Imperial Marches

Structure

The Imperial Marches are vassals to the Reymal Emperor, and are represented to him as a confederation by their own elected leader, the March Herald. The March Herald rules from their election until their death. The March Herald exercises little control over the Marches except for presiding as chief justice and arbiter in the case of intermarch disputes that do not rise to the level of intermarch war, and as their chief war commandant, primarily defensively, but also in the rare case of a full March mobilization, as outlined in the terms of the Ausgleich.

Public Agenda

The Imperial Marches are a confederation of numerous primarily independent Marches that are vassals directly to the Reymal Emperor, and even then, mostly only in name. They pay no taxes, and serve instead to secure territory for the Reymal Empire, and act as auxiliary manpower for the Legions.

History

The Imperial Marches were established during the later years of the Great Northern Rebellion and the Temuj invasion in order to secure the vital strategic flanks of the Reymal Empire, and, less publicly, to prevent them from slipping out of the Empire's grasp as much of the North had. This lead to the Ausgleich of 23 Y.N., which guaranteed the nominal independence of and tax-free status of the marches, in exchange for guaranteeing the defense of large portions of the Reymal borders, which by then were shrinking with each passing month.
