Maritime Principalities

The Maritime Principalities are located in the southwestern islands of the continent, thriving off of mercantile trade and commerce. They employ many sailors, mercenaries, craftsmen, and sometimes pirates to get what they need.   The Islands of the Maritime Principalities are very luxurious, as many of the goods they export are expensive and luxurious themselves. Wine is one of the most popular, but the Mercantile Principalities have many other such exports. The Mercantile Principalities are also very popular as tourist hotspots since many of the islands are tropical and have beaches, resorts, and other expensive luxuries. If there was a place for someone to go and relax for a week, it would be here. There is plenty to see and do and the crime rates are somewhat low (if you go to the right places).   The Maritime Principalities are broken up into many different principalities, each one owned by a different Maritime Prince. Each manages their section differently and they all believe in their rights to the throne of the empire. They also believe, though, that the easiest and least violent way to reunite the empire is through trade and economic tactics. The Princes jump at any chance to buy new land or a new city. There are quite a few humans within the Principalities and many princes are human themselves. They compete for land and resources among themselves but are far more united than they appear.

History

After the fall of the Vimali Empire and the destruction of its cities, the Empire of Man found itself needing to expand into the Sayali Archipelago to both watch over the area to ensure the Vimali did not return and to create more space for their own populations to live. Imperial explorers also discovered various luxury resources abundant within the islands previously rendered inaccessible. Offering land and various economic benefits to anyone willing to settle the area, the Empire quickly established several early colonies. Two of these evolved into what are now Sera Vimali and Sera Liberale. While many of the colonies dissipated before long, the surviving ones became prosperous under the new economic leaders of the area, who were among the first to claim lands and established vineyards and other industries to produce luxury goods.
As the Empire began to break apart with the spread of Ohn's Bane, the Emperor became desperate for money. He started selling off land to the Maritime Princes in exchange for exorbitant amounts of money in order to fund a possible cure under the assumption that the lands could simply be reclaimed later. Because of the Empire's complete decline, the Principalities ended up owning most of the world's land. The amount of territory they own significantly decreased after The Threefold War, leaving them with primarily sea territory. In a continual war against the Republic of Humanity, they continue to lose the last of their continental territory.
