Aotsuki Tsukamoto is brought forth, and the midwife looks upon him with a gasp.
An accurate and objective account of the events of Lord Aotsuki Tsukamoto's life, with a particular focus on his service to the Hashinara Clan and eventual founding of the Aotsuki Clan.
Now accustomed to his new powers, Hashinara Katamoto gathers those who are still loyal to him. These include Ryūzaki Sanosuke, a capable general who served his daughter, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, a humble but beautiful farm boy with a silver tongue, and Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, dark scion to the clan responsible for his resurrection.
Hashinara Katamoto and his new generals meet with legendary bandit group Goemon's Virtuous Thieves. Through revelry, they convince Raizō and his bandits to join in on an attack on Wakigami Castle to free Katamoto's assets from their new rulers.
After a heated battle with the Yasutane Clan, who occupied the fortress in his absence, Hashinara Katamoto and his generals reestablish control over Wakigami Castle and, by extension, Yamato Province.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto attends a party held by a wealthy local nobleman, Tsukijō Hanahane, first meeting a man who would become one of the clan's most notorious allies.
A massive, invisible skeleton suddenly attacks Tōdai-ji after the battle between Tōdaisen Nobuhara and Yokokazu Ume. Although driven off by Katsusada Shishauezaemon and allies, this event presages military movements by the Chōsokabe Clan who inhabit Shikkoku to the west.
A horde of undead creatures, led by a general of the Chōsokabe Clan attack the Canal District of Wakigami. With the support of Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his trusted generals, they are driven back with few civilian casualties and their leader captured.
In response to the invasion of the Chōsokabe Clan, key generals Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke are deployed to Kii to investigate the situation.
Having finished their investigation of Kii, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri and Aotsuki Tsukamoto travel to Shima Province to meet with the Daimyō of the Tanahase Clan and enquire regarding Katsusada Shishauezaemon's missive.
Upon arriving in Shima, Aotsuki Tsukamoto personally convinces Tanahase Muramatsu to ally his Tanahase Clan with the Hashinara.
Their objectives completed, Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Matsumoto Ooawagaeri return to Wakigami.
Investigating rumors of Oni attacks, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and Ryūzaki Sanosuke both begin traveling to Kongobu-ji in eastern Kii. Having just returned to Wakigami, Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Matsumoto Ooawagaeri are both ordered to make for the temple as well.
The four major generals of the Hashinara complete their journey and reunite for the first time since the attack on Kii began.
Upon arrival at Kongobu-ji, the generals of the Hashinara discover that the resident priests have all been slain by unknown individuals. Though there were rumors of an Oni here, these wounds seem to have been inflicted by weapons.
While investigating the slaughter at Kongobu-ji, the generals of the Hashinara encounter a monstrous Oni just south of the temple. They engage in battle against it, but Katsusada Shishauezaemon's magic freezes the creature in place and then dominates its mind, turning it into an ally.
After dealing with Baby Huey, the generals of the Hashinara encounter the true perpetrators behind the slaughter of priests at Kongobu-ji: a pair of Kyonshi named Amenotokotachi and Umashiashikabihikoji. The Hashinara forces engage them in battle and slay both without allied casualties. Both corpses are put into Katsusada Shishauezaemon's care.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto is sent to meet with Tsukijō Hanahane and request his official support for the Hashinara Clan. Because of their previous dealings, and perhaps because of Aotsuki's own beauty, Hanahane is quick to agree.
Guided by Tsukuda Katsuo, the four major generals of the Hashinara Clan travel to Iga to meet with Fujibayashi Nagato.
Upon arriving at Iga, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his most trusted generals (plus Baby Huey) are led to a secluded tea house and meet with Fujibayashi Nagato of the Iga Ninja. Before the meeting can proceed, however, the group is attacked by two Igamono, Crocodile and Stoplight. When the two are near defeat, the leader of the Igamono, Vengeance joins the fray. After a desperate battle in which Baby Huey is slain, all three enemy ninja are defeated and Vengeance captured.
Upon returning to Kongobu-ji with the intent of inspecting new priests instated to take control of the shrine, Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his generals instead find that the onmyōji have been killed and raised as zombies. A short battle ensues, in which the offending undead are slaughtered and the area cleaned. No further attempt to colonize this accursed shrine would be undertaken for quite some time after.
Key generals Ryūzaki Sanosuke and Aotsuki Tsukamoto are sent as agents of the Hashinara to request an official alliance with Tsuchimi Takasuke, Daimyō of the neighboring Tsuchimi Clan. Convinced by a combination of Aotsuki's silver tongue and Sanosuke's stalwart support during his last military engagement, the old man agrees.
The two Kyonshī captured from a previous skirmish with the Chōsokabe Clan are later revived by Katsusada Shishauezaemon and placed under his control. The first, Amenotokotachi is assigned to serve Ryūzaki Sanosuke, while the second, Umashiashikabihikoji is sent to reinforce Aotsuki Tsukamoto. Meanwhile, Katamoto keeps Kamimusubi, the third of their Kotoamatsukami, as his own servant.
Hashinara forces make landing at Awa Harbor and engage with the Chōsokabe Clan's forces stationed there under the command of Chōsokabe Nobuchika. As the Chōsokabe Forsaken troops are defeated, Nobuchika is captured, and another enemy general, Motoyama Tsugutoshi is released from their apparent supernatural control. During the conflict, Ishikawa Goemon faces off with Momochi Sandayu, her former master, now Forsaken and culprit behind an attempted assassination on Katsusada Shishauezaemon. Goemon suffers a severe wound to the stomach, but Sandayu is slain.
After the conquest of Awa Harbor, generals and troops of the Hashinara Clan rest for several days to allow their injuries to heal and await word from Aotsuki Tsukamoto's diplomatic mission.
Famed diplomat Aotsuki Tsukamoto is sent to Iyo Province to meet with the resident clan's Daimyō, Nishiuwa Matsutake. The journey takes him a day, and upon arrival, he is welcomed warmly. Matsutake explains that he has no love for the actions of the Chōsokabe Clan, but also cannot forge an official alliance with the Hashinara due to existing ties with the Mōri Clan. He connects Aotsuki with three of said Oni clan's emissaries: Hoshikuma-dōji, Toraguma-dōji, and Kanaguma-dōnyo.
Following his diplomatic mission to Iyo, Aotsuki Tsukamoto returns to the Hashinara camp with a legion of Oni in accompaniment, loaned to him by representatives of the Mōri Clan.
With Oni forces on loan from the Mori Clan, Hashinara forces begin their march north from Awa to Chosokabe Clan-occupied Sanuki. Their objective is to defeat Forsaken forces stationed at Takamatsu Castle and return control of both the fortress and the province to Motoyama Tsugutoshi, Daimyō of the Motoyama Clan.
Hashinara forces led by Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his four most trusted generals march on Takamatsu Castle in Sanuki to engage the occupying Chōsokabe Clan. Upon arrival, they find the battlefield cloaked in a magical mist, and must fight their way through a pack of Nue, supernatural predators which use the fog to deadly advantage. Commanding the enemy forces are Chōsokabe Kanetsugu and Chōsokabe Kunichika. After a difficult battle due to field conditions, the former general is captured and the latter is slain in battle as the Hashinara claim victory.
Under the command of Katsusada Shishauezaemon and his most trusted generals, Hashinara forces march south from Sanuki, through Awa, and into Tōsa Province. They stage in the wastelands there for their final assault on Nankoku and the Chōsokabe Clan.
Hashinara forces led by Katsusada Shishauezaemon attack Nankoku in an attempt to destroy the Chōsokabe Clan and the threat posed by their Forsaken once and for all. They are met by Chōsokabe Motochika, going under her adopted name of Amenominakanushi, a giant Forsaken called Arehate Daidara, and a number of other powerful generals and troops. With a final blow from Baby Huey, the Hashinara slay Motochika and seem as though they will succeed, but the enemy general's death leads to a black hole that threatens to devour the entirety of Tōsa or worse. Only through the timely use of a secret technique passed on to Ishikawa Goemon by her mentor Momochi Sandayu is the disaster averted and victory truly claimed. When the disaster is averted, all Forsaken have vanished and only the Hashinara remain in Nankoku's ruins.
While the other generals are preoccupied with events in Wakigami, Aotsuki Tsukamoto fulfills his mission of traveling to the province of Iyo on the northern edge of Shikkoku. There, he meets with Nishiuwa Matsutake, Daimyō of the minor Nishiuwa Clan. Although Matsutake is not able to form an official alliance with the Hashinara due to his existing ties with the Mōri Clan, Aotsuki is able to negotiate for favorable trade agreements and access to the location's extensive shipyards.
Upon hearing from an Administrative Flunky that Matsutada Tadamatsu, emissary from the Imperial Court has failed to reach a second checkpoint in Wakigami, Katsusada Shishauezaemon gathers his most talented generals as a search party to find the missing diplomat. His actions are hastened by news that Vengeance has escaped from the castle's dungeons. They have not traveled far into the Canal District when they are attacked by a group of Igamono ninja. Shishauezaemon battles alongside Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, Kamimusubi, and Yoshitaka Hitsuie to fight off the would-be assassins, but it is a brutal battle. Partway through the unnamed Administrative Flunky turns on Shishauezaemon and attempts to land a killing blow, but is rebuffed by the timely arrival of Fujibayashi Nagato. With the attacking ninja dead, the Flunky escapes, but Hitsuie is able to follow his tracks to an unlikely destination: The Tsukijō Wakigami Manor.
Following the "Administrative Flunky's" tracks to the Tsukijō Wakigami Manor, the generals find that it has already been taken by Igamono. They enter the building's basement cautiously, and are confronted by a man who looks and sounds exactly like Katsusada Shishauezaemon. When questioned by the real Shishauezaemon, the impostor claims that he already spoke to the envoy from the Imperial Court. Among other misinformation, Matsutada Tadamatsu was told that the Hashinara attacked the Chōsokabe Clan on a personal slight, and that the Ashikaga Shogunate should mind its own business on threat of war. Before the discussion could progress any further, Fujibayashi Nagato attacked the impostor from the shadows and a full battle broke out between Hashinara elite and the lurking Igamono. Among their top priorities was the rescue of Tsukijō no Yumeno, tied to a post in the middle of the cellar, but this too was revealed to be a ninja fake. She was slain with the rest, but in the chaos, a single Igamono managed to cut off the real Katsusada Shishauezaemon's head. With the enigmatic words, "Vengeance has been served," the man accepted his death at the others' hands. As panic spread, Chōsokabe Morichika stole Matsumoto Ooawagaeri out of the chaos. With a few quick words, however, Ryūzaki Sanosuke was able to regain control of the situation, and the Igamono suffered a brutal defeat. After the battle, the real Tsukijō no Yumeno was found in a nearby barrel. She was unharmed, merely tied up, and corroborated the story that the fake Shishauezaemon had told them before.
At the request of Ryūzaki Sanosuke, Aotsuki Tsukamoto dispatches to catch up with Matsutada Tadamatsu before the other can get too far from Wakigami. The diplomat in question is carrying a rude message from a false, Igamono-compromised Katsusada Shishauezaemon, so if he manages to return to Echizen Province as is, the results could be disastrous. Aided by a squad of Iga Ninja, Aotsuki is able to catch up to Tadamatsu. The stuffy governor immediately assumes it's an attack, and calls on his companion Minamoto no Yoshitsune to protect him. That turns out not to be necessary, however, as Aotsuki quickly and eloquently explains the situation. The golden boy's golden tongue does the trick, and Tadamatsu is reluctantly persuaded that the Shishauezaemon he spoke to was indeed an imposter. He goes on to deliver the message that was originally intended for the clan. The Hashinara are held in contempt of the Ashikaga Shogunate, he explains, due to their unsanctioned war against the Chōsokabe. They will be forgiven, however, if they deal with the Ryūzōji Clan: a group of upstarts who have taken over Osaka in Setsu Province and driven the Hosokawa south into Izumi Province. The two make to part ways, but Yoshitsune first takes the opportunity to ask Aotsuki to keep an eye out for a wandering monk by the name of Musashibō Benkei. The two are old companions, she explains, but have been separated for a long time. Aotsuki agrees, and departs with hopes that their next meeting with Tadamatsu will not be so venemous.
In order to prepare for their upcoming mission against the Ryūzōji Clan, major generals of the Hashinara are dispatched to neighboring clans to ask for their assistance. Aotsuki Tsukamoto goes north to Yamashiro Province, to meet with the local Harizono Clan and its Daimyō, Harizono Yoshinatsu. Though Aotsuki is as glib as always, Yoshinatsu is notoriously ill-humored, a puppet of the Ashikaga Shogunate. He rebuffs the approach and sends Aotsuki back to Wakigami empty-handed. To the west, in Kawachi Province, Ryūzaki Sanosuke has much better luck in convincing Tsuchimi Takasuke of the Tsuchimi Clan to join their cause. So long as they receive good pay, he offers himself and three squads of mounted samurai to the upcoming battle.
After the battles for the day, Aotsuki Tsukamoto is approached unexpectedly by Hikyū. She hints that through her associates, she knows that he's seeking to break a curse, and suggests he should do so through Inari-no-Okami. The best way to accomplish this, according to her, would be to go on a pilgrimage on foot from Shimonoseki to The Crescent Moon Collective. From her words, it seemed to Aotsuki that the experiences on the journey would be more important than the distance traveled. Before Hikyū could leave, Aotsuki remembered her performance in previous battles and saw an opportunity to train his own defensive skills. She was blatantly not interested, but eventually agreed to help Aotsuki free someone for entertainment, namely Mōri Hibiki uniquely imprisoned nearby. After a failed(?) rescue attempt, Hikyū still refused to teach Aotsuki, but pointed him toward Ibaraki-dōnyo, who knows the same skill.
After calling upon Imamura Naikū to magically banish negative emotions and relieve the mental burden experienced by the samurai guarding Shōjō, Aotsuki Tsukamoto places the belligerent young girl into the priestess' care. It's the White Frog's hope that something of the ex-gangster's own character development will rub off on her new young charge.
In order to purge any lingering curses left from his encounter with Mekurabe, Aotsuki Tsukamoto undergoes a banishment ritual performed by Abe no Seimei. Though the ceremony seems to have no effect, Seimei assures him that any remaining influences have been purged. She goes on to warn him that, should he ever become a Chimera or something else not quite human, the same ritual could have unpredictable results.
In their search for a powerful summoner to bind Honda Tadakatsu, Maxim and Haures meet with Abe no Seimei in Ōtsu Castle. Intrigued by Haures' exotic nature, Seimei first requests information in recompense for her assistance. Maxim's suggestion of aiding her in a personal vengeance, however, piques her interest. Seimei agrees to help if the Commander of the Wolfpack and his demon can find and bring Ashiya Dōman low before her, but she cannot guarantee the man is even still alive. She's careful to make clear that, should they fail, she will ask for another form of payment in vengeance's place. With the summoning circle in Seimei's lab posing a threat to Haures, the three and Katatada Denzaemon agree to move upward into a meeting room in the castle to continue their discussion. Once there, Haures outlines the steps that must be taken to seal a demon, while Seimei confirms that she will be available to perform the binding once Maxim is ready, though more advance warning is better. She goes on to describe Maxim's target in return, Ashiya Dōman. Charming and handsome in his own way, according to her memory, though stout of build and with a receding hairline. He was last seen at the capital in Echizen, but truly could be anywhere now. Before the meeting concludes, Maxim thinks to ask about Hokku Kamui, and receives a surprising answer. Despite what Hashinara Yoshitakatomo had told him, the White Thunder had apparently been seen within the past decade. What's more, he was slain and a meal made of him by Aotsuki Tsukamoto's castle chef, Isaki Annette. Bewildered, and under the weight of Denzaemon's dark monologue, Maxim requests to meet with Annette. Seimei agrees, and says that Abura Akago will guide him to the kitchen.
While picking up Tokku-hime for their dinner with Ikkyū, Aotsuki Tsukamoto's wife points out that he's wearing the same thing he always does. Though they don't have a lot of time, Tokku produces a Shimmering Fishscale Kimono that Ekko prepared in advance, and Aotsuki changes into it before they leave for the party.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto and his wife, Tokku-hime, attend a party being held by Ikko Ikki monk Ikkyū at Ikkyū-ji. Upon their arrival, they find a number of rural-looking wagons lined up, as though most of those in attendance are farmers. Upon entering, Aotsuki is warmly greeted by Ikkyū with only a few hints of malice. The others in attendance are introduced as Ando Kagesuke, Arima Masasuke, Ito Takesuke, Iwamura Yoshisuke, Yashiro Katsusuke, and Mori the Blind. Ikkyū also mentions other guests that may or may not be attending, as well as a resident songstress, in passing. Dinner is a surprisingly pleasant, if overcooked affair, with the Five Guys all delighted by Aotsuki's charming tales of his life as a farmer. The only notable incident occurs when Mori the Blind excuses himself and trips, falling heavily upon Tokku-hime. Neither seem to be hurt, and nothing is out of place. After the meal has concluded, Ikkyū invites Aotsuki to sit for one of Mori the Blind's unique painting sessions before he leaves. To cut out distractions, this must apparently be undertaken alone. First taking proper precautions with his wife, Aotsuki agrees and follows Mori to the adjacent room.
Not wanting to be rude, and admittedly curious about a blind painter, Aotsuki Tsukamoto sits for a portrait from Mori the Blind at Ikkyū's dinner party. The painting room, conveniently next to the dining chamber, is lined with curious paintings on parchment in a chaos of monochrome. Even Aotsuki's untrained eye can see the beauty in the pieces. After some brief banter in which he reveals that Ikkyū is his sponsor, Mori begins by informing Aotsuki that he will need to feel his facial features in order to paint a portrait. With that, he blows out the only candle lighting the room, and approaches Aotsuki in the darkness. The White Frog feels a pair of hands over his own face in an uncomfortable few moments. Worse, they seem to have left some wet residue behind on his face and clothing. Brush strokes sound from the other side of the room, and not long later, a sigh. Aotsuki waits, but nothing else occurs until Arima Masasuke opens the door and reveals Mori the Blind lying dead in a pool of his own blood. The rest of the Five Guys of Mino quickly arrive at the door, and Yashiro Katsusuke immediately accuses Aotsuki of perpetrating the murder in rage at Mori crashing into his wife earlier. Before even attempting to refute these accusations, Aotsuki immediately crosses the room and uses a part of his being, as well as the blessing of Amaterasu, to bring Mori back to life. The blind painter struggles to his knees and thrusts his finished painting into Aotsuki's hands before collapsing again, but Ando Kagesuke confirms that he's just unconscious this time. At the back of the crowd, Aotsuki catches sight of an unholy expression of rage and hatred upon the face of Ikkyū before the monk vanishes. Immediately after, Tokku-hime informs him that Ikkyū is attempting to escape. Aotsuki cautions her not to follow him, but instead calls Shigeaki Fujino to summon the Hashinara Clan's best tracker.
As if drawn into a dream against their own volition, in a time and space not quite connected with what they know as reality, the heroes of the Hashinara Clan found themselves in a wasteland. Here, they were pitted against Deathlord☠Troxiom, a monstrous evil general in the midst of a ritual that would make him unstoppable. Alongside them was Date Masamune [Hero]. Queerer still for Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, he found himself to be Masamune, with his body only nominally under his own control and his mouth speaking words he did not intend. Together they battled against Troxiom in an attempt to rescue Katakura Kojūrō [Damsel], but their attacks had little effect on the bone-armored titan at the height of his power. Date Masamune (Hero) summoned his companions to the fight, his weapons glowing bright, but they did not heed his call. It was Ryūzaki Sanosuke's clever idea to write with a conjured pen on the story-scrawling scroll in the background, albeit with little effect. Maxim held the line and traded blows with Troxiom, but could not fell him. Aotsuki Tsukamoto called upon his companion Kagami to pelt their adversary with spheres of light, weak as they were. Still, such setbacks mattered little in the face of Hashinara Yoshitakatomo's incredible magic prowess. With an unseen grasp of mystic power, she* took the story scroll's magic for her* own, and became the effective god of this corner of The Dreamlands. Even by Yoshitakatomo's hand, the battle continued for some time. At the end, Deathlord☠Troxiom lay broken upon the ground. Date Masamune (Hero) was victorious, thanks to his stalwart companions, and Katakura Kojūrō (Damsel) was saved. With the threat gone, the dream dissolved, and our heroes were sent victorious back to the present world. Richer, perhaps, than when they entered, and with the clout of heroism to buoy them through the difficult times ahead. Indeed, it seems that Maxim took something more substantial with him, as the Deathlord's magnificent weapon, the Deathlord Buster, followed him into the waking world.
With Ikkyū's disappearance after framing Aotsuki Tsukamoto for a murder, the Five Guys of Mino begin to comment on the smokey smell in the air. It's quickly apparent that the temple is on fire, likely by the slighted monk's hand. Aotsuki orders his companions outside before proceeding further in to rescue the "songstress" Ikkyū spoke of earlier. A few rooms in he finds her, but the Bakeushi woman is chained to a post in the ground. Aotsuki smashes the chain with his shield and lifts her, but the fire has already engulfed the door behind him. Using his finely-honed tactician's mind, Aotsuki spots the point where the fire is weakest, and leaps through. Though the flames are hot on his fishscale kimono, he is not burned. Unable to save more than a handful of Mori the Blind's paintings from the studio, Aotsuki wastes no time in rushing outside before the building burns down. Upon reaching the night air, however, Kagami yells for him to watch out. Aotsuki spots a burning fuse about to reach the offering box mere feet away, and has only seconds to act. He leaps, and the explosion from the powder-packed box sends him flying. As he lands, his arm snaps, but he keeps hold of the damsel and manages to make it to his friends. Having been working overtime, Shigeaki Fujino had already brought Kanna and First Mate Yūji on Aotsuki's request. Now she goes to find a healer. Meanwhile, Aotsuki checks Mori the Blind. The painter is still unconscious, but the inspection causes a scroll to come to light. Aotsuki glimpses something about orders for Mori to kill himself and make it look like a murder. Grim-faced, he sends the Five Guys on to Inabayama Castle in Mino to await his return with Saitō Dōsan. With his wounds healed by Yatsukahagi and Yajji called in to help find the monk, Aotsuki relies on First Mate Yūji's nose to find the trail. The beloved dog's waddling brings them across the muddy plains and to a shack where it seems Ikkyū had hidden emergency supplies and an escape horse. Aotsuki has little chance of catching up with him now, but another visit from Mekurabe promises him a stroke of luck in discovering his quarry. However, the yōkai demands hefty compensation. Twenty miles of land from Aotsuki's own holdings, to be settled by Jakotsu Otome and the Shirohebi Ikki, with no humans allowed. Though expensive, the proposition is tempting, as Ikkyū continues to grow further away, and according to Abe-no-Seimei, a yōkai called Kotobuki could very well bring him great luck in bringing justice to the horrible old man. Though the offer is tempting, Aotsuki eventually declines, deciding that he cannot forbid humans to enter land on which they may already have homes. As soon as he answers, Mekurabe is gone. It seems like the monk has too great of a lead to follow tonight in the dark, so Aotsuki returns to his companions and orders the chase to be abandoned for now.
Investigating reports from Juntoku no Chūkyō regarding a mysterious merchant in Awa Harbor, the five generals of the Hashinara clan quickly found the racketeer in question. Clad from toe to tip in black cloth, with a white mask under his hat, the merchant spoke with a strange, grinding voice and moved with jerky twitches. For all this, he seemed friendly enough, and explained that he was selling poor-quality swords, failures, in bulk. Though these weapons were anything but poor-quality, Fubuki recognized them as being crafted by the same legendary smith notorious for making "Cursed" weapons. Not wanting any more of these blades distributed to the public, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo bought the whole cart, only to have another cart wheel itself out of the house behind the merchant, full to the brim with more blades. With the help of his Sheele, Aotsuki Tsukamoto recognized gears beneath the cart's wheels as the source of its self-locomotion. Karakuri, according to Yoshitakatomo, a kind of trick clockwork popular among the richer classes for entertainment. Meanwhile, Fubuki had transmuted into a tiny fox and stolen into the house. Inside were four more copies of the same merchant. Further inspection showed them to be more wood and gears under their robes than humans. Before Fubuki's investigation could continue, it was interrupted by a shower of bombs with various coy expressions painted on them from the rafters above. First a flashbang, then three smoke grenades that masked the disappearance of the merchants within. By this point, Maxim had burst through the door and was attempting to save the man he saw inside, but with little luck. A few moments and a powerful breath from Sanosuke dispelled the smoke, but the clockwork men were nowhere to be seen. Outside, Kagami pointed out that she'd seen a person on the roof, and Tama found a discharged bomb with a sullen face drawn on it. At the same time, the first merchant had suddenly changed its tune, confirming that yes, Yoshitakatomo actually could meet the smith behind those fine weapons. Fubuki teleported beneath the floor-boards, while Maxim followed by use of a trapdoor Sanosuke had pointed out during an investigation of the interior. Transforming her*self into a hat, Fubuki rested on one of the marching merchant's heads as they progressed through a tunnel until reaching a stone room with more carts of weapons. Also present, watching over them, was a mysterious creature comprising a cloak tapering to blades at the end and a mass of vaguely humanoid red ribbons under a death-marked mask. The Blade Wraith immediately spotted Fubuki even through the disguise and, while she* fought valiantly for a hat, the four "merchants" and creature were able to slay her* in short order. Before falling, Fubuki had sent a message to Yoshitakatomo covering the situation and the princess-daimyō was about to make her* own magical entrance just as Maxim reached the door. Both were too late to save Fubuki, but perhaps she* can still be rescued from true death if they act quickly enough. Standing in their way, though, were the Blade Wraith and four karakuri merchants, now revealed to be hideous clockwork dolls under the guise.
Moments after the death of Fubuki (in hat form), Hashinara Yoshitakatomo teleports the remainder of the party into the shadows of the cavern below. They arrive at the same time as Maxim, who departed first on foot. Although Yoshitakatomo has used a large amount of energy transporting the group, especially Kagami and Tama who are technically artifacts, the group wastes no time in engaging the mottled group of mechanical dolls. Despite its fearsome showing before, the Blade Wraith falls immediately to a single swing from Ryūzaki Sanosuke. While Maxim and Sanosuke engage the remaining mechanical men in combat, Aotsuki Tsukamoto instead attempts to retrieve Fubuki. Aided by the unseen hand of Munechika, he succeeds, and calls upon Amaterasu's light to bring the deceased hat back to life. Though difficult to damage and incredibly deadly, the karakuri men are no match for Sanosuke. Soon, each is reduced to a heap on the ground except for one, whose limbs Yoshitakatomo fuses to its sides to take captive for study. Following up on an unmooring sound called out by Kagami only moments before, the warriors rush through the back of the cave and outside to a small pier. A boat was here, but through the use of karakuri trickery and possibly magic, it has vanished at speed. Even the vessel's trail stops abruptly at a certain point in the water. Whomever was here and leading these creatures, presumably the same individual with the expressive bombs, has made their escape. However, the battle was not without its gains. The Cardinal Generals now find themselves in possession of upwards of six hundred quality, possibly cursed, katana. What's more, Maxim somehow regains his two-handed sword. How could that have gotten here? It will probably remain a mystery. Taking their captive, Yoshitakatomo discovers a final clue engraved into its body. "学天即". Something like "learning from the laws of nature". A maker's mark? Perhaps this, and the now-absent original merchant's promise to deliver swords to Wakigami Castle, may yet lead to the karakuri puppetmaster behind this whole fiasco.
Once it becomes clear that finding Ikkyū may not be in the cards for the night, Aotsuki Tsukamoto sends the Abyssal two home and instead focuses on time with his wife. Tokku-hime suggests that he could help her with digging the proposed tunnel from Lake Biwa to Nijō Castle, to which he readily agrees. Returning to Lake Biwa, Tokku is surprised to find that Aotsuki can now swim and breathe underwater. The White Frog himself is unable to offer a reasonable explanation, but they happily take it in stride and move to the southwestern wall of the lake. Here, a giant drilling machine has already been installed. After a short window of confusion, with neither being skilled at anything mechanical, they manage to figure out how to work it from a control room and the drill starts haltingly forward. It's difficult to hold a conversation over the racket of metal on stone, so Aotsuki and Tokku sit in silence for a time while the machine does its thing. Suddenly, the wall in front of them crumbles away, revealing a massive chasm that the drill threatens to drop into, taking both of them with it. By the timely assistance of Geeru and more than a little luck, Aotsuki is able to activate the emergency stop, firing pistons into the surrounding rock that save it from dropping forward. It's unclear what's in the darkness below them, but Aotsuki manages to drop down haphazardly with the help of his sheele, followed closely after by Tokku. The creature they climbed down on was none other than a massive, silent Buddha carved of stone and with its hands serenely in its lap. Tending this cthonian shrine is the Ascetic in the Deep, who seems to be made of more than a bit of stone herself. She chides Aotsuki only briefly on interrupting her meditation and informs him that he's under Mount Hiei rather than his original destination, before focusing her attention on Tokku. Speaking cryptically, the Ascetic repeats that Tokku has lost something, that she is broken and wounded, and that only pain will come if she and Aotsuki continue their relationship together. The mental trauma caused by these accusations is enough to put Tokku into an almost catatonic state. Aotsuki takes her in his arms, and the Ascetic gives them a final farewell by bidding the giant stone Buddha to lift them up in its hand. By the time they regain the drill, Tokku can speak again, but doesn't want to talk about what just happened. In grave silence, the two decide to simply leave the drill there and swim back down the tunnel to Lake Biwa.
Once the pair return to Lake Biwa, Tokku-hime finally feels comfortable enough telling Aotsuki Tsukamoto more about what the monk said to her beneath the mountain. When she was young, the other Kappa of the lake forced her to undergo a ceremony linking her soul to that of Mizuchi, a powerful dragon, for the purpose of guarding the lake and their people. Such a rite has consequences, however, and something of Tokku's was lost irreversibly in the process. She doesn't know what it is, only that some part of her very self, her soul and existence as a person, is missing. She further confides that she had hoped it wouldn't come up, or interfere with her relationship with Aotsuki. Aotsuki reassures her, and suggests that the two speak to Kanni, the only kappa present at the ritual who still remains alive and in the lake. Tokku puts up some weak excuses about the crab being asleep, but Aotsuki convinces her and the two swim back to the castle at the heart of the lake and beyond to Kanni's lair. Aotsuki enters alone, as Tokku still feels awkward waking her mentor He finds Kanni dozing in a cavern filled with air, rather than water, and wakes the sleeping giant with his pleas. Although Kanni is silent(?) as always, he bids the young human to climb onto his shell, and together they exit through a passage that was previously hidden by the crab's slumbering bulk. This tunnel is somehow different, and the quality of water changes, before the two arrive in crystal water lit by dazzling sunlight. Knowing for certain that it was night when they began, Aotsuki questions this, but is interrupted by the arrival of Mizuchi himself. It seems the dragon may have been more angered by Aotsuki's trespass into his realm had he not been invited by Kanni, whom Mizuchi considers a close friend. Prompted by the boy's questions, Mizuchi explains that he too does not know what was taken from Tokku-hime, nor can he truly answer whether it was worth the power that she received in return. The wise dragon can only say that those closest to her might know what is missing better than he, and that if there is a way to reverse the loss, it is unknown to him. Dismissed, Kanni and Aotsuki ride back mostly in silence, save for the golden-haired boy monologuing about what might come in the future. He reunites with Tokku-hime outside, and explains what Mizuchi told to him. Understandably, the princess is chastened by his words, but accepts Aotsuki's offer to simply take some time and think about it. If Aotsuki will still take her, even knowing that something deep is missing, then they may not need to pursue the subject at all. The two return to the castle at the center of the lake and attempt to sneak in, but are apprehended by Ekko. The other kappa expresses frustration at them sneaking around like teenagers, and instead suggests that Tokku move in with Aotsuki or the other way around. When presented with the fact that both have important work at their respective castles, Ekko makes the simple recommendation that Tokku simply have her paperwork couriered between the two each day. There's a waterway beneath Ōtsu Castle, that should do nicely, she claims. Both of the pair seem happy with this arrangement, and with apologies to Ekko, they retire for the night.

Following his underground meeting with a dangerous "Shogun," Maxim returned from the waterways of Ōtsu Castle and sought out Aotsuki Tsukamoto for a meeting and transportation to the day's tournament in Shimonoseki. Things were not to be that simple, however. After wandering a few halls, the swordsman was hailed by none other that Watagyūma-dōnyo, a notorious trickster and malcontent somehow still free to move around the castle. At the same time, Aotsuki was rising with his wife Tokku-hime in the castle beneath Lake Biwa. In the shimmering morning light, the two discussed their dreams of the previous night. Aotsuki was surprised to find that Tokku had apparently dreamed of Ryūgūjō, a castle beneath the sea that he had visited once upon a journey. As a sacred place with a strong connection to Dragons, it seemed unlikely that her vision was unconnected to the events of the previous day.
The second day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament arrived, with festivites starting early in the morning. Special considerations had been made for the Hashinara Clan this time, with their official box expanded enough to seat a multitude of generals. From Mōri Motonari's subtle glance, Ryūzaki Sanosuke gathered that this gesture may have been made largely for him. It made sense, given the sheer number of generals he had brought once again. A fair number of other events occurred simulatenously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 2
No sooner had Fubuki magicked the sword binding Kashirin away than yet another strange event interrupted the ill-fated Mōri tournament. The more keen-eared of those in the crowd noticed it first, and brought it to the attention of their allies. A low, whistling sound was steadily growing in volume as something approached the stadium at high speed. It was not Kashirin's prisonous sword, but rather a black spear shooting down from the heavens directly at Maxim.
Whilst Maxim chatted with "Paseguru Kamui," Aotsuki Tsukamoto and his sheele, Kagami, had noticed something. In the shadow of the Knight Commander's considerable form, a dark presence had just ducked out of sight. Judging from the misfortune that had just then taken place in the arena as well, that could only be the Binbōgami Kashirin. Still wary of the dark spirit, Aotsuki wasted no time in mentally informing Ryūzaki Sanosuke.
During the matches throughout the morning, Aka no Kitsunebi had brought something troubling to her master's attention. Tenman Tenjin, the eye-marked dagger the two found on a previous adventure, had mysteriously sprouted roots and was now digging deep into Kitsunebi's hand. At a cursory examination, Fubuki determined the roots to be that of a plum tree, slowly siphoning blood from his subject's hand. It was a slow process, but if untreated, she would likely die.
When the independent matches had finished and his own representatives cautioned about the bloody nature of the tournament, Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Tokku-hime retired to Ōtsu Castle for the remainder of the morning. The young lord wished to speak with two of his financial agents, Yokko and Momoyama Shunkei, and trusted his wife's legal counsel would be valuable as well. With a word to Abe no Seimei, the two were gathered in a second-floor meeting chamber and the meeting begun.
In Setsu Province, villagers, cityfolk, and bakeneko alike have been complaining of strange dreams. The legend of Momotarō plays out before their eyes every night, albeit with a unique spin. In this rendition, "Magical Momo" is an idol, and she defeats the evil oni with her cheerful antics and cute companions. Could this spectacle just be residual thoughts from that idol competition in Wakigami? That wouldn't explain why farmers who have never seen an "idol" in their lives are having the same dreams too. It's been a while since the Gauntlet of Games, where the Date Clan implored their counterparts in the Hashinara to investigate these "dream shards" popping up all over the country. Likely it's in response to the big portal up north near their capital. Regardless, the brave generals of the Hashinara were getting around to it, and their next target was that peach-colored rift halfway between Kaya and Osaka(settlement).
Aotsuki Tsukamoto had only finished digesting the fact that he had just walked in on his adviser and Fubuki opening up a no-doubt-cursed ancient coffin when Abe no Seimei contacted him with another issue. After first verifying that the young Daimyō would not be traveling with his Matsumoto ally to Echizen Province, she informed him of something else that could require his attention. Deep in the eastern recesses of Mino Province, someone had begun founding a town. Seimei attributed this to a person of some renown, the nameless "Master" who had played an important role in the rebuilding of Wakayama.
With the sheer shock from seeing Akechi Mitsuhides soul devoured lessening, Mōri Motonari found the presence of mind to call the day’s activities to an end. She explained once again that board and accommodations would be prepared for those who wished it, and that some light entertainment would be held in the arena until the day’s evening.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto was expecting a meeting with the heads of the Oda Clan in the evening, but still had half of the afternoon to fill after tournament matches for the day had ended. Calling upon his boon companion, Saitō Dōsan, he repaired to Inabayama Castle, intent on seeing to the guests he had kept waiting. The interior of the castle, built to the specifications of Dōsan’s mighty frame, was spacious and airy, with the low sun casting beams of light through its many windows. At the top of the eponymous Inabayama Mountain, the view was unmatched. Aotsuki took only a moment to regard it, however, before calling upon the company of the Five Guys of Mino.
Returning to Inabayama Castle from Shimonoseki for the second time that day, Aotsuki Tsukamoto finally had time to address the last of his clan’s overnight visitors. The Bakeushi that he had rescued from Ikkyū’s burning temple was led to him and presented. She bowed formally, but said nothing. According to Saitō Dōsan, none of the guards had been able to tease a single word from her lips.
When Akashi Kengyō departed, he left Maxim and Ikeda Tsuneoki face to face and blade to blade. Invoking his knightly honor, Maxim offered his opponent one last chance to put down his weapons and surrender. Tsuneoki, however, was too wrapped up in his vengeance, pinning all of the injustices he had faced on the Hashinara Clan and refusing to back down. There could be no other outcome. Maxim challenged Tsuneoki to a duel.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Saitō Dōsan were among the first to arrive in the meeting chamber of Owari Castle that had been set aside for their purposes. Maxim, too, was in attendance, and soon Hashinara Yoshitakatomo arrived with an unknown stranger in her* company. The opposite side of the wide, low table was filled with the Oda Clan’s greatest remaining representatives. Oichi took the head, her position cemented by her relationship to Oda Nobunaga, previous Daimyō of the clan. Beside her stood Shibata Katsuie, her bodyguard and a proponent of this meeting. Then, along the side were Ishida Mitsunari, Azai Nagamasa, and Mori Ranmaru. Only Nagamasa’s presence between the two others seemed to be preventing them from attacking each other right there. Petty complaints and snappish insults were tossed about above the weary-looking Azai Daimyō’s head.
While the invading demon, Raym, lurked beneath the meeting room table, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo took the opportunity to cast a minor spell of healing upon the fallen. This jolted them awake, mending some of their wounds, but Azai Nagamasa was still missing an arm and Ishida Mitsunari a leg, so they were yet in no condition to rejoin the battle. Even Kagami's supernatural powers of detection couldn't pinpoint their attacker's location, save that she was somewhere under the table, so Ryūzaki Sanosuke took the most obvious route forward. Slamming his foot down in a precise, powerful strike, he exerted just enough force to snap all four legs of the table and bring it down heavily onto the floor below. So measured was his strength that those standing on the table barely had to adjust their balance. Even so, the heavy wooden slab didn't seem to meet any resistance on the way down. Either Raym was no longer down there, or her powers of shadow extended further than they knew.
Once the meeting had fully ended and Aotsuki Tsukamoto's mercenary business handled, he was free to return to Ōtsu Castle for his remaining evening plans. A strange castle, appearing only at night and apparently altering the memories of everyone under a certain threshold of power... Well, that was not something he could very well ignore. His adviser, Abe no Seimei, suggested that Maxim come along as well, and the two found her in the main hall of Ōtsu already wearing traveling gear. For a bit of extra protection, Aotsuki invited Ka-ten Agni and Sugihara Hidemitsu to come as well, but wisely kept his diplomatic party to this limited size.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto stood in a dimly lit passageway somewhere within Kannonji Castle. That strange, one-horned oni-yōkai girl had brought him here, and locked him within, but thanks to the efforts of Kagami and Tama, he had been able to escape. His allies, Abe no Seimei, Maxim, Ka-ten Agni, and Sugihara Hidemitsu, were all still outside the firmly-shut castle gate. Though he could communicate with them mentally, that left him alone to figure out a way to escape. Hoping to avoid another encounter with Rokkaku no Ateshi, Aotsuki moved first to his right. It was harder to tell after his whirlwind entrance to the place, but if he had to guess, he’d say he was heading east. Late as it was, most of the castle had retired, and none remained in the corridor to challenge him. He tried to muffle the sounds of his clanking equipment, and succeeded about as far as could be hoped for a man carrying such armor and weaponry.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto was running out of questions to ask, and he wasn't much closer to figuring out the mystery behind Shōtei and the mysterious nightly reappearance of Kannonji Castle. There was one thing still bothering him, however: the mochi dish. Aotsuki had heard it mentioned more than once now, and had even seen the shadow of a yōkai carrying it away during his impromptu sojourn into the castle. What significance could it hold?
With the aid of Shigeaki Fujino, a group consisting of Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, and Maxim arrived in Takayama Tomoteru's room at Owari Castle just in time to interrupt a strategic meeting between Takenaka Hanbei and Hashinara Yoshitakatomo. There had been whispers of a great meeting between the Hashinara Clan's top generals for some time now, especially with Maxim's sudden return from Gehenna. Fujino had taken it upon herself to make it happen, and so it was. Abe no Seimei offered some brief telepathic objections at the stealing away of Aotsuki, but he was able to reassure her, and the meeting could begin.
Lord Maxim's initial refusal to go to war on the side of the Takeda surprised Takenaka Hanbei. She voiced as much, suggesting that it was strange he would not want to wage battle against a god, particularly one he had as much to begrudge as Bishamonten. Maxim soon clarified that he would be willing to lend his aid in the coming battle, but it was a risk almost on par with what he had encountered in the Palace of the Firebird. As such, he needed more payment than just honor and good service to make it worth risking his men. In exchange for a large number of souls, quality notwithstanding, he would agree fight both the Uesugi and Izanami.
The summoning of Shax completed, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and her* generals, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Maxim, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke, were all left in the basement of Ōtsu Castle, Abe no Seimei’s sanctum. Their new, demonic guest was now under control, and so they were free to pursue other matters. A few things in particular seemed to be on Sanosuke’s mind, and he began by pursuing the idea of a sheele.
It was just after midnight in the basements of Ōtsu Castle and many a scattered gathering was coming to an end. Knight Commander Maxim, who had just been blessed with a new sheele, thanked Abe no Seimei before returning to the main sanctum. There, he introduced Evaine to Aotsuki Tsukamoto and company as his squire. What followed was a minor spectacle as Kagami wondered secretly why she was so small in comparison to Evaine, Tama, and even Rasaimoku. Aotsuki tried to explain that the reason was in Maxim's own bigness. It was only reasonable that he'd have a big sheele to match. This, however, only led to the little mirror asking Maxim how he managed to grow so large.
It was damp and cold under a gibbous moon when Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, and Aotsuki Tsukamoto were brought by Shigeaki Fujino to the entrance of Isonokami Shrine. This small temple was nearly built into the hillside at the top of a forbidding climb many miles south of Wakigami. A stone arch led within, showing a dilapidated but relatively clear interior, lit by some unknown source. Indeed, it seemed as though someone had been here recently to tidy up. Unbeknownst to them, Matsumoto Ooawagaeri indeed had.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto had succeeded, to a certain degree, in his mission to safely escort his companions Ryūzaki Sanosuke and Hashinara Yoshitakatomo into the depths of Isonokami Shrine in search of an artifact. With the sword found, the dangers escaped, and a part of his soul dissolved by Tama's swearing, he was well and ready to go home. Shigeaki Fujino was happy to oblige, and soon he found himself in the moonlit entryway of Ōtsu Castle. A pair of guards welcomed him in, but as he crossed into the bleakly shadowed hall, he realized that they were not the only ones here.
Now that Shigeaki Fujino had transported herself away to a safe place, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, and Ryūzaki Sanosuke could battle the remaining Gye-lyong at their leisure. Those monstrous serpents were even now caught up in the coils of Yoshitakatomo's earthen magic, unable to move or raise their heads for the immense gravity pressing down on them. In such circumstances, it might not be necessary to fight at all. Such must have been the thoughts rushing through Sanosuke's head as he grabbed the stone ring that had fallen from the first Imugi's helmet and immediately made his way to the next closest.
In the dark of morning, Aotsuki Tsukamoto stood in his personal chambers, gazing down at his wife sleeping on the tatami floor, and wondered what kind of sick karma had led him to this point in his life. Along with the tea kettle apparently missing from the kitchens, someone had stolen the bedding from his room. From right under Tokku-hime, apparently without waking her up. Kagami's bed was also missing, although Tama's was, inexplicably, present. Exhausted, bewildered, and in no mood to deal with this, Aotsuki fell back on his most reliable ally. Abe no Seimei took the news of a thief in Ōtsu Castle calmly. To her mind, it must have been someone taking advantage of the chaos while Maximum Force partied, uninvited, in her sanctum. It had been a trying night for all of them.
Dawn rose on the third day of the Mōri Aspirant Tournament, with the matches beginning at their characteristically punctual break of dawn. Mostly familiar faces dotted the crowd, with some missing and a few newcomers present. Of particular interest was a sour-faced, dour woman in reddish robes sharing the box right beside Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki who hadn't been there on days previous. A fair number of other events occurred simultaneously with the matches, but for details on each battle that took place, see: Mōri Matches: Day 3
It was yet fairly early in the morning when those premier generals of the Hashinara Clan arrived at the doors of Yakisoba Yashiki. A heavy rain had begun to fall on their short journey over, clouds blotting out the sun overhead and casting an eerie shadow below. This effect seemed perfect for the dark Western mansion that now loomed before them. While not unheard of in international ports such as Shimonoseki, architecture like this was still very rare in Japan. The pervading feeling of the unnatural, the out of place, was only heightened by the glowing lights behind the mansion's crimson curtains and the infrequent flashes of lightning above. A sign just to the left of the door, obviously added as an afterthought, read: "焼きそば屋敷"
The Hashinara generals' misadventures at Yakisoba Yashiki proved to be quite taxing for Golden Boy Aotsuki Tsukamoto. Indeed, he had apparently at one point all but been killed by a tree. He couldn't remember it himself, but that wasn't the sort of thing that could just be dismissed. Now, at least, he was free to pursue some personal business. The morning matches had ended, which meant that fellow general Fubuki no longer required Kintoki's Hatchet. That weapon was the last puzzle piece in Aotsuki's plan to trade Musashibō Benkei for Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi. If he could achieve that, he'd finally have Mirror, Jewel, and Sword; the three Imperial Regalia of Japan. Fubuki and Maxim seemed to be heading for the nearby arena anyway, so Aotsuki accompanied them that far.
With all three pieces of the Imperial Regalia in hand and the blessed light of Amaterasu at his back, Aotsuki Tsukamoto returned to at Enryaku-ji where Hizashi awaited him. The current Herald of the Sun had requested that the other cardinal generals all be present as well. While neither Aotsuki nor the others quite understood why, they all accompanied him to delve once again into that painting which hung on the temple wall.
Once Saitō Dōsan's concerns had been aired and the clan's next step determined, Daimyō Aotsuki Tsukamoto had some other business to speak with his aides on before heading to Owari Castle. First, he wanted to know, what had become of Shōjo? The events of last night, bizarre as they were, had left him with an interest in the girl's condition. Unfortunately, there was little to tell. Abe no Seimei reported that the girl was still asleep, if her condition could be called that. The guards were under strict orders to notify her as soon as their ward awoke. Apparently, Aotsuki had been hoping that Shōta might pick his sister up at some point in the near future. The boy's death and subsequent possession by Dōhan pretty well put a stopper on that. Seimei hadn't been aware of this particular series of events, but as it didn't seem to relate much to the Aotsuki clan beyond their guest, she also did not express much interest. Their father was known to be within a prison in Yamashiro Province, she opined, if Aotsuki would rather leave Shōjo in his care.
Once he'd finished hashing out the details with Hayashi Hidesada on her mission to hunt down Ikkyū, Aotsuki Tsukamoto and company opted to accompany her to Inabayama Castle, where she'd begin immediately. Shigeaki Fujino facilitated their travel to Mino Province and also informed Aotsuki that there was someone already waiting for him in the castle's entry chamber. Indeed, shirtless and magnificent, "Master" wasted no time in approaching the young Daimyō as he apparated into the hall.
There on the coast of the Isle of Oriab, now-undead Hashinara Yoshitakatomo finished reminiscing over the strange series of events which had led her* to this point. She* and her* companions Hosokawa Gracia and Matsumoto Hiei had already noticed the Black Galleon Slavers on the other side of the ridge, going about their horrid business unaware that their doom gazed upon them from not a hundred feet away. The odious Men of Leng had more than a few things in their possession to interest the Princess-Daimyō. Foremost among these was the Gug, a monstrous four-limbed titan bound by chains and a queer symbol carved into the metal plate bound around its neck. Further off, something in a wooden cage flitted around agitatedly right next to two rows of enslaved Baharnans. That last became a political issue the moment Matsumoto Ooawagaeri, in his guise as Fubuki, arrived with Sothy and her stranded fellows. It was finally time to fulfill the promise of bringing them back to Baharna, but the presence of these captives complicated matters. Fortunately, with the arrival of a host including Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Ka-ten Agni, Alice of Hearts, Aka no Kitsunebi, Taira no Tokuko, and finally two representatives, Sasaki Kojirō and Oyama Hikari from the Silver Meteor Storm, the Hashinara were well-equipped to face anything that the Slavers might bring against them.
It had been some time since he last dealt with the complaints of Matsuno Takushi, but Aotsuki Tsukamoto had not forgotten his duty to resolve the fisherman's latest dispute. Previously, he'd visited Hiyoshi Onsen, a hot spring run by a Saru cabal of the same name. It was Takushi's contention that the hot water from that spring had changed the currents in Lake Biwa, altering the ecosystem and making his fishing trade far less viable. Upon spending a relaxing hour at the springs with his wife, however, Aotsuki had discovered another potential explanation for Takushi's unease. In the women's bath, Tokku-hime socialized with a woman who claimed to be Takushi's wife. Apparently she visited the onsen on a regular basis. With his keen insight into the hearts of men, Aotsuki picked up that there may be more of a marital than market side to this conflict.
While everyone took some time to secure the prisoners and recover from their recent battle with the Black Galleon Slavers and their captive Gug, Fubuki set about preparing the floundering Black Galleon for sail. This was not her* first dealing with such a vessel, as another served as Fubuki's flying transport back in the waking world. A bit of magic was enough to patch up the hull and, together with Taira no Tokuko and Aka no Kitsunebi, the Matsumoto gang was able to safely take the remaining frozen slavers prisoner. Fubuki thought to ask Sothy what should be done with them and received in reply that the Chieftan of Baharna would decide their fate. It was to be expected, however, that they would be thrown to the Wamps. A quick chat with the refugee Baharnans discovered that they were both skilled enough and willing to crew a Black Galleon, navigating it through familiar waters back to their home port. As a final thought, Fubuki reached out across the realms to Tsukijō Hanahane. His flamboyance was still well awake, and suggested that he'd not be retiring for many hours yet. That meant that they couldn't count on Jericho Petalwing's patronage anytime soon. Fubuki did learn, at least, that dropping the Petalwing name might earn them a bit of pull in Baharna.
When Ryūzaki Sanosuke and his dinner companions, Aoki Michiko and Shigeaki Fujino arrived at the door of Yakisoba Yashiki, they found the final member of their party already waiting for them. With her long black hair, slender build, eccentric jewelry, and fine yukata open lazily to reveal smallclothes beneath, this could only be Shigeaki Tōno. Sanosuke seemed to appreciate the view, and not just of Fujino's aunt. Yakisoba Yashiki felt like a different place with the sun shining merrily over green grass below.
Under the escort of Steersman Leaf's longship, the Hashinara Clan's temporary Baharnan crew finally pulled their stolen Black Galleon into the great port of Baharna. While the surrounding cluster of clay and stone houses was certainly more a city than a town, all of Baharna's activity seemed to be concentrated around the docks. Several other vessels were already settled here and a variety of exotic-looking goods were being peddled right at the water's edge. Some distance above them, a mighty spyglass, easily the size of an average house, stared down at them like an enormous glass eye.
With their business concluded at the port, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, Fubuki, and their retinue were led, as promised, to lodgings prepared for them in the heart of Baharna. This building, unnervingly named "The Thing in the Attic" proved to be a repurposed tavern. A small suite of rooms in the back provided almost, but not quite, enough room for each of their companions to have their own bed.
As the group led by Hashinara Yoshitakatomo left the Baharnan Library, they were cautioned first by Chhean the Curator not to take any books off the premises. That put an end to Fubuki's study of the Baharnan language, but she* had established a small foundational vocabulary by that point. Aotsuki Tsukamoto had his own reservations in leaving as well. He'd seen Oyama Hikari eyeing that Only Accurate Map of the Dreamlands so tantalizingly displayed in the center of the hall. So far he'd been able to deflect any thefts, but Aotsuki eventually decided that if Hikari wanted to tangle with Chhean and the fierce-looking Dragon skeleton under her contol, that was their business. Leaving that towering canyon of books behind them, the three set off on the short road to the Ruins of Tyrhhia.
In the port of Baharna, young lord Aotsuki Tsukamoto watched Fubuki depart with Jorani the Whitesmith. They still had to return to The Thing in the Attic to deliver the other Wamp corpses, but for now it seemed they had some time to spare while their ally attended a lesson in smithing. No sooner had Fubuki passed from sight than Aotsuki received a mental message from Abe no Seimei. Even telepathically her voice sounded strained, as though she was about to deliver bad news.
With their three trophies piled into a cart, pulled by the ever-helpful Sable Fox, the team led by Hashinara Yoshitakatomo made their way back to Baharna. Their path took them along the side of Lake Yath. On the trip to Tyrhhia, this had been a fairly unremarkable walk. On this return trip, however, they had company to entertain them.
Things in the Earthrealm seemed to have settled down. At least, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo could no longer sense such a powerful disturbance through her* avatars. Aotsuki Tsukamoto remained eager to return to his lands, and Fubuki was just returning from her* smithing lesson with Jorani the Whitesmith. There was little now to keep those generals of the Hashinara from making their way back to The Thing in the Attic. There, Kravann awaited their last delivery of Wamp hides. Fubuki sent telepathic word ahead, asking Taira no Tokuko to inform the merchant that they were on their way.
On the deck of their artificially-sunken ship, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo and Fubuki looked across the bridged abyss at the treasure which had brought them there. Soon joined by Aotsuki Tsukamoto, the three pondered just how they were going to plunder that opulent chest. Fubuki's magic had created an air bubble within which to act even this far below the sea. And yet, the bounds of that same bubble seemed much more narrow than when they'd descended. Perhaps it was the water pressure this deep, or perhaps it was the work of something more sinister.
Not far from the coast of Oriab, traveling upon the Dreamsea, the Hashinara Clan's Black Galleon had just unwittingly brought another soul on board. Perhaps not completely unwittingly. It was a fair educated guess, based on the aura of Sin magic surrounding it, that the bottle Oyama Hikari retrieved from The Sunken City contained a Demon. That didn't stop the little treasure hunter from popping it open and letting the thing loose. Coalescing forth from a cloud of heady, pinkish mist, this demon was quite unlike any they'd encountered before. With smooth skin and a slender, feminine frame, she would have passed for human if not for the purple tinge of her skin and the ten thick tentacles that constituted her body from the waist down. The demoness didn't seem hostile, at least not immediately. Instead, she appeared overjoyed. With a triumphant shout in the language of fiends (Hebrew?), she beamed at the assembled crew around her, gaze lingering on each in turn. Fubuki, who had made something of a study of demonic languages recently, caught something about "finally being free."
The revelation that Hashinara Yoshitakatomo would be staying in the Dreamlands was a sobering one, but not entirely unexpected. Hosokawa Gracia and the dangerous newcomer, Carmilla, would remain with her* on Oriab. That left Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Matsumoto Ooawagaeri to guide the other members of their crew back to Earth safely. There wasn't anything but fifty feet of open coast between them and the portal now. And yet... Every time they'd drawn close to returning so far, something had happened to delay them. Aotsuki felt a dark foreboding about what tiny slice remained of their journey. Perhaps Fubuki felt it too, for she* wove the water under her* command into a swirling tunnel, connecting the bow of the Black Galleon directly to the portal. Together with their companions, the Black Blade and Golden Arm proceeded homeward...
The hour had grown late indeed, yet Aotsuki Tsukamoto still felt he had very much left to do. With Fubuki and her* troublesome passengers gone, that left he and Abe no Seimei alone in an empty corridor of Ōtsu Castle. Only Aotsuki's glowing golden arm lit the darkness around them. It was an unconventional location for a meeting with his adviser, but perhaps he was wise to take the opportunity before some new chaos unveiled itself. First, Aotsuki asked about their guest from Kannonji Castle: one Rokkaku no Jakusai. According to Seimei's report, Jakusai had awoken around nightfall as they expected. She kept all memory of their interactions the previous moon, and seemed to exhibit no indication that anything was out of the ordinary. That was much as Aotsuki expected, yet was no help at all in unraveling the One-Night Castle's mystery. Seimei pointed out that perhaps the "Buddha" they'd heard mentioned was the key to all this. If they were to find whomever that was, everything else should fall into place. Aotsuki agreed that this may well be their logical next step before changing the topic.
It hadn't been easy, but Aotsuki Tsukamoto had come up with a way to deal with Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A way that they could both agree on. That is, dumping him somewhere far away. Hideyoshi wanted a fresh start, and Aotsuki wanted to be rid of him. It almost seemed to mirror how the young Daimyō's adviser, Abe no Seimei was to deal with her nemesis, Ashiya Dōman: shove him in the Dreamlands and forget about him. That matter was resolved, but Aotsuki still had many more items on his plate despite the late hour. It had been an eventful day, and catching up with those events had proved challenging. Next, he'd like to speak to Saika Magoichi. The Silver Crow's team had succeeded in bringing in Hideyoshi, and so Seimei had given them time off. But this was important. Aotsuki bade that Magoichi, at least, be woken up for a short meeting.
It was the darkest hour of the night; the perfect time for ninja business. It was just such ninja business which drew the five Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan to Iga. For some time, Fujibayashi Nagato had been working here to eliminate the remnants of the resistance group known as Igamono. With them out of the way, and Hattori Hanzō dead, there would be nothing standing in the way of Nagato becoming head Jōnin of the Iga Ninja. Her first order of business promised to be a formal alliance with the Hashinara Clan. Therefore, it behooved the clan to lend their aid in this final confrontation. The Igamono, staunch traditional independents, would never allow the Iga Ninja to formally ally with a clan. They were a minority now, but enough families still backed them that they could prove a threat if left alone. One such family, led by Iganozeki Butsugai, had agreed to speak with Nagato tonight. Canny and with plenty of shinobi experience to draw upon, she expected a trap. Therefore, having five of the most powerful individuals in Japan at her back was a great reassurance.
Aotsuki Tsukamoto opened his eyes. Apparently, after that misguided meeting with Saika Magoichi, he'd fallen asleep on the floor of the meeting room. It wasn't a great surprise. As his mastery over his body grew, he physically needed little sleep these days, but mental exhaustion was another matter entirely. It had been a strenuous few days. Of that, at least, there was no room for doubt. But what had woken him up. Looking about the well-lit room, he realized with a start that his three Sheele were all missing. Aotsuki's heart jumped up into his throat. Unlike some sheele, their bond was so close that his soul companions literally could not survive away from his presence. The lamp in the room had burnt out, so the light Aotsuki was searching with... It was coming from something on a nearby shelf.
Now that his newest guest had been settled in, Lord Aotsuki Tsukamoto opted to use what remained of the night to meet with his wife. Their shared chambers seemed slept in, but were empty when he arrived at them. Curious, Aotsuki followed a low sound and soft light down the halls to Ōtsu Castle's main meeting chamber. His wife was inside. Aotsuki could hear Tokku-hime's voice, but he wasn't able to place just who she was speaking to. He could have stood outside the door and eavesdropped, but what kind of husband and lord would do that in his own castle? Aotsuki slid the door and stepped inside.
Starting with the dawn, the Mōri Martial Arts Tournament once again saw a fine turnout from all across the land. Either all these generals had some manner of quick transportation, comparable to the Hashinara Clan's teleportation network, or they were staying in Shimonoseki for the duration. Perhaps a combination of both. The morning proceeded with a series of intense fights and only a single death. Once all was done, Fubuki, Honda Tadakatsu, Maxim, and Momo would be advancing to the independent semifinals. Accounts of their matches can be found elsewhere. During and after the bouts, however, a few other events of interest were happening throughout the crowd.
With the morning's matches already concluded, Aotsuki Tsukamoto found himself with some free time on his hands. Later, he and Saitō Dōsan had a meeting with Maxim and his new friend Nagasone Kotetsu. For the moment, that foreign knight seemed to be wrapped up in some strange business with the Hōjō Clan, however. There was also the matter of these strange mochi-like beings crowding around his legs, but Aotsuki knew a non-problem when he saw one. Any plans the young Daimyō might have made were cut short, however, by a strained message from Abe no Seimei. Her message was simple, yet urgent: Ikkyū had been captured. For such a kind and charming boy, Aotsuki had a lot of enemies, but Ikkyū was among the worst. He was immediately cautious. This seemed far too easy. Still, Hayashi Hidesada had called him through Seimei immediately after capturing the renegade monk. He couldn't just ignore it. With a quick explanation to Dōsan, Aotsuki hailed Shigeaki Fujino for immediate transport to Inabayama Castle. Fujino was happy to oblige, but their journey was not destined to go so smoothly...
Within the subterranean dungeons burrowed beneath Inabayama, young lord Aotsuki Tsukamoto faced a difficult prisoner. His name was Ikkyu. At least, that's what he insisted. Aotsuki knew Ikkyū well, however, and this aging, bald monk was not the same person. This, too, was a ruse; a decoy sent to throw himself upon Aotsuki's mercy. It seemed too obvious, though. Was this man really meant to take the fall for true Ikkyū's crimes, or was he merely a distraction...? Regardless, Aotsuki was now faced with what to do with the imposter. It was not difficult to believe that he had some knowledge of the true Ikkyū's whereabouts. Such information would be very valuable to Aotsuki and his clan, who still sought justice for the notorious monk's odious actions. Kuroda Kanbei, one of the few present and a trusted ally, suggested that they kill him. As a necromancer, Kanbei would have an easier time obtaining the information posthumously.
Okuni Priestess Placeholder (name by player) will join the Aotsuki Clan
In the winter sun, with the oven of the Black Toad Inn behind him, Greasy Ii began to sweat. He'd been completely unable to do anything about that ruffian (Maxim, was it?) throwing his weight around and trying to kidnap cute little Oyau. And now, when he'd gone as far as to throw himself upon the mercy of the Silver General, Ryūzaki Sanosuke, it seemed his plea had fallen on deaf ears.
It was time for the final match; that which would determine the victor of the clan portion of the Mōri Clan Tournament. The Hashinara Clan would be facing the Ryūzōji Clan and each of the Cardinal Generals had managed to make it to watch. All, that is, except Hashinara Yoshitakatomo. Instead, the Daimyō had a sobering announcement for her* generals.
At the sound and light, the gathered crowd looked as one to the center of the arena. There, under a fading shower of fireworks, stood an unfamiliar figure and The Black Blade of Doom: Date Masamune. They faced each other and seemed ready to battle. From the southeastern quadrant, a gasp rang out. It was Katakura Kojūrō. Neither she nor Masuda Kita seemed thrilled at the appearance of another Date Masamune. Indeed, there were some murmurs worming their way through the crowd. Wasn't Date Masamune dead, obliterated by Musashibō Benkei in the tournament? Mōri Motonari's voice cut through the muddle like a blade. She chided both the unknown figure and Masamune. There were no further fights scheduled that day and, what's more, their intrusion on the field when she was about to announce the champion's prize was far too presumptuous. At a swelling of support from the crowd, the two rivals backed down. They would have their battle after the ceremonies concluded.
As The White Blade of Hope: Date Masamune vanished from the arena, Aotsuki Tsukamoto breathed a sigh of relief. He was not to be afforded even a moment of peace, however, as his adviser Abe no Seimei hailed him on the mental network almost immediately after. She'd finished scouting a priestess for their new shrine to Ōkuninushi. Their most promising candidate was waiting on Aotsuki's pleasure back in Ōtsu Castle. Or, if he so wished, Seimei could take care of it herself. There was some business going on with a mission to the Dreamlands (again?). Perhaps attending to this newcomer himself would give Aotsuki time to decide who he wanted to dispatch on that.
While most of his allies did whatever they were off doing in the Dreamlands, Aotsuki Tsukamoto had important matters of his own to attend to. His adviser, Abe no Seimei, was able to direct him to the plans "Master" had laid out for a castle on the northern border of Mino Province. From there, he was only a short call to Shigeaki Fujino away from the proposed location.
In the northern reaches of Mino Province, young Daimyō Aotsuki Tsukamoto stood now before a hulking castle of pinkish hue. The result hadn't been exactly what he had in mind when he'd asked Alice of Hearts to create it. Still, the fortress seemed functional enough and Saitō Dōsan wasn't overly-concerned by its unique coloration. All that remained now, as Shigeaki Fujino reminded him, was to choose a name. Aotsuki thought on this for a short time, then came to an answer: Kaneyama Castle. Those few assembled murmured their approval. Directly translated, that would be something like "money mountain." An auspicious name that surely reflected the fortress' opulent design.
Leaving the mysterious iron-red key on his floor for the moment, Aotsuki Tsukamoto instead took his business to Owari Castle. It was the opinion of Saitō Dōsan that young Akechi Mitsutoshi would be the person to ask about all matters of demonology. Upon his arrival with Shigeaki Fujino, however, Aotsuki immediately discerned that something was wrong. It was far too quiet. Owari Castle's ramparts, which should have been manned at any hour in these turbulent times, were entirely bare. Only a single ashigaru guard stood at the steps leading to the castle's entrance. Though armed, he would prove no resistance at all to a dedicated invading force, or even a single powerful enemy general.
My lord, Aotsuki Tsukamoto, regards. You will likely discover this message in your quarters once you retire for the evening. Assuming, that is, that the troublesome yōkai I entrusted it to can accomplish this simple task. The contents herein are simply a collection of the reports your scouts in the Teisatsu Santai delivered earlier today. I thought that it may be of use to you to have easy access to this information in a single place, should it be required. Your loyal adviser, Abe no Seimei
Ah. A moment. Yes? You wish for a fuller account of the event which transpired this evening in the tombs beneath our castle? Very well. But know that I only speak of this because I hold no doubts as to your loyalty to the clan. Not a word must leave this room. The truth may damage our relations with powerful allies. Indeed, the remnants of the esteemed Minamoto Family.
After the eventful match between Maxim and Momo, yet before Mōri Motonari's Yashiki Summit, a small sliver of time was almost lost to the ages. Yet events did transpire during that sliver, and they are no less worthy of our attention. Let us consider them now...
As the meeting closed, Daimyō Mōri Clan chose to return to her own chambers with her meal for the time being. Perhaps she was cautious, given all that had transpired, or perhaps the sickness those putrid fumes had seeded in her was draining her strength once agian. "I must make some preparations for the final match," she instructed her ward, Fubuki, "So you are dismissed. I'd like you to remain close by if you can, however. Too many surprises have sprung today to not expect another." "Very well," Fubuki answered simply. There were other matters to attend to before her match with Maxim, but they might not take her so far away that it would become an issue. Indeed, it was only the width of a pane of glass away.
At the behest of Daimyō Mōri Motonari, many of the leaders from today's tournament arrived at Yakisoba Yashiki for lunch and a summit. Their topic of conversation was none other than the cataclysm which had broken the sky at the tournament but a few hours ago, and the creatures it had released into the world. Given that this was an event which could no doubt affect all of Japan, Motonari was disappointed to see how few leaders had opted to attend. Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the current Shogun, was at least in attendance, with her adviser Chitosemaru standing slyly behind her. Also present were Aotsuki Tsukamoto of the young Aotsuki Clan and the many other heads of the Hashinara hydra. Even Niiro Tadatsuru, Daimyō of the roguish Shimazu was lazily kicking her feet up on the table, with some manner of Wani whispering advice into her ear. No representatives of the Hōjō or Takeda arrived, however, and nor did anyone from the Alexandrian detachment visiting the city. It would have to do. As Hospodar Mikhail finished writing down their orders in his red velvet notebook and vanished to the kitchens, Motonari began the meeting.
After the Mōri Tournament finally concluded, the Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan found themselves pulled away for a spate of administrative tasks across their domains. It seemed as though an interminable time passed. Was it days? Weeks? Months? Half an entire year? No, it was but a single hour. At the end of such, each general received an urgent communication from Tōdaisen Nobuhara; a call for a meeting in person at Wakigami Castle. These events were growing less common as Shigeaki Fujino's mental network became more and more the norm for the Hashinara Clan. It followed, then, that whatever Nobuhara summoned them for was likely to be of great import.
It was past the sun's zenith on the first day of Metatron's reawakened sentience when he was approached by six humans of particular repute. Those named Ryūzaki Sanosuke and Aotsuki Tsukamoto bore the marks of lesser deities themselves. The others, Imamura Naiku, Mary Lyn, Takayama Ukon, and Takenaka Hanbei, were great in spirit or passion measured on the scale of mortals. Many had attempted to pass through to Samayim. Yet it was Metatron's role as Keeper of the Watch to bar all but the chosen few from entry. It was also his nature as the Burning Bush to speak. To convey the Almighty's word. Yet he had no voice in this form, in this purpose. The contradiction was its own torment.
Within the ruins of Sumiyoshi-taisha, Ryūzaki Sanosuke's eyes had well and truly glazed over as Metatron continued his endless lecture. "Ah yes, the sphere, or 'sephirot' as they are sometimes called. There are ten of them, as I mentioned, reaching from Keter, the crown, down to Malkuth, the earth. Indeed, I am a manifestation of these concepts myself, thus my appearance as a tree in this mortal world. It is not a shape I am bound to, but it is one in which I am most comfortable. Likewise, I sit on the Divine Council as representative for Keter, but in truth that set belongs to the Lord God. Just as I represent Him in speaking to you, I represent Him on the council. From the crown to the earth, I delivery heavenly knowledge. It is my duty and my joy to do so." Meanwhile, Aotsuki Tsukamoto was waiting patiently on the outskirts of Metatron's barrier. He looked up idly at the moth girl bumping her way across the unseen wall far above. Bonk. Bonk. He squinted as a small piece of light appeared to detach itself from the rift around it and began to descend toward him. He might not have seen it at all, had he not been looking up there already.
Certainly, there were other threats facing the Empire of Japan, yet none of them had the sheer immediacy and scale of those Angels who had descended and professed to pass judgment on humanity. With this in mind, Aotsuki Tsukamoto and Ryūzaki Sanosuke (perhaps for other reasons) assembled a small coalition of minds and muscle to make the journey to Samayim. There, they would meet with the Divine Council so that Aotsuki might argue their case. According to Ishim Ariel and Adriel, however, their path would not be without opposition from the forces of Geburah, the Arbiters. So it was that Amenotokotachi, Aoki Michiko, Haro Uin, Momose Nao, Mary Lyn, and Trivia accompanied their lords and angels guarding such into the rift of heaven.
Against the looming threat of the Unstoppable Holiday Force, Yukijirushi Santazaemon, the brave Cardinal Generals of the Hashinara Clan gathered up their presents and hopped on the Holiday Express heading north. Perhaps in the snowy fields of Hokkaido they could find some peace. But it was not to be. That monstrous champion of Oyamatsumi, Santazaemon, caught up with the speeding train and violently inserted himself into the last car. It was up to the Cardinal Generals and what allies they had been able to gather on such short notice to hold the monster off. If they could just survive until the Christmas Tree at the front of the train gathered enough Holiday Cheer... It was the last hope they had for a jolly Christmas.
