Similar to clans, the families of Ríocht na'Draíocht are a collection of extended families which all work together for a common goal. In the east, this doesn't just mean a particular family's wealth and power but also their arcane heritage which often spans multiple generations.

Structure

Most families within Ríocht na'Draíocht hold a similar structure to each other, though this isn't always the case. These families are lead by an ancestor in charge of several elders, usually behind the scenes, while the patriarch or matriarch is the public face of the family. Inside each family there are often smaller groups of direct relatives and branch families which compete with each other over power and influence within the family as a whole.

Public Agenda

Some families may focus on a specific school of magic such as Evocation or Illusion while others focus on creating powerful Artifacts through use of Enchantment and others still only seek to have the most powerful or most knowledgeable sorcerers in their ranks.

History

While it is unknown when the first family within the Fásach Draíocht came to be or who that family was, the practice of organizing themselves in this way is even older than the Magical Schools. Over the years many families have fallen from grace or were wiped from the pages of history, only to be replaced with others.

Territories

Each family owns a manor on their ancestral lands, usually with nearby towns and villages of commoners (those not versed in magic) which they allow to live under their protection in return for their service. Due to the danger in the wilderness of Fásach Draíocht most families are set up along the coast of the southern river and the inland sea, though a few powerful (or desperate) families do own fortified manors and castles within the dangerous wilderness instead. Out of necessity, neither situation leads to large holdings owned by any individual family.

Military

Each family can command a force of soldiers from the lands around them and often train such soldiers from the commoners to act as guards to their family, but under the command of the Ríocht na'Draíocht the family itself may have to send their most powerful sorcerers to lead these common soldiers into battle with especially powerful magical beasts or members of the other four nations.

Foreign Relations

Each family treats with each other in a different way even within Ríocht na'Draíocht, much less with how they deal with members of the other four nations. Some are hostile to everyone using others to achieve their own goals while others are isolationist and leave others alone so long as they're left alone. Usually, they're willing to trade but they keep tight guard over their secrets within ivory towers.

Education

Though most families send their children to the Magical Schools for an officially recognized education, much of the child's education is actually done before and after that time under the guidance of the family to pass down the arcane heritage of the family in question. Sorcerers are a studious lot, and as such spend most of their lives continually researching into the mysteries of the arcane even after they've completed any mandatory education.
