Proximal Generation Incorporated

Written by Colonel Vulpes

This is the future. We are the future. We are ProxGen.
— Derek Knight
Synopsis:

Proximal Generation Incorporated, better known as ProxGen, is arguably the largest corporation in the solar system as of 2267. Employing over 19 million people across the solar system and indirectly influencing 10 billion on a yearly basis, ProxGen holds almost as much authority and power as some old Terran governments. However, ProxGen is not known for being scrupulous and has a history of unsavory business practices. ProxGen has always denied inhumane treatment of workers, which is most likely true. However, if one was to look closer at the corporation's research history, they might find some suspicious projects. Whatever the truth is, Proximal Generation Incorporated is an immensely influential player in the workings of the Sol System.

Public Agenda

ProxGen's public agenda is to please their shareholders with significant profits every year, and the forward the progression of mankind throughout the Sol system. ProxGen has made substantial progress in many of the fields the corporation invested in, from genetic engineering to fusion propulsion and anything in between. Although ProxGen has given the Sol system several of the now commonplace technologies, the corporation has a less than stellar track record. Though no one has been able to prove it, ProxGen is suspected to have been involved in corporate espionage and unethical business processes, especially in their secret research division.

Assets

With an current annual revenue of over 68.31 trillion credit, and having held a profit of around 35 trillion credits for the last 20 years, it is safe to say that ProxGen has a substantial amount of monetary assets at their availability. However, the exact amount of money that ProxGen possesses is undisclosed, but is estimated to be between 100 and 250 trillion credits. This amount of monetary resources far outclasses their rival corporations.

ProxGen is also, through the many subsidiary companies under their umbrella, responsible for the construction of around 45% of starships in any given year. This is made possible through Sagan Station, the largest corporate space station in the solar system, which is located at the 2nd Lunar Lagrange point. Not only does ProxGen construct starships, the corporation also owns a large transportation and cargo fleet to affordably move their massive amounts of raw materials and personnel throughout the solar system.

These investments are protected by the ProxGen Security Force (PSF), which is known for being the most well-equipped and competent of any civilian defense service. The PSF supposably does follow all of the Tycho Treaty stipulations for a space-capable military force, but many of their weapons and tactics are just short of being illegal by most UN standards. They have been known to take extreme action against those who fail to comply with their orders. An example of such action was the Callisto Affair, a short firefight between a Belter mining vessel and 2 PSF crusiers that left 13 Belters dead, with no casualties to PSF. The PSF, and the fleet they operate, have the military capability of many former Terran countries and are considered by most to be the law of Jovian system.

History

Proximal Generation Incorporated was founded on April 6, 2047 by Derek Clint Knight as Proximal Generation Technologies. Proximal Generational Technologies produced a range of products that built off of the large companies of the time, such as Apple and Google, quickly becoming a major player in world trade. ProxGen invested heavily in technologies that many believed would not mature for several years, such as fusion for both power generation and propulsion as well as advanced genetic engineering. Although these investments did not pay off immediately, without ProxGen's investments few of these technologies would be were they are today.

By 2105 Proximal Generation Technologies was reorganized as Proximal Generation Incorporated through the acquisition of multiple other companies, such as Astra Shipbuilding and ExoVation Inc. In 2179 the ProxGen board of directors founded Omega Research for the continuation of their less savory research to be conducted off world. This lead to Omega Research constructing and manning of Quetzalcoatl Station, located at Jupiter's 5th Lagrange point by 2207.

Currently in 2267, ProxGen is the reigning corporation around Jupiter in addition to being one of the most influential companies in the entire solar system. With a yearly revenue of more than 68.31 trillion credits, ProxGen has successfully dominated the market of the solar system for almost a hundred years. Few companies remain unswayed by ProxGen's influence.

Military

ProxGen's largest investments are protected by the ProxGen Security Force, or PSF for short. PSF is made up of some of the best former soldiers and mercenaries in the solar system, as ProxGen can afford to pay its employees better than any military. These hired guns are equipped with armaments that is equivalent the UN Space Fleet Marines, if not illegal, and are deadly effective with them. Trained for combat in both zero-g and on planetary bodies, PSF soldiers are not to be taken lightly and are only deployed in the event of a serious threat to corporate property. The marine division of PSF currently employs around 15 thousand proficient individuals.

ProxGen Security Force also operates a substantial fleet, which is used to defend ProxGen stations and cargo ships throughout the solar system. The PSF fleet consists of 64 documented warships, ranging from the small Sparrowhawk-class patrol craft to large and heavily armed Diligence-class crusiers. These starships are constructed at ProxGen corporate stations, such as Sagan Construction Station, to avoid conflict with both UN and MC regulations.

Technological Level

ProxGen is renown for the amount of resources that it employs for the research of new technologies that the corporation says are for the good of humanity. ProxGen scientists are responsible for the elimination of COVID-19 and the creation of the genetically engineered plants that now grow on the surface of Mars. One of the most significant discoveries that ProxGen has shared with the solar system is that of the commercial fusion reactor. Without the fusion reactor, most of the progress that has been made in the last 150 years would not have happened.

It is estimated that ProxGen will have spent 1.21 trillion on research in 2267, with the more significant amount of those resources going to the Quetzalcoatl Research Station. This investment in many fields of science has brought substantial profit to ProxGen, but more recently has allowed the PSF to be equipped with anti-pirate weapons on par with the UNSF. A fact that has some politicians worried, well, those not on ProxGen's bankroll.

Infrastructure

The largest of ProxGen's orbital facilities is the Sagan Construction Station orbiting Luna in its L2 point. Besides Sagan Construction Station, ProxGen additionally owns the following orbital facilities:

  1. Tyson Station - Located in Medium Earth Orbit
  2. New Terra - Located in Terra's L5 Point
  3. UNSF Construction Stations A-E - Located in Geosynchronous Earth Orbit
  4. Jovian Colonies & Gas Harvesting Facilities - Located over Jupiter and on its moon, Callisto
  5. Marathon Station - Located over Ceres in the Belt
  6. Quetzalcoatl Research Station - Exact location unknown. Somewhere in Jupiter's L5 Point

Orbital stations aside, ProxGen also owns the mining facilities and mineral depots at Artemis on Luna. This location is ProxGen's largest source of raw materials, accounting for 68% of the resources used in their starship construction, with the rest being mined off Ceres or being bought from miners in the Belt.
