Ryūzaki Sanosuke enters the world, eyes already ablaze with potential.
A true and accurate account of the exploits and challenges of the Silver General, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, in his service of the Hashinara Clan.
Now accustomed to his new powers, Hashinara Katamoto gathers those who are still loyal to him. These include Ryūzaki Sanosuke, a capable general who served his daughter, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, a humble but beautiful farm boy with a silver tongue, and Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, dark scion to the clan responsible for his resurrection.
Hashinara Katamoto and his new generals meet with legendary bandit group Goemon's Virtuous Thieves. Through revelry, they convince Raizō and his bandits to join in on an attack on Wakigami Castle to free Katamoto's assets from their new rulers.
After a heated battle with the Yasutane Clan, who occupied the fortress in his absence, Hashinara Katamoto and his generals reestablish control over Wakigami Castle and, by extension, Yamato Province.
After a failed attempt to defeat the Hashinara Clan at Wakigami Castle, Yasutane Enmonzaemon is slain when his head is removed by Ryūzaki Sanosuke.
A massive, invisible skeleton suddenly attacks Tōdai-ji after the battle between Tōdaisen Nobuhara and Yokokazu Ume. Although driven off by Katsusada Shishauezaemon and allies, this event presages military movements by the Chōsokabe Clan who inhabit Shikkoku to the west.
A horde of undead creatures, led by a general of the Chōsokabe Clan attack the Canal District of Wakigami. With the support of Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his trusted generals, they are driven back with few civilian casualties and their leader captured.
In response to the invasion of the Chōsokabe Clan, key generals Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke are deployed to Kii to investigate the situation.
While scouting the northern border of Kii, Ryūzaki Sanosuke encounters Tsuchimi Takasuke and his cavalry forces. In response to Katsusada Shishauezaemon's missive, the Tsuchimi Daimyō is preparing for an assault on the invading Chōsokabe Clan.
Hashinara generals Ryūzaki Sanosuke and Ishikawa Gōemon reinforce Tsuchimi Takasuke's attack on the Chōsokabe Clan at Wakayama, driving the Forsaken back.
During the attack on Wakayama, Ryūzaki Sanosuke first encounters Musashibō Benkei, a humble wandering monk armed to the teeth and fighting off waves of Forsaken by herself.
During the battle for Wakayama, Ryūzaki Sanosuke subdues and captures a powerful Forsaken called by its fellows as Takamimusubi. The creature is later put into Katsusada Shishauezaemon's care.
While in Kii, Ryūzaki Sanosuke and Katusada Shishauezaemon hear rumors that an Oni(race) is attacking travelers in the province.
Investigating rumors of Oni attacks, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and Ryūzaki Sanosuke both begin traveling to Kongobu-ji in eastern Kii. Having just returned to Wakigami, Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Matsumoto Ooawagaeri are both ordered to make for the temple as well.
The four major generals of the Hashinara complete their journey and reunite for the first time since the attack on Kii began.
Upon arrival at Kongobu-ji, the generals of the Hashinara discover that the resident priests have all been slain by unknown individuals. Though there were rumors of an Oni here, these wounds seem to have been inflicted by weapons.
While investigating the slaughter at Kongobu-ji, the generals of the Hashinara encounter a monstrous Oni just south of the temple. They engage in battle against it, but Katsusada Shishauezaemon's magic freezes the creature in place and then dominates its mind, turning it into an ally.
After dealing with Baby Huey, the generals of the Hashinara encounter the true perpetrators behind the slaughter of priests at Kongobu-ji: a pair of Kyonshi named Amenotokotachi and Umashiashikabihikoji. The Hashinara forces engage them in battle and slay both without allied casualties. Both corpses are put into Katsusada Shishauezaemon's care.
Guided by Tsukuda Katsuo, the four major generals of the Hashinara Clan travel to Iga to meet with Fujibayashi Nagato.
Upon arriving at Iga, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his most trusted generals (plus Baby Huey) are led to a secluded tea house and meet with Fujibayashi Nagato of the Iga Ninja. Before the meeting can proceed, however, the group is attacked by two Igamono, Crocodile and Stoplight. When the two are near defeat, the leader of the Igamono, Vengeance joins the fray. After a desperate battle in which Baby Huey is slain, all three enemy ninja are defeated and Vengeance captured.
Upon returning to Kongobu-ji with the intent of inspecting new priests instated to take control of the shrine, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his generals instead find that the onmyōji have been killed and raised as zombies. A short battle ensues, in which the offending undead are slaughtered and the area cleaned. No further attempt to colonize this accursed shrine would be undertaken for quite some time after.
Key generals Ryūzaki Sanosuke and Aotsuki Tsukamoto are sent as agents of the Hashinara to request an official alliance with Tsuchimi Takasuke, Daimyō of the neighboring Tsuchimi Clan. Convinced by a combination of Aotsuki's silver tongue and Sanosuke's stalwart support during his last military engagement, the old man agrees.
The two Kyonshī captured from a previous skirmish with the Chōsokabe Clan are later revived by Katsusada Shishauezaemon and placed under his control. The first, Amenotokotachi is assigned to serve Ryūzaki Sanosuke, while the second, Umashiashikabihikoji is sent to reinforce Aotsuki Tsukamoto. Meanwhile, Katamoto keeps Kamimusubi, the third of their Kotoamatsukami, as his own servant.
Hashinara forces make landing at Awa Harbor and engage with the Chōsokabe Clan's forces stationed there under the command of Chōsokabe Nobuchika. As the Chōsokabe Forsaken troops are defeated, Nobuchika is captured, and another enemy general, Motoyama Tsugutoshi is released from their apparent supernatural control. During the conflict, Ishikawa Goemon faces off with Momochi Sandayu, her former master, now Forsaken and culprit behind an attempted assassination on Katsusada Shishauezaemon. Goemon suffers a severe wound to the stomach, but Sandayu is slain.
With Oni forces on loan from the Mori Clan, Hashinara forces begin their march north from Awa to Chosokabe Clan-occupied Sanuki. Their objective is to defeat Forsaken forces stationed at Takamatsu Castle and return control of both the fortress and the province to Motoyama Tsugutoshi, Daimyō of the Motoyama Clan.
Hashinara forces led by Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his four most trusted generals march on Takamatsu Castle in Sanuki to engage the occupying Chōsokabe Clan. Upon arrival, they find the battlefield cloaked in a magical mist, and must fight their way through a pack of Nue, supernatural predators which use the fog to deadly advantage. Commanding the enemy forces are Chōsokabe Kanetsugu and Chōsokabe Kunichika. After a difficult battle due to field conditions, the former general is captured and the latter is slain in battle as the Hashinara claim victory.
Under the command of Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his most trusted generals, Hashinara forces march south from Sanuki, through Awa, and into Tōsa Province. They stage in the wastelands there for their final assault on Nankoku and the Chōsokabe Clan.
Hashinara forces led by Katsusada Shishauezaemon attack Nankoku in an attempt to destroy the Chōsokabe Clan and the threat posed by their Forsaken once and for all. They are met by Chōsokabe Motochika, going under her adopted name of Amenominakanushi, a giant Forsaken called Arehate Daidara, and a number of other powerful generals and troops. With a final blow from Baby Huey, the Hashinara slay Motochika and seem as though they will succeed, but the enemy general's death leads to a black hole that threatens to devour the entirety of Tōsa or worse. Only through the timely use of a secret technique passed on to Ishikawa Goemon by her mentor Momochi Sandayu is the disaster averted and victory truly claimed. When the disaster is averted, all Forsaken have vanished and only the Hashinara remain in Nankoku's ruins.
Upon hearing from an Administrative Flunky that Matsutada Tadamatsu, emissary from the Imperial Court has failed to reach a second checkpoint in Wakigami, Katsusada Shishauezaemon gathers his most talented generals as a search party to find the missing diplomat. His actions are hastened by news that Vengeance has escaped from the castle's dungeons. They have not traveled far into the Canal District when they are attacked by a group of Igamono ninja. Shishauezaemon battles alongside Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, Kamimusubi, and Yoshitaka Hitsuie to fight off the would-be assassins, but it is a brutal battle. Partway through the unnamed Administrative Flunky turns on Shishauezaemon and attempts to land a killing blow, but is rebuffed by the timely arrival of Fujibayashi Nagato. With the attacking ninja dead, the Flunky escapes, but Hitsuie is able to follow his tracks to an unlikely destination: The Tsukijō Wakigami Manor.
Following the "Administrative Flunky's" tracks to the Tsukijō Wakigami Manor, the generals find that it has already been taken by Igamono. They enter the building's basement cautiously, and are confronted by a man who looks and sounds exactly like Katsusada Shishauezaemon. When questioned by the real Shishauezaemon, the impostor claims that he already spoke to the envoy from the Imperial Court. Among other misinformation, Matsutada Tadamatsu was told that the Hashinara attacked the Chōsokabe Clan on a personal slight, and that the Ashikaga Shogunate should mind its own business on threat of war. Before the discussion could progress any further, Fujibayashi Nagato attacked the impostor from the shadows and a full battle broke out between Hashinara elite and the lurking Igamono. Among their top priorities was the rescue of Tsukijō no Yumeno, tied to a post in the middle of the cellar, but this too was revealed to be a ninja fake. She was slain with the rest, but in the chaos, a single Igamono managed to cut off the real Katsusada Shishauezaemon's head. With the enigmatic words, "Vengeance has been served," the man accepted his death at the others' hands. As panic spread, Chōsokabe Morichika stole Matsumoto Ooawagaeri out of the chaos. With a few quick words, however, Ryūzaki Sanosuke was able to regain control of the situation, and the Igamono suffered a brutal defeat. After the battle, the real Tsukijō no Yumeno was found in a nearby barrel. She was unharmed, merely tied up, and corroborated the story that the fake Shishauezaemon had told them before.
At the request of Ryūzaki Sanosuke, Aotsuki Tsukamoto dispatches to catch up with Matsutada Tadamatsu before the other can get too far from Wakigami. The diplomat in question is carrying a rude message from a false, Igamono-compromised Katsusada Shishauezaemon, so if he manages to return to Echizen Province as is, the results could be disastrous. Aided by a squad of Iga Ninja, Aotsuki is able to catch up to Tadamatsu. The stuffy governor immediately assumes it's an attack, and calls on his companion Minamoto no Yoshitsune to protect him. That turns out not to be necessary, however, as Aotsuki quickly and eloquently explains the situation. The golden boy's golden tongue does the trick, and Tadamatsu is reluctantly persuaded that the Shishauezaemon he spoke to was indeed an imposter. He goes on to deliver the message that was originally intended for the clan. The Hashinara are held in contempt of the Ashikaga Shogunate, he explains, due to their unsanctioned war against the Chōsokabe. They will be forgiven, however, if they deal with the Ryūzōji Clan: a group of upstarts who have taken over Osaka in Setsu Province and driven the Hosokawa south into Izumi Province. The two make to part ways, but Yoshitsune first takes the opportunity to ask Aotsuki to keep an eye out for a wandering monk by the name of Musashibō Benkei. The two are old companions, she explains, but have been separated for a long time. Aotsuki agrees, and departs with hopes that their next meeting with Tadamatsu will not be so venemous.
After being teleported out of Tsukijō Hanahane's basement, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri finds himself in Masamune's humble smithy. Having just whisked him out of danger, Chōsokabe Morichika is slightly less acerbic than usual, and explains that she's been using this place as a safehouse after the Chōsokabe-Hashinara war. Masamune himself seems fairly content to keep her there, doting and teasing her almost as if she were his own daughter. With some words exchanged about the current state of matters and Yoshitaka Hitsuie's rude health, the three part ways once again. Before he leaves, however, Morichika asks Ooawagaeri to keep her location a secret from the rest of the clan. At the same time, general Ryūzaki Sanosuke is busy meeting with Chōsokabe Kanetsugu with the intention of finding where Morichika might have taken his comrade. She doesn't know, having not been close with the girl, but directs him to ask Chōsokabe Nobuchika instead.
Motivated by the search for Chōsokabe Morichika, Ryūzaki Sanosuke enlists the help of her sister Chōsokabe Nobuchika and searches Wakigami. They come to Masamune's smithy, only to find that the swordsmith is drunk. He is gregarious however, and capable of carrying out a conversation regardless. They learn that Morichika is not there, but Masamune introduces himself as the best swordsmith in all of Japan, and offers to lend his services to the clan. Sanosuke gladly accepts.
While Katsusada Shishauezaemon is away partaking in a dark ritual at Mikumari-jinja, Ryūzaki Sanosuke takes temporary control of the Hashinara Clan until his return.
In order to prepare for their upcoming mission against the Ryūzōji Clan, major generals of the Hashinara are dispatched to neighboring clans to ask for their assistance. Aotsuki Tsukamoto goes north to Yamashiro Province, to meet with the local Harizono Clan and its Daimyō, Harizono Yoshinatsu. Though Aotsuki is as glib as always, Yoshinatsu is notoriously ill-humored, a puppet of the Ashikaga Shogunate. He rebuffs the approach and sends Aotsuki back to Wakigami empty-handed. To the west, in Kawachi Province, Ryūzaki Sanosuke has much better luck in convincing Tsuchimi Takasuke of the Tsuchimi Clan to join their cause. So long as they receive good pay, he offers himself and three squads of mounted samurai to the upcoming battle.
Ryūzaki Sanosuke orders the construction of four major shrines across the Hashinara domain: Sakurai-jinja, a temple to Ame-no-Hiboko in Osaka, Miwa-myōjin, a secret shrine to Izanami-no-Mikoto in Yamato, Kameyama-jinja, a temple to Izanagi-no-Mikoto in Ise, and Tsubaki Okami Yashiro in Iga.
At the same time, he hires through the assistance of his aide Trivia a trio of custodians to oversee three of the shrines: Sumisaki Hisae for Miwa-myōjin, Yoshinami Sujio for Kameyama-jinja, and Hazutani Sengyo for Tsubaki Okami Yashiro. Sakurai-jinja will be headed by the Ryūzōji Clan's own Ryūzōji Masaie.
Construction of the basic shrines will be completed in a single day, but further upgrades are expected for all except Tsubaki Okami Yashiro.
Tiny Kensei Yagyū Jūbei is invited by Ryūzaki Sanosuke to stay at Nijō Castle with her sister, Yagyū Munefuyu. Although Jūbei still harbors ill feelings toward the Hashinara Clan, she has not put together that Nijō and Sanosuke are affiliated with them, and instead hopes to remain there at least until she can speak to Tachibana Muneshige.
Spotting Matsunaga Hisahide and his associates at the Mōri Tournament, Ryūzaki Sanosuke approaches the problem-solver and asks for information about Reinan Naga'aki. Hisahide has what he's looking for, but asks for a favor in return. Specifically, he wants Sanosuke to unseat the current Champion of Susano'o, Hōzōin In'ei, as she has been causing trouble for his associates. Warily, Sanosuke agrees, and with their deal complete, Hisahide leads him to Kusuzaki Zensuke at the nearby Imperial Box, and implies that this is the person he's looking for. Sanosuke arranges a more private meeting to speak with Zensuke at The Tanuki's Glee later.
To follow up on his agreement with Matsunaga Hisahide, Ryūzaki Sanosuke challenges Hōzōin In'ei to a duel. The Guardian of Nara cautions him that should he lose, Sanosuke may lose more than just his life or his pride, but he will not be swayed. Forgoing her suggestion to fight in the Mori Arena, Sanosuke instead invites her to a night on the town with the rest of his companions first.
Ryūzaki Sanosuke spends the evening in Shimonoseki with Hōzōin In'ei, Tanegashima Shigetoki, Byakurei, Kaguya, Takayama Ukon, Takenaka Hanbei, Chōsokabe Kanetsugu, Priska, Ryūzōji Takanobu, Ryūzōji Matashichirō, Ryūzōji Masaie, Ryūzōji Kagetada, and Ryūzōji Ryōka. After paying some special attention to Takanobu and furnishing her with grilled squid, much to Byakurei's confusion, Sanosuke sends the Ryūzōji Clan on their way while he takes the rest of his posse to The Tanuki's Glee for his dinner appointment. Hōzōin In'ei, familiar with the city, offers to guide him, and on the way there they discuss martial arts and the prowess of foreigners. In'ei claims to have battled Petra I a decade ago, and remarks on her peculiar weapon and ferocity, but says that she does not fight much anymore unless pressed to it.
Upon arrival at The Tanuki's Glee, Hōzōin In'ei questions Ryūzaki Sanosuke on whether this is where he intends to have their duel. Sanosuke gives a vague affirmative, but the two are then accosted by the restaurant's proprietress, Kono Mikono. She's all in favor of the two dueling for the evening's dinner entertainment, as her last appointment, a biwa player, canceled at the last minute. Or so she says. Sanosuke agrees, and is promised payment, but confirms that he wants to have dinner first. The rest of his party is taken to another table while he and Ryūzōji Ryōka are led to a corner booth where Kusuzaki Astrid and Kusuzaki Zensuke are awaiting them. Astrid is pleased to dine with Sanosuke, but caught off-guard by the topic of conversation as her father confirms that he is, or was, Reinan Naga'aki. The waitress swings by to offer them another chair for... someone? Once she leaves, confused, Zensuke continues and confides in Sanosuke that he changed his identity to avoid scandal. He had a child with a political prisoner, Astrid's mother, Laura von Langenberg, and by changing some perceptions around, Matsunaga Hisahide was able to help him start his life again without scandal. He disavows any responsibility for what happened to Wakasa in his absence. As this was not turning out to be quite the clue Sanosuke was hoping for, he asks Zensuke if there is anything he knows about the plot to assassinate Hashinara Katamoto some months ago. The scribe doesn't know much on the topic, but muses that it wouldn't be like Ashikaga Yoshiteru to hatch such a plot on his own. Zensuke doesn't know of anyone who might have influenced the decision, but does confer that the erstwhile Swordsman Shogun received high-quality blades from a mysterious benefactor. Astrid confirms that she's seen this merchant, and that he wore black clothing and a white mask, only making his deliveries at night.
As if drawn into a dream against their own volition, in a time and space not quite connected with what they know as reality, the heroes of the Hashinara Clan found themselves in a wasteland. Here, they were pitted against Deathlord☠Troxiom, a monstrous evil general in the midst of a ritual that would make him unstoppable. Alongside them was Date Masamune [Hero]. Queerer still for Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, he found himself to be Masamune, with his body only nominally under his own control and his mouth speaking words he did not intend. Together they battled against Troxiom in an attempt to rescue Katakura Kojūrō [Damsel], but their attacks had little effect on the bone-armored titan at the height of his power. Date Masamune (Hero) summoned his companions to the fight, his weapons glowing bright, but they did not heed his call. It was Ryūzaki Sanosuke's clever idea to write with a conjured pen on the story-scrawling scroll in the background, albeit with little effect. Maxim held the line and traded blows with Troxiom, but could not fell him. Aotsuki Tsukamoto called upon his companion Kagami to pelt their adversary with spheres of light, weak as they were. Still, such setbacks mattered little in the face of Hashinara Yoshitakatomo's incredible magic prowess. With an unseen grasp of mystic power, she* took the story scroll's magic for her* own, and became the effective god of this corner of The Dreamlands. Even by Yoshitakatomo's hand, the battle continued for some time. At the end, Deathlord☠Troxiom lay broken upon the ground. Date Masamune (Hero) was victorious, thanks to his stalwart companions, and Katakura Kojūrō (Damsel) was saved. With the threat gone, the dream dissolved, and our heroes were sent victorious back to the present world. Richer, perhaps, than when they entered, and with the clout of heroism to buoy them through the difficult times ahead. Indeed, it seems that Maxim took something more substantial with him, as the Deathlord's magnificent weapon, the Deathlord Buster, followed him into the waking world.
Investigating reports from Juntoku no Chūkyō regarding a mysterious merchant in Awa Harbor, the five generals of the Hashinara clan quickly found the racketeer in question. Clad from toe to tip in black cloth, with a white mask under his hat, the merchant spoke with a strange, grinding voice and moved with jerky twitches. For all this, he seemed friendly enough, and explained that he was selling poor-quality swords, failures, in bulk. Though these weapons were anything but poor-quality, Fubuki recognized them as being crafted by the same legendary smith notorious for making "Cursed" weapons. Not wanting any more of these blades distributed to the public, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo bought the whole cart, only to have another cart wheel itself out of the house behind the merchant, full to the brim with more blades. With the help of his Sheele, Aotsuki Tsukamoto recognized gears beneath the cart's wheels as the source of its self-locomotion. Karakuri, according to Yoshitakatomo, a kind of trick clockwork popular among the richer classes for entertainment. Meanwhile, Fubuki had transmuted into a tiny fox and stolen into the house. Inside were four more copies of the same merchant. Further inspection showed them to be more wood and gears under their robes than humans. Before Fubuki's investigation could continue, it was interrupted by a shower of bombs with various coy expressions painted on them from the rafters above. First a flashbang, then three smoke grenades that masked the disappearance of the merchants within. By this point, Maxim had burst through the door and was attempting to save the man he saw inside, but with little luck. A few moments and a powerful breath from Sanosuke dispelled the smoke, but the clockwork men were nowhere to be seen. Outside, Kagami pointed out that she'd seen a person on the roof, and Tama found a discharged bomb with a sullen face drawn on it. At the same time, the first merchant had suddenly changed its tune, confirming that yes, Yoshitakatomo actually could meet the smith behind those fine weapons. Fubuki teleported beneath the floor-boards, while Maxim followed by use of a trapdoor Sanosuke had pointed out during an investigation of the interior. Transforming her*self into a hat, Fubuki rested on one of the marching merchant's heads as they progressed through a tunnel until reaching a stone room with more carts of weapons. Also present, watching over them, was a mysterious creature comprising a cloak tapering to blades at the end and a mass of vaguely humanoid red ribbons under a death-marked mask. The Blade Wraith immediately spotted Fubuki even through the disguise and, while she* fought valiantly for a hat, the four "merchants" and creature were able to slay her* in short order. Before falling, Fubuki had sent a message to Yoshitakatomo covering the situation and the princess-daimyō was about to make her* own magical entrance just as Maxim reached the door. Both were too late to save Fubuki, but perhaps she* can still be rescued from true death if they act quickly enough. Standing in their way, though, were the Blade Wraith and four karakuri merchants, now revealed to be hideous clockwork dolls under the guise.
Moments after the death of Fubuki (in hat form), Hashinara Yoshitakatomo teleports the remainder of the party into the shadows of the cavern below. They arrive at the same time as Maxim, who departed first on foot. Although Yoshitakatomo has used a large amount of energy transporting the group, especially Kagami and Tama who are technically artifacts, the group wastes no time in engaging the mottled group of mechanical dolls. Despite its fearsome showing before, the Blade Wraith falls immediately to a single swing from Ryūzaki Sanosuke. While Maxim and Sanosuke engage the remaining mechanical men in combat, Aotsuki Tsukamoto instead attempts to retrieve Fubuki. Aided by the unseen hand of Munechika, he succeeds, and calls upon Amaterasu's light to bring the deceased hat back to life. Though difficult to damage and incredibly deadly, the karakuri men are no match for Sanosuke. Soon, each is reduced to a heap on the ground except for one, whose limbs Yoshitakatomo fuses to its sides to take captive for study. Following up on an unmooring sound called out by Kagami only moments before, the warriors rush through the back of the cave and outside to a small pier. A boat was here, but through the use of karakuri trickery and possibly magic, it has vanished at speed. Even the vessel's trail stops abruptly at a certain point in the water. Whomever was here and leading these creatures, presumably the same individual with the expressive bombs, has made their escape. However, the battle was not without its gains. The Cardinal Generals now find themselves in possession of upwards of six hundred quality, possibly cursed, katana. What's more, Maxim somehow regains his two-handed sword. How could that have gotten here? It will probably remain a mystery. Taking their captive, Yoshitakatomo discovers a final clue engraved into its body. "学天即". Something like "learning from the laws of nature". A maker's mark? Perhaps this, and the now-absent original merchant's promise to deliver swords to Wakigami Castle, may yet lead to the karakuri puppetmaster behind this whole fiasco.
As his dinner with Kusuzaki Zensuke and Kusuzaki Astrid is winding down, Ryūzaki Sanosuke sends out a request to his secretary Trivia. It only takes moments for her to follow up, giving Sanosuke reports of two sightings of a mysterious, white-masked merchant in Shimonoseki, the very town he's currently visiting. Excusing himself, he gathers his willing companions, Ryūzōji Ryouka, Takenaka Hanbei, Takayama Ukon, and Byakurei, and makes to leave the restaurant. He hasn't made it far, however, before Sanosuke is intercepted by Kono Mikono, who is understandably distressed that her customer is leaving both without paying and without providing the evening's entertainment he promised. After dodging the proprietress, Sanosuke and his party regroup outside. Byakurei is sent to search the western parts of Shimonoseki where the merchant was seen last. Meanwhile, the rest of the group head east in the off chance that the lightning beast's search isn't successful. Before making it even a few blocks, however, Sanosuke is hailed by Byakurei, and told that the merchant is meeting with a woman wrapped in metal. Upon arriving at the scene, Sanosuke finds the white-masked merchant unabashedly and aggressively peddling his wares outside a building of Alexandrian architecture. The only thing preventing him access is Blanca Garcés de Navarre, a woman from the Crown of Castille and geared in full, heavy, western armor. Sanosuke attempts to deflect the merchant from her, but the mechanical man is oddly insistent that not only should the weapons be sold to the representatives from Alexandria, but that they be loaded onto their ships and taken back to their homeland. Eventually, with the surprising and timely appearance of Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Sanosuke is able to convince the merchant that the Hashinara will handle movement of his wares onto the Alexandrian ships. Satisfied with this answer for now, the merchant departs, and Yoshitakatomo follows him, cloaked in a spell of undetectability. With those two gone, Sanosuke engages Blanca, Countess of Navarre in discussion about their respective lands. She is amiable enough once it becomes clear that Sanosuke is not seeking an audience with Phaenarete or trying to sell her anything. Indeed, Blanca eagerly falls into the role of teacher at Sanosuke's request, telling him much about the Alexandrian Dominance, Megas Alexandria, and the main forces that make up the Empire. Namely, Blanca's own Crown of Castille, The Enlightened Republic of France with its Twin Queens, Gewehrland with its advanced weaponry, and Mavrovlachia with its bloody devils and universal prisons. Sansouke listens politely, and Ukon seems unhealthily interested in the subject of prisons. Eventually, his group departs and they head back to The Tanuki's Glee. On the way there, the clattering of a cart is heard once again. After consulting with Yoshitakatomo, Sanosuke instructs Shigeaki Fujino to steal the cart of weapons away from the hapless mechanical merchant, then resumes his return to the restaurant.

Following his encounter with the Alexandrian embassy and the mysterious Masked Merchant, Ryūzaki Sanosuke returned to The Tanuki's Glee with his companions Ryūzōji Ryōka, Takenaka Hanbei, Takayama Ukon, and Byakurei. The first of these was already asleep, and Hanbei seemed to also be suffering from the late hour, so Sanosuke made the decision to end this night on the town and return to Nijō Castle.
It was still early in the morning, after returning from Shimonoseki, that Ryūzaki Sanosuke received an unexpected message from Takenaka Hanbei. The waifish strategist, who usually required a full night's sleep, had finally tapped in to the methods of how to use her innate ki as substitute. She was excited about this discovery, but also wanted to discuss a developing plan with Sanosuke. It was high time, she claimed, that the Hashinara reclaimed Tachibana Castle from the Mōri Clan who had occupied it.
On the second day of the Mori Tournament, before matches had officially started, Yagyū Jūbei approached Ryūzaki Sanosuke and asked for a moment of his time. Having spoken to her sister, Yagyū Munefuyu the previous night, Jūbei had handily done away with all her previous misconceptions. Now aware that the Hashinara were not her enemy, nor the enemy of her master, she offered an apology. It was her desire to reunite with Tachibana Muneshige as soon as possible, and so she would be starting on a pilgrimage to The Palace of the Firebird immediately.
Estimated completion of the base construction of Sakurai-jinja, Miwa-myōjin, Kameyama-jinja, and Tsubaki Okami Yashiro, ordered by Ryūzaki Sanosuke.
The second day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament arrived, with festivites starting early in the morning. Special considerations had been made for the Hashinara Clan this time, with their official box expanded enough to seat a multitude of generals. From Mōri Motonari's subtle glance, Ryūzaki Sanosuke gathered that this gesture may have been made largely for him. It made sense, given the sheer number of generals he had brought once again. A fair number of other events occurred simulatenously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 2
No sooner had Fubuki magicked the sword binding Kashirin away than yet another strange event interrupted the ill-fated Mōri tournament. The more keen-eared of those in the crowd noticed it first, and brought it to the attention of their allies. A low, whistling sound was steadily growing in volume as something approached the stadium at high speed. It was not Kashirin's prisonous sword, but rather a black spear shooting down from the heavens directly at Maxim.
Whilst Maxim chatted with "Paseguru Kamui," Aotsuki Tsukamoto and his sheele, Kagami, had noticed something. In the shadow of the Knight Commander's considerable form, a dark presence had just ducked out of sight. Judging from the misfortune that had just then taken place in the arena as well, that could only be the Binbōgami Kashirin. Still wary of the dark spirit, Aotsuki wasted no time in mentally informing Ryūzaki Sanosuke.
Following the final match of the tournament, Ryūzaki Sanosuke departed his enormous retinue and made to delve deeper into the halls of the arena. His way was blocked, however, by a stalwart Onizamurai, and further complicated by the arrival of Maxim with the same intentions. Sanosuke was saved from further exasperation by the arrival of Blanca Garcés de Navarre, who came with a summons from Phaenarete. Having wanted to speak with that sharp leader of the Alexandrian detachment himself, Sanosuke was happy to oblige. At some point on his journey to the Alexandrian box, he picked up a companion by way of Fubuki, but she* was blocked from entering the box itself by Blanca, leaving Sanosuke the only one to enter the audience.
In Setsu Province, villagers, cityfolk, and bakeneko alike have been complaining of strange dreams. The legend of Momotarō plays out before their eyes every night, albeit with a unique spin. In this rendition, "Magical Momo" is an idol, and she defeats the evil oni with her cheerful antics and cute companions. Could this spectacle just be residual thoughts from that idol competition in Wakigami? That wouldn't explain why farmers who have never seen an "idol" in their lives are having the same dreams too. It's been a while since the Gauntlet of Games, where the Date Clan implored their counterparts in the Hashinara to investigate these "dream shards" popping up all over the country. Likely it's in response to the big portal up north near their capital. Regardless, the brave generals of the Hashinara were getting around to it, and their next target was that peach-colored rift halfway between Kaya and Osaka(settlement).
Just as Ryūzaki Sanosuke was wrapping up his audiences in Nijō Castle, he was interrupted by the entrance of a familiar figure. Nanami, a competitor in the Hashinara Martial Arts Tournament, had seen herself in without any announcement. After poking around in an overly-familiar manner, she asked if he had any juice, then simply left. Stunned, Sanosuke realized that Nanami had, without a word, simply moved in and joined the ranks of warriors living in his castle.
As the interim between tournament brackets dragged on, Ryūzaki Sanosuke was hailed by a mental message from his adviser, Trivia. She informed him that, if he was not busy, there were several people in and about Nijō Castle who wished for an audience with him. Five of them, in fact. With mild shock at the size of this number, Sanosuke repaired to a meeting room in his castle and asked Trivia to send them in, one by one.
While the rest of the Hashinara Clan mopped up an otherworldly mess in Shimonoseki, Ryūzaki Sanosuke was otherwise occupied in Wakigami. He had just sent the hapless criminal Karasu on his way after swindling him out of his hellish earnings, but was now confronted by the man's assistant. This pink-haired, bright-eyed girl seemed to recognize him, and didn't so much as entertain the possibility that he wouldn't recognize her right back. Even so, Sanosuke had little idea of who he was talking to, and he didn't often forget a woman's face.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Saitō Dōsan were among the first to arrive in the meeting chamber of Owari Castle that had been set aside for their purposes. Maxim, too, was in attendance, and soon Hashinara Yoshitakatomo arrived with an unknown stranger in her* company. The opposite side of the wide, low table was filled with the Oda Clan’s greatest remaining representatives. Oichi took the head, her position cemented by her relationship to Oda Nobunaga, previous Daimyō of the clan. Beside her stood Shibata Katsuie, her bodyguard and a proponent of this meeting. Then, along the side were Ishida Mitsunari, Azai Nagamasa, and Mori Ranmaru. Only Nagamasa’s presence between the two others seemed to be preventing them from attacking each other right there. Petty complaints and snappish insults were tossed about above the weary-looking Azai Daimyō’s head.
While the invading demon, Raym, lurked beneath the meeting room table, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo took the opportunity to cast a minor spell of healing upon the fallen. This jolted them awake, mending some of their wounds, but Azai Nagamasa was still missing an arm and Ishida Mitsunari a leg, so they were yet in no condition to rejoin the battle. Even Kagami's supernatural powers of detection couldn't pinpoint their attacker's location, save that she was somewhere under the table, so Ryūzaki Sanosuke took the most obvious route forward. Slamming his foot down in a precise, powerful strike, he exerted just enough force to snap all four legs of the table and bring it down heavily onto the floor below. So measured was his strength that those standing on the table barely had to adjust their balance. Even so, the heavy wooden slab didn't seem to meet any resistance on the way down. Either Raym was no longer down there, or her powers of shadow extended further than they knew.
Following the wan figure of Akechi Mitsutoshi, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, and Takenaka Hanbei proceeded down two floors and across one building to the late Takayama Tomoteru's quarters in Owari Castle. The scene inside was a grisly one. Otherwise prim, neat, and clean, the room's center was now dominated by an enormous magical sigil, drawn in dried blood, with Raym's sigil in its center. Tomoteru's body was not present, and Mitsutoshi volunteered that yes, he had seen it removed, and no, he had not seen the old man's soul. That last brought the uncomfortable reminder to Yoshitakatomo that demons sometimes devoured human souls.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto stood in a dimly lit passageway somewhere within Kannonji Castle. That strange, one-horned oni-yōkai girl had brought him here, and locked him within, but thanks to the efforts of Kagami and Tama, he had been able to escape. His allies, Abe no Seimei, Maxim, Ka-ten Agni, and Sugihara Hidemitsu, were all still outside the firmly-shut castle gate. Though he could communicate with them mentally, that left him alone to figure out a way to escape. Hoping to avoid another encounter with Rokkaku no Ateshi, Aotsuki moved first to his right. It was harder to tell after his whirlwind entrance to the place, but if he had to guess, he’d say he was heading east. Late as it was, most of the castle had retired, and none remained in the corridor to challenge him. He tried to muffle the sounds of his clanking equipment, and succeeded about as far as could be hoped for a man carrying such armor and weaponry.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto was running out of questions to ask, and he wasn't much closer to figuring out the mystery behind Shōtei and the mysterious nightly reappearance of Kannonji Castle. There was one thing still bothering him, however: the mochi dish. Aotsuki had heard it mentioned more than once now, and had even seen the shadow of a yōkai carrying it away during his impromptu sojourn into the castle. What significance could it hold?
With the aid of Shigeaki Fujino, a group consisting of Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, and Maxim arrived in Takayama Tomoteru's room at Owari Castle just in time to interrupt a strategic meeting between Takenaka Hanbei and Hashinara Yoshitakatomo. There had been whispers of a great meeting between the Hashinara Clan's top generals for some time now, especially with Maxim's sudden return from Gehenna. Fujino had taken it upon herself to make it happen, and so it was. Abe no Seimei offered some brief telepathic objections at the stealing away of Aotsuki, but he was able to reassure her, and the meeting could begin.
Lord Maxim's initial refusal to go to war on the side of the Takeda surprised Takenaka Hanbei. She voiced as much, suggesting that it was strange he would not want to wage battle against a god, particularly one he had as much to begrudge as Bishamonten. Maxim soon clarified that he would be willing to lend his aid in the coming battle, but it was a risk almost on par with what he had encountered in the Palace of the Firebird. As such, he needed more payment than just honor and good service to make it worth risking his men. In exchange for a large number of souls, quality notwithstanding, he would agree fight both the Uesugi and Izanami.
The summoning of Shax completed, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and her* generals, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Maxim, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke, were all left in the basement of Ōtsu Castle, Abe no Seimei’s sanctum. Their new, demonic guest was now under control, and so they were free to pursue other matters. A few things in particular seemed to be on Sanosuke’s mind, and he began by pursuing the idea of a sheele.
It was just after midnight in the basements of Ōtsu Castle and many a scattered gathering was coming to an end. Knight Commander Maxim, who had just been blessed with a new sheele, thanked Abe no Seimei before returning to the main sanctum. There, he introduced Evaine to Aotsuki Tsukamoto and company as his squire. What followed was a minor spectacle as Kagami wondered secretly why she was so small in comparison to Evaine, Tama, and even Rasaimoku. Aotsuki tried to explain that the reason was in Maxim's own bigness. It was only reasonable that he'd have a big sheele to match. This, however, only led to the little mirror asking Maxim how he managed to grow so large.
It was damp and cold under a gibbous moon when Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, and Aotsuki Tsukamoto were brought by Shigeaki Fujino to the entrance of Isonokami Shrine. This small temple was nearly built into the hillside at the top of a forbidding climb many miles south of Wakigami. A stone arch led within, showing a dilapidated but relatively clear interior, lit by some unknown source. Indeed, it seemed as though someone had been here recently to tidy up. Unbeknownst to them, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri indeed had.
Following the events at Isonokami Shrine, Ryūzaki Sanosuke took his newly-acquired Seven-Branched Sword in hand and returned to Nijō Castle. His journey was hastened by Shigeaki Fujino, and a surprisingly short amount of time had actually passed since he set out from Ōtsu. That was thanks in part, no doubt, to Hakutaku's blessing. A brief, clandestine conversation occupied his attentions momentarily, then the Silver General went about searching for Umbriel. Thanks to the connection with music he and Hashinara Yoshitakatomo had discovered within the Seven-Branched Sword, it seemed likely that the most rhythmically-minded member of the Silver Meteor Storm could help offer some insight.
Following the last match of the day, many lingered in the stands of the Mōri Arena at Shimonoseki. No entertainment was promised, not after the debacle that ensued last time, but it was an opportunity to gossip, socialize, and meet several of the most prominent individuals Japan had to offer. Ryūzaki Sanosuke had his eye on one such individual, and he tore across the stands with lightning speed in order to reach her. By the time he arrived, however, Hikyū was already gone. Her weapon and/or companion(?) Jeff lay empty on the tower where she'd been sitting until moments ago. Fortunately, Sanosuke was not left to wait long. Hikyū reappeared behind him, wondering why he was in such a hurry. By the time he turned, she already had Jeff strapped back on her arm. A few moments of confused conversation ensued in which it was confirmed that Sanosuke did indeed want to talk to Hikyū and not Jeff, as well as that neither of them had anything particularly strange going on at home. Having any kind of rational discussion with this person proved to be challenging once again, but Sanosuke pushed through and eventually drove to the point of his visit.
Now that Shigeaki Fujino had transported herself away to a safe place, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke could battle the remaining Gye-lyong at their leisure. Those monstrous serpents were even now caught up in the coils of Yoshitakatomo's earthen magic, unable to move or raise their heads for the immense gravity pressing down on them. In such circumstances, it might not be necessary to fight at all. Such must have been the thoughts rushing through Sanosuke's head as he grabbed the stone ring that had fallen from the first Imugi's helmet and immediately made his way to the next closest.
After a moment to take in The Tanuki's Secret's curious proprietress, Ryūzaki Sanosuke politely informed her that he and Shigeaki Fujino were here to meet someone. She stared at him for a moment, then another, and finally asked for his name. While Uemura Ayasa referenced that with her ledger, Sanosuke turned to Fujino and quietly asked if they'd even had a reservation here. Apparently they did, because before the other could answer, Ayasa placed them and invited them to enter. The party they were looking for would be through the door on their right, then into the fifth room on the left. Ayasa took a moment longer to caution them not to open on listen in on any other rooms on the way there. At that moment, trusty Fujino received a request from Maxim elsewhere, so she popped out, leaving Sanosuke to brave the indicated door on his own.
Ryūzaki Sanosuke might have picked up an unexpected follower on his way out of The Tanuki's Secret, but he didn't let that interfere with his remaining plans for the morning. First, he casually mentioned something about Umbriel to gauge Bemolle's response. It wasn't promising. Bemolle expressed that Umbriel was horrid company, her constant songs and rhythms unbearable for any amount of time. She didn't like the idea of even being in the same castle as the other Daughter of Avatea, but accepted the situation as an unavoidable sacrifice in her pursuit of coolness. Sanosuke at least agreed to have their living quarters as separated as possible.
Dawn rose on the third day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament, with the matches beginning at their characteristically punctual break of dawn. Mostly familiar faces dotted the crowd, with some missing and a few newcomers present. Of particular interest was a sour-faced, dour woman in reddish robes sharing the box right beside Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki who hadn't been there on days previous. A fair number of other events occurred simultaneously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 3
It was yet fairly early in the morning when those premier generals of the Hashinara Clan arrived at the doors of Yakisoba Yashiki. A heavy rain had begun to fall on their short journey over, clouds blotting out the sun overhead and casting an eerie shadow below. This effect seemed perfect for the dark Western mansion that now loomed before them. While not unheard of in international ports such as Shimonoseki, architecture like this was still very rare in Japan. The pervading feeling of the unnatural, the out of place, was only heightened by the glowing lights behind the mansion's crimson curtains and the infrequent flashes of lightning above. A sign just to the left of the door, obviously added as an afterthought, read: "焼きそば屋敷"
Following the absurd morning he had at Yakisoba Yashiki, Ryūzaki Sanosuke was in need of some entertainment. He gathered a few members of his usual group who were not otherwise occupied and set off for the heart of Shimonoseki in search of levity. So it was that Sanosuke, Byakurei, Ryūzōji Ryōka, Takayama Ukon, Takenaka Hanbei, Tanegashima Shigetoki, came upon a packed mochi stand in the mercantile area that spread out from the town's port. Most of the customers appeared to be standard citizens or tournamentgoers, but among the throng, Sanosuke caught sight of a bobbing hilt. He recognized it immediately as the dreamcrafted greatsword carried by Randi Carter.
With all three pieces of the Imperial Regalia in hand and the blessed light of Amaterasu at his back, Aotsuki Tsukamoto returned to at Enryaku-ji where Hizashi awaited him. The current Herald of the Sun had requested that the other cardinal generals all be present as well. While neither Aotsuki nor the others quite understood why, they all accompanied him to delve once again into that painting which hung on the temple wall.
That rhythmic thump-thump beneath Ryūzaki Sanosuke's feet was certainly a little unnerving. It was as if the Old Ōuchi Manor itself was a living thing with a tremendous heartbeat deep within its core. Spooky as it was, Sanosuke asserted that it was a bit early to assume it was actually a heartbeat. Instead, he and his entourage were here for Randi Carter's personalized tour, so that should be their first priority. After that, perhaps they could figure out what was causing this blasted heat. It was a good bit warmer in here than the brisk autumn day outside, and Byakurei complained as she adjusted her apron. Sanosuke pretended not to notice the motion, instead turning attention back to his guest. Unsurprisingly, Randi wanted to see the building's attached chapel. She'd spotted it from the outside on their way up the cliffside and, as a student of Henry Holiday, had quite an interest in seeing the stained glass up close. The chapel wasn't Sanosuke's favorite place. He'd gone through a few things there that he'd rather not remember. Even so, Randi was the boss. Ever-helpful, Takenaka Hanbei was able to create a rough magical map of the place using her magic. Following her directions, Sanosuke led the way left through the east-facing hall and into the chapel.
In the center of his own audience chamber at the Old Ōuchi Manor, Ōuchi Yoshitaka sat with a sake dish raised to his lips and an expression of polite amusement on his fair features. To Ryūzaki Sanosuke, Randi Carter, Takenaka Hanbei, and the rest of the group, the effect was quite eerie. Yoshitaka didn't move a muscle, not to acknowledge their presence, to finish his drink, or even to breathe. Hanbei suggested that his presence here was shocking, but at least explained Yoshitaka's unexplained disappearance that came with Mōri Motonari's seizing of the province. At Sanosuke's request, she felt out the room for any supernatural cause.
With a bit of free time at his disposal, Ryūzaki Sanosuke found himself reminded of a certain scheme Takenaka Hanbei had dreamed up. Her goal was to conquer Tachibana Castle, taking it back from the Mōri Clan forces which had occupied it in retaliation for Sanosuke's own annexing of Inaba Province. When she'd suggested using Dream Magic to make occupier Kumagai Nobunao believe he'd lost the castle over a friendly arm-wrestling match, the Silver General was a bit doubtful. Still, he'd made the proper arrangements. It wouldn't do to underestimate the Inabayama Siegebreaker herself, after all. Trivia obtained enough regalia to make the castle look as though it'd belonged to the Hashinara Clan for some time, and a friendly carpenter in Wakigami provided enough wooden tea buckets to get a whole army of Kuma Guys dead-drunk.
Ryūzaki Sanosuke's day had taken him to a variety of places and plots, but this was perhaps the strangest of all. Esteemed psychic and lynchpin of the Hashinara communications network, Shigeaki Fujino, had been apparently added to an entirely new mental network by an unknown individual. A startling lack of experts in the field of mentalism meant that it would be difficult to determine what, if any, negative effects this might have on their beloved network hub. Sanosuke suspected, just as Maxim before him, that it couldn't be anything good. With few options remaining to him, he decided to take the case to the one person who, despite her prickly personality, seemed to know everything.
When Ryūzaki Sanosuke and his dinner companions, Aoki Michiko and Shigeaki Fujino arrived at the door of Yakisoba Yashiki, they found the final member of their party already waiting for them. With her long black hair, slender build, eccentric jewelry, and fine yukata open lazily to reveal smallclothes beneath, this could only be Shigeaki Tōno. Sanosuke seemed to appreciate the view, and not just of Fujino's aunt. Yakisoba Yashiki felt like a different place with the sun shining merrily over green grass below.
Having finished a delightful dinner at Yakisoba Yashiki and hashed out the details of a "newspaper" with Shigeaki Tōno, Silver General Ryūzaki Sanosuke suddenly remembered an appointment he could not afford not to keep at The Tanuki's Glee. He was already in Shimonoseki, which was fortunate because Shigeaki Fujino had business to attend to with transport of the Saika Ikki to Ōtsu Castle. Aoki Michiko agreed to go with him, however, seeming to have only just whet her appetite for drink. Tōno, too, weaseled her way into the party given the understanding that Sanosuke would be paying.
Despite the horrific revelation stretched out before him in the depths of Wakigami Castle, Knight Commander Maxim waited patiently for the team of "mystical experts" to arrive and examine what looked very much like a portal to hell. All the while, the languid, blindfolded youth within the chamber worked away at his anvil, striking red-hot metal methodically, apparently forging by touch alone. Finally, reinforcements were at his back. Maxim felt a chilly presence fill the air as first one, then a trio more red-skulled and black-robed Deep Wraiths glided out from the labyrinth. They were followed by Albionite wizard Mary Lyn, who greeted her countryman with a terse nod. Not to be left out from such a momentous discovery, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo herself* was in attendance last. Although personally far away, beyond the Veil of Sleep, Yoshitakatomo could act through her* Sheele, Hashinara Kiyowara, as though it was her* own body.
Now that Ryūzaki Sanosuke had passed through the portal into Yomi on his own business and Hashinara Kiyowara had returned to her laboratory for other business, that left Maxim more or less alone with Shax. That was an unenviable position to be sure. Mary Lyn, at least, was there, but she clearly had no idea how to deal with their current situation. Worse, the smirking demoness still held a pair of souls dancing in her grip. One of them was Maxim's, but she hadn't been given any orders to return it.
The front yard of The Tanuki's Glee was lit only by torchlight when Ryūzaki Sanosuke once again arrived by his preferred method of transportation. This time the entry was not as empty as it was when he first arrived. In the shadows just at the edge of torchlight, a pair of intimidating figures lurked. One was obviously an oni, although his proportions were more slender than the average for his race. From his battle-scarred armor to the grave expression on his weathered face, he bore the look of a veteran despite his apparent youth. His companion was even more extraordinary. Towering and bulky, with bundles of muscle straining at his pale skin, this "man" looked for all the world as though someone had plopped the entire head of a horse on a great oni's shoulders. A single horn jutted proudly from his equine snout. For all the bestial power his aspect suggested, this stranger's dark eyes did glitter with intelligence and his gear marked him as a Samurai.
The battle was fought, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke had barely emerged the victor. Yet there was something the Silver General didn't quite understand. He voiced his question to his opponent, Hōzōin In'ei: They'd obviously both been giving it their all at the end, but she'd been fighting these duels for a long time. Could it be that she'd given up on being Champion of Susano'o? Still visibly in better condition than Sanosuke, In'ei crossed four of her six arms as she pondered the question. That she didn't immediately contradict him, however, was telling in itself. Eventually, In'ei answered that she could indeed have kept fighting after that last strike. His attack didn't kill her, after all, even if it should have. But the next blow after that might have. Or the next. It had been many years since she'd last been put in such danger, and her feelings at the time were that maybe it would be better for Susano'o to have two powerful champions in the world. That is, rather than just the one left after the other's death. That was why she had conceded the match.
Within a discreet meeting room at Wakigami Castle, Ryūzaki Sanosuke waited. Beside him, seated in awkward silence, was the man who still possessed Shōta's body. Rather, Dōhan was well and truly trapped within the lanky youth's form. This was a situation which Sanosuke felt his lord, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo could easily take advantage of, so he had brought the possessed boy here. And yet Yoshitakatomo had still not arrived. It was nearing midnight now, and she* was still on her* journey in the Dreamlands, despite many an assurance that she* would return soon.
It was just past midnight. Nijō Castle was quiet, save for the quiet humming of Umbriel not far away, and the moon wheeled high overhead. The perfect time for a heist. Silver General Ryūzaki Sanosuke telepathically contacted Ōtomo Sōrin to put their plan into motion. For her part, Sōrin had certainly not been idle over the evening. The other Daimyō wielded her mastery of illusion magic with a skill that allowed her to establish a visual connection between two different places. "Tele-vision," she called it. Sanosuke was suitably impressed as he retired to a nearby empty room so as not to be interrupted.
It was the darkest hour of the night; the perfect time for ninja business. It was just such ninja business which drew the five Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan to Iga. For some time, Fujibayashi Nagato had been working here to eliminate the remnants of the resistance group known as Igamono. With them out of the way, and Hattori Hanzō dead, there would be nothing standing in the way of Nagato becoming head Jōnin of the Iga Ninja. Her first order of business promised to be a formal alliance with the Hashinara Clan. Therefore, it behooved the clan to lend their aid in this final confrontation. The Igamono, staunch traditional independents, would never allow the Iga Ninja to formally ally with a clan. They were a minority now, but enough families still backed them that they could prove a threat if left alone. One such family, led by Iganozeki Butsugai, had agreed to speak with Nagato tonight. Canny and with plenty of shinobi experience to draw upon, she expected a trap. Therefore, having five of the most powerful individuals in Japan at her back was a great reassurance.
Following the day's events, there was quite a bit on Ryūzaki Sanosuke's mind. He wanted to pay a visit to Sarutaba Chino, and there was the matter of his newest prisoner, one Tomo Sukesada from the matter with the Igamono. If what Fujibayashi Nagato had told him was true, it would not be wise to leave her unaddressed for too long. Before any of that, however, Sanosuke decided to complete his original task: delivering a case of Absodium to the researchers in Wakigami Castle's basement.
In the process of going about his duties as a general, Ryūzaki Sanosuke received an unexpected correspondence from an ally. As that ally happened to be Tsukijō Hanahane, the message went on for quite some time. By its end, Sanosuke had picked through enough of the flowery language to get a grip on what was happening. It seemed that a business rival of Hanahane's had arrived in Japan. Rather than deal with more competition than Juntoku no Chukyō already offered, the flamboyant vessel had directed this newcomer to the Silver Meteor Storm instead. Indeed, she should be arriving at Nijō Castle any minute now...
Passing through one of the corridors of Nijō Castle on his way somewhere else, Ryūzaki Sanosuke was almost moving so quickly that he missed a great tear in the wall to his right. It wasn't a hole in the material. Not as such. Instead, it looked like a rip in the very world, revealing a bare portion of somewhere else beyond. As Sanosuke slowed and investigated the anomaly, he was in a prime position to observe the dapper man who strolled through. A cane came first, followed by an immaculately-trousered leg. Then, the rest of the gentleman, topped by a fine mop of white hair.
Starting with the dawn, the Mōri Martial Arts Tournament once again saw a fine turnout from all across the land. Either all these generals had some manner of quick transportation, comparable to the Hashinara Clan's teleportation network, or they were staying in Shimonoseki for the duration. Perhaps a combination of both. The morning proceeded with a series of intense fights and only a single death. Once all was done, Fubuki, Honda Tadakatsu, Maxim, and Momo would be advancing to the independent semifinals. Accounts of their matches can be found elsewhere. During and after the bouts, however, a few other events of interest were happening throughout the crowd.
Upon receiving the strange doll bearing his likeness, Ryūzaki Sanosuke had immediately given it over to Takenaka Hanbei for examination. The small tactician gave it her usual magical once-over, but then shook her head. Nothing in this doll's construction or otherwise gave off any kind of supernatural signature. It was truly just a handcrafted felt-and-cotton doll. The most interesting thing about it was that it was wearing Sanosuke's confident good looks. To that note, Hanbei asked if she could keep the thing. Not just for selfish reasons. Rather, she would have more time to check it out in detail if she could take it with her, and therefore be doubly sure that the doll posed no threat to any of them. Supernaturally inert as it was, it was still a gift from a demon. Sanosuke agreed, although he felt a little strange at giving such an item away.
The Silver General, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, had a problem. Indeed, he had many problems. It was a chronic condition that came as part and parcel of being one of the most powerful men in Japan. One particular problem, however, was demanding his attention after the morning tournament matches had finished. Only yesterday, Sanosuke had welcomed young foreign heiress Chōko Dufour into the Silver Meteor Storm. Now, the very next day, he was beginning to get an inkling of why even Tsukijō Hanahane was wary of the "Devil in Dandelion." Miss Dufour had been making full use of the greater Hashinara Clan's mental network all morning, and now seemed poised to take full control of their research group, S.P.I.R.A.L.. That organization's current leader, Sarutaba Chino, seemed fine with the idea. Chino wasn't much of a leader in any case, and would no doubt enjoy being able to put all her focus on research rather than attempting to head a department with administrative skills she didn't possess. That is, if Sanosuke thought that they could trust Chōko Dufour.
In the winter sun, with the oven of the Black Toad Inn behind him, Greasy Ii began to sweat. He'd been completely unable to do anything about that ruffian (Maxim, was it?) throwing his weight around and trying to kidnap cute little Oyau. And now, when he'd gone as far as to throw himself upon the mercy of the Silver General, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, it seemed his plea had fallen on deaf ears.
It was time for the final match; that which would determine the victor of the clan portion of the Mōri Clan Tournament. The Hashinara Clan would be facing the Ryūzōji Clan and each of the Cardinal Generals had managed to make it to watch. All, that is, except Hashinara Yoshitakatomo. Instead, the Daimyō had a sobering announcement for her* generals.
At the sound and light, the gathered crowd looked as one to the center of the arena. There, under a fading shower of fireworks, stood an unfamiliar figure and The Black Blade of Doom: Date Masamune. They faced each other and seemed ready to battle. From the southeastern quadrant, a gasp rang out. It was Katakura Kojūrō. Neither she nor Masuda Kita seemed thrilled at the appearance of another Date Masamune. Indeed, there were some murmurs worming their way through the crowd. Wasn't Date Masamune dead, obliterated by Musashibō Benkei in the tournament? Mōri Motonari's voice cut through the muddle like a blade. She chided both the unknown figure and Masamune. There were no further fights scheduled that day and, what's more, their intrusion on the field when she was about to announce the champion's prize was far too presumptuous. At a swelling of support from the crowd, the two rivals backed down. They would have their battle after the ceremonies concluded.
Hashinara Yoshitakatomo awoke in near-total darkness. It was difficult to say how much time had passed. Still, the sun's rays were still bright in the one window illuminating the room. Time passed strangely sometimes, in the Dreamlands. Perhaps that was why Yoshitakatomo felt so refreshed, as though she* had enjoyed a full night's rest. Her* magical reserves, too, were somewhat replenished. In the shadows across from the Daimyō, a red-masked figure stirred. It was one of Ashiya Dōman's Deep Wraiths. As an extension of Dōman himself, it had taken up post here so that the old onmyōji would know when his master was awake. The creature spoke haltingly, as though not used to having only one mouth with which to communicate. From it, Yoshitakatomo learned that the people of Queen's Landing had not been idle.
Under the pervasive sound of running water, the Hashinara expedition took stock of their situation. Despite Matsumoto Ooawagaeri's best efforts, only five of them had made the transition into the Caves of Life. Those were the Black Blade himself, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, Oyama Hikari, and Umashiashikabihikoji. What's more, a path of melting shadows in the corner of their entryway had just detached itself from the darkness and began speaking to them. This creature, for it did seem to be a humanoid form of some sort, claimed herself to be a steward of these caves, appointed by Omoikane. She first thought the interlopers to be thieves, then became disappointing when Yoshitakatomo asserted that they were not. Thieves, at least, would be something interesting. Mere acolytes of the Goddess would no doubt fail to hold this steward's interest. It was her duty to help them find what they sought but, as bored by the centuries as she was, the guiding shadow would not give up her secrets so simply. Instead, she invited the Hashinara group to participate in a game. A riddle. Should they solve it, she would give them her aid without hesitation. This seemed perhaps unnecessary, but it was at least in line with the ways of the Goddess of Secrets. Yoshitakatomo agreed to the terms.
The list below comprises a record of Objects of Interest (OI) discovered during the Hashinara Clan's first expedition into the Caves of Life. OI1, OI2, and OI5 are considered to pose a low level of risk. OI3 is confirmed to be a high-risk object. OI4's risk level remains unknown. Darkness. Emptiness. The comfort of water's embrace. In the distance, a sole sound. Rushing. Echoing. We wait, unmoving. The stillness is not unlike death. Yet we have not died, will not die. We share a purpose, have waited an age to fulfill it. Now, the time is at hand. The acolyte approaches. Sworn to Omoikane. His being has been sundered, split into four by Zo-Kalar. Trapped in the body of a scavenger. The silent voice of decay courts him, but he does not listen.
After the eventful match between Maxim and Momo, yet before Mōri Motonari's Yashiki Summit, a small sliver of time was almost lost to the ages. Yet events did transpire during that sliver, and they are no less worthy of our attention. Let us consider them now...
At the behest of Daimyō Mōri Motonari, many of the leaders from today's tournament arrived at Yakisoba Yashiki for lunch and a summit. Their topic of conversation was none other than the cataclysm which had broken the sky at the tournament but a few hours ago, and the creatures it had released into the world. Given that this was an event which could no doubt affect all of Japan, Motonari was disappointed to see how few leaders had opted to attend. Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the current Shogun, was at least in attendance, with her adviser Chitosemaru standing slyly behind her. Also present were Aotsuki Tsukamoto of the young Aotsuki Clan and the many other heads of the Hashinara hydra. Even Niiro Tadatsuru, Daimyō of the roguish Shimazu was lazily kicking her feet up on the table, with some manner of Wani whispering advice into her ear. No representatives of the Hōjō or Takeda arrived, however, and nor did anyone from the Alexandrian detachment visiting the city. It would have to do. As Hospodar Mikhail finished writing down their orders in his red velvet notebook and vanished to the kitchens, Motonari began the meeting.
After Mōri Motonari's Yashiki Summit, yet before the eventful match between Maxim and Fubuki, a small sliver of time was almost lost to the ages. Yet events did transpire during that sliver, and they are no less worthy of our attention. Let us consider them now...
It was past the sun's zenith on the first day of Metatron's reawakened sentience when he was approached by six humans of particular repute. Those named Ryūzaki Sanosuke and Aotsuki Tsukamoto bore the marks of lesser deities themselves. The others, Imamura Naiku, Mary Lyn, Takayama Ukon, and Takenaka Hanbei, were great in spirit or passion measured on the scale of mortals. Many had attempted to pass through to Samayim. Yet it was Metatron's role as Keeper of the Watch to bar all but the chosen few from entry. It was also his nature as the Burning Bush to speak. To convey the Almighty's word. Yet he had no voice in this form, in this purpose. The contradiction was its own torment.
Within the ruins of Sumiyoshi-taisha, Ryūzaki Sanosuke's eyes had well and truly glazed over as Metatron continued his endless lecture. "Ah yes, the sphere, or 'sephirot' as they are sometimes called. There are ten of them, as I mentioned, reaching from Keter, the crown, down to Malkuth, the earth. Indeed, I am a manifestation of these concepts myself, thus my appearance as a tree in this mortal world. It is not a shape I am bound to, but it is one in which I am most comfortable. Likewise, I sit on the Divine Council as representative for Keter, but in truth that set belongs to the Lord God. Just as I represent Him in speaking to you, I represent Him on the council. From the crown to the earth, I delivery heavenly knowledge. It is my duty and my joy to do so." Meanwhile, Aotsuki Tsukamoto was waiting patiently on the outskirts of Metatron's barrier. He looked up idly at the moth girl bumping her way across the unseen wall far above. Bonk. Bonk. He squinted as a small piece of light appeared to detach itself from the rift around it and began to descend toward him. He might not have seen it at all, had he not been looking up there already.
Certainly, there were other threats facing the Empire of Japan, yet none of them had the sheer immediacy and scale of those Angels who had descended and professed to pass judgment on humanity. With this in mind, Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Ryūzaki Sanosuke (perhaps for other reasons) assembled a small coalition of minds and muscle to make the journey to Samayim. There, they would meet with the Divine Council so that Aotsuki might argue their case. According to Ishim Ariel and Adriel, however, their path would not be without opposition from the forces of Geburah, the Arbiters. So it was that Amenotokotachi, Aoki Michiko, Haro Uin, Momose Nao, Mary Lyn, and Trivia accompanied their lords and angels guarding such into the rift of heaven.
Against the looming threat of the Unstoppable Holiday Force, Yukijirushi Santazaemon, the brave Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan gathered up their presents and hopped on the Holiday Express heading north. Perhaps in the snowy fields of Hokkaido they could find some peace. But it was not to be. That monstrous champion of Oyamatsumi, Santazaemon, caught up with the speeding train and violently inserted himself into the last car. It was up to the Cardinal Generals and what allies they had been able to gather on such short notice to hold the monster off. If they could just survive until the Christmas Tree at the front of the train gathered enough Holiday Cheer... It was the last hope they had for a jolly Christmas.
