Jānnid Sultanate

The Jānnid Sultanate was a nation formed via rebellion. In the years leading up to its founding, and since the establishment of the Divine Empire of Edil, Genie slaves had become a major part of the army of Edil. However, over the years, their bindings began to weaken and were not renewed, setting the stage for a slave revolt, which was only waiting for a spark. The victory of this rebellion would see the establishment of the Sultanate, which was a short-lived attempt at bringing all three genie types together into one unified state.

History

In 1315, the armies of Edil numbered roughly 100,000, with genies making up nearly 10,000 of this number. This was considered a reasonable ratio to prevent genie rebellion, which was correct. However, the Edili did not bank on an invasion by the Uthmarid Empire of the Holy Successor, and certainly did not expect their army to, in the midst of battle, erupt into chaos when eight of the ten thousand genies broke their bindings at once and begin tearing into their forces. This created a violent, three-way battle in which most of the Edili army was wiped out. After the battle concluded, the genie forces retreated south towards the city of Edil, which they sacked entirely, killing or enslaving the entire population. Edil would then be turned into a genie city, with members of all three "tribes" of genie- the Ifrit, the Marids, and the Djinn forming a ruling regency council to determine who would be the sultan of this new state.

When Uthmarid* troops arrived, they were shocked to see the state of the capital, and negotiated with the genies to partition the Divine Empire between themselves. In this way, the Jānnid** Sultanate was legitmized, and gained the lands surrounding and south of Edil, including the modern city of Annišāḫūtu and much of the Ešērate of Aḫīalbu. The genies would begin exploiting this land, enslaving humans as revenge, and forcing them to work for them under very harsh conditions. This harsh treatment led to extreme unrest and pervasive revolts throughout the existence of Jānnid. Despite their legitimization as a power, and the constant revolts, which one would think would bring the genies together, Jānnid was extremely fractal, as the council could not come up with a sultan which would please all three factions. Escalating confict between the Ifrit and Marids by 1322 led to a Djinn-Marid alliance, and the Ifrits were driven from Edil and psuhed back into the desert. After this, the Djinn established a near-hegemony on power in the city as the Marids were too lazy to attend meetings of the council and therefore had no say in governing. Instead, they preferred to lie about in lakeside palaces built by their slaves. The Jānnid Sultanate was therefore entirely dependent on the Djinn, both to field an army and to govern, which, given there were only about 5,000 of them in the nation, was a precarious task.

With the Rise of (latter) Bāblus and their rebellion's success against the Uthmarids, the Jānnid Sultanate was in extreme distress, since Bāblus is quite close to Edil. Their fears would prove correct, as after liberating their immediate region, Bāblus turned on the Genies. Their invasion would last just a year, with Edil having been retaken and sacked for a second time in 1344, but pacification of rouge Marids and Djinn continued well into the 1360s.

*(though Uthmarid has marid within the name, they are not related in any way)

**Jānnid is simply the Al'salaanic word for genie, since the sultanate was recorded by the Uthmarids it bears this name. Its denizens simly referred to it as The Sultanate
