B10 The Bridgewalk Tavern

The Bridgewalk Tavern in Verbobonc

The Bridgewalk Tavern clings to the side of the Velverdyva bridge like a barnacle with a bar tab—its terraces and balconies thrust out over the water, offering one of the best views in the city. It is the first proper drink many see when marching into Verbobonc from the south, and the last warm light when they depart.

The place is famous for:

  • A melting pot clientele of caravaners, river captains, fishermen, and visiting merchants.
  • A packed, noisy common room where long tables groan under jugs of ale and the buzz of half a hundred tales.
  • Its neutral status as a kind of unspoken safe ground between Vigil Wardens, Billets, and the Battirovka thieves—thanks largely to Rorik’s diplomacy and Lilac’s charm.

Prices run high, but travelers pay gladly for the view, the company, and the feeling that for one evening at least, the road’s dangers are held at bay.

Location & Structure

Perched directly along the pedestrian span of the Velverdyva River Bridge, the Bridgewalk Tavern is built from heavy timber and hardwood logs, its upper stories jutting out above the river like a cluster of ship cabins grafted onto the stonework.

  • Terraces and balconies overhang the water, fenced with carved railings where patrons lean to watch ships pass below.
  • Stained-glass windows glow with warm colors at night, and stout metal doors guard the main entrance from bridge traffic.
  • Inside, the walls are plastered with signed trinkets and memorabilia from customers—daggers, river pennants, strange coins, and scrawled notes of gratitude or challenge.

During festivals, especially in summer, the tavern becomes the beating heart of celebration on the bridge: flowers and paper offerings thrown from its balconies to drift down the Velverdyva in a blaze of color.

Arriving at the Bridgewalk
Bridgewalk Road narrows as it climbs onto the great stone span, the air sharpening with river breeze and tar. Halfway across, a jumble of timber and balconies clings to the bridge’s flank: lanterns swinging, stained glass glowing, laughter and song spilling out over the water.

A carved signboard creaks gently—The Bridgewalk Tavern—above a metal-bound door already scuffed by a thousand boots. From the open shutters above, someone calls for another round, and you catch a glimpse of long tables, foaming mugs, and a purple-haired serving girl weaving through the crush like a darting swallow.

Interior Layout

Common Room (The Long Hall)

Bridgewalk Tavern Menu by 3orcs
  • Low-beamed ceiling, heavy posts, and long plank tables arranged perpendicular to riverside windows.
  • A central hearth near the landward wall; in warm months, shutters are thrown wide and river wind replaces smoke.
  • The walls near the bar are layered with signed items from travelers: shields, hats, scraps of parchment, even broken oars—all with names, dates, and snatches of memory.

Here you’ll almost always find Rorik Crowle behind the bar or leaning on it, leather apron on, eyes scanning the room as he pours.

Riverside Terraces

Timber decks jut out over the water, with small round tables, hanging lanterns, and a waist-high rail.

  • Ideal for quiet talks away from the din, or for watching ships slip under the bridge.
  • During festivals, musicians and dancers spill out here, and patrons join in throwing flowers, folded paper wishes, or tiny carved boats onto the current below.

Upper Gallery & Small Rooms

A wooden stair leads to a gallery overlooking the common room and a short row of small private rooms for:

  • Off-duty Wardens, Billets, and favored merchants staying the night.
  • Discreet meetings where guilds, thieves, and priests can talk without blades drawn—Lilac often carries drinks to these doors, and hears more than most.

Factions & Neutral Ground

Rorik has carefully cultivated the Bridgewalk as neutral territory:

  • Vigil Wardens frequent the place after duty; Rorik coordinates with them to keep trouble from spilling into the streets.
  • Billets of St. Cuthbert respect the tavern, sometimes using back tables for quiet talks; Rorik supports their cause with donations and a firm “no brawling” policy.
  • The Battirovka Family thieves’ guild treat the Bridgewalk as off-limits for jobs, understanding Rorik’s insistence that all factions leave their feuds at the door. Lilac, whose brother is tangled in the guild, walks a careful line with them, using smiles and sharp wits to keep peace.

So long as no one makes the tavern itself a battleground, enemies can drink within sight of one another here—watched by Rorik’s sharp hazel eyes.

The Bridgewalk Experience

  • Unforgettable Evenings: From the moment you step through its metal doorway, The Bridgewalk Tavern promises an evening filled with laughter, music, and the company of good friends.
  • The Heart of Celebration: Whether it's watching ships sail by from a terrace in summer or joining in the festive throwing of flowers and paper boxes into the river, the tavern is a place where memories are made.

Adventure Hooks

  • Shadows on the Bridge: Someone is violating the Battirovka understanding and picking pockets inside the Bridgewalk. Rorik quietly asks the PCs to find the culprit before Wardens or Billets crack down and the tavern loses its neutral status.
  • Brother in Too Deep: Lilac confides that Corin is being pushed into a dangerous job involving a visiting merchant or a shipment tied to the Temple of Elemental Evil. She begs the PCs to help untangle him without igniting war between the Battirovka and the Wardens.
  • Festival Over the Water: During a major river festival, the Bridgewalk is packed to bursting and the balconies laden with offerings to be thrown into the Velverdyva. Amid the crush, a high-value item or person disappears. Did they fall? Jump? Or get spirited away on a river-boat below?
  • Rumors in Every Mug: Rorik has heard troubling reports from river captains—bandit flags, strange barges sailing at night, or Cuthbertine patrols gone missing near Nulb. He offers free rooms and introductions if the PCs will follow up on the stories and bring back the truth.

Food, Drink & Prices

The Bridgewalk’s beer and wine list is extensive, with casks from local brewers, Kron Hills ales, and imports from Dyvers and farther.

  • Drinks: Standard prices are roughly 50–100% above normal; special vintages and festival brews can reach 2–3×.
  • Food: Limited but good—stews, fresh fish from the Velverdyva, crusty bread, and a few house specialties. Quality over variety.

Because of the location and demand, this tavern is a “premium experience”—the party can feel the hit to their coin purses, but the atmosphere makes up for it.
