken advantage of.
Laws
Several days of each week are reserved for rest and contemplation. Oftentimes this period of rest is accompanied by artistic creations and new inventions from the nation's citizens. In this period of rest, manual labor is not allowed under any circumstances.
Anyone found colluding with nightmares or their servants is taken immediately to the dungeons, where they are interrogated in their dreams to try to learn what they can. Then, depending on the severity of the crime and the behavior of the individual, they are either imprisoned or exiled. If they are imprisoned, it is usually accompanied by the presence of dreamseers who try to save the individual from the influence of nightmares. For many, this imprisonment is nearly inescapable. When someone is exiled it is because they are deemed beyond saving, not feeling any remorse for their actions. In fact, most crimes are seen as caused by the influence of nightmares, so such decisions are made about nearly all major crimes.
Minor crimes are usually understood to be an individual choice rather than from the influence of nightmares, so the punishment is adjusted to fit the crime. Judgments are carried out by dreamseers.
