The Mortal Realms

The Mortal Realms were created as part of the Second Work by The Gods of the Second Work, who drew materials from the six Elemental Realms to construct the Mortal Realm. After they were done, the influence of The Energy Planes created two parallel realms: Overrealm and Underrealm.

Nature of the Parallel Realms

The nature of the Mortal Realms and how they are connected to one another can be difficult for some to grasp. Despite the "Over" and "Under" prefixes of the parallel realms, they are actually located in the same place as Midrealm; this is what makes them "parallel". The nature of these parallel realms is somewhat like that of a distorted reflection. While Midrealm has a consistent flow of time, in which cause and effect are fixed and history is continuous, the parallel realms always reflect a distorted version of Midrealm at any given moment, rather than developing their own consistent history of events. For example, if a great kingdom were to collapse in Midrealm, it would do so in Overrealm and Underrealm as well, even if events as they were in those realms would not have led to such an outcome.   This pseudo-deterministic nature of the parallel realms is poorly understood even by experts. What exactly consittutes as "significant" so as to be replicated across the parallel realms has yet to be clearly determined. Natives of the parallel realms are Soul Reflections; reconstructions of the mortals of Midrealm influenced by the nature of the parallel realm. Artifacts and similar objects of significant are also reflected in these parallel realms.

Travel Between the Parallel Realms

Under normal circumstances, soul reflections cannot leave thier native realm. Contrariwise, creatures from other realms (typically mortals of Midrealm) can enter the parrellel realms and influence them as one would expect. However, the effects of what an outsider does only persist so long as an outsider maintains observation of the effected—that is to say, upon an outside party's leaving of the parrellel realm, the realm may revert to how it was before the outsider's arrival (or more accurately, change to reflect the current state of Midrealm).   At certain times of the year, in certain locations, the boundry between Midrealm and the parallel realms can weaken. This can lead to individuals being influenced by the increases amounts of vital or void energy (esspecially in the young and the unborn) and can even lead to inadvertent travel into one of the parallel realms.
