Human

Written by Colonel Vulpes

Humans are by far the most widespread and technologically advanced species in the Sol System, with the current population sitting at around 17.334 billion. The human species is extremely diverse and actually quite compassionate, especially for a species descending from predators. While it would be a mistake to say that all humans care more about just themselves, humanity has proven to be a resourceful and like-minded species. If they can refrain from killing each other for various reasons or pursuing knowledge that they are not yet ready for, the human species is likely to expand beyond the Sol System.

For more detailed information on the human species, the following Net source is recommended:

There are a few specific ethnicities that have formed among humans that hail from the same locations. A quick list has been provided to avoid confusion:

Venus: (Capital: Aurora)

  • Venusian- Although not always, most Venusians are quite wealthy and consider themselves above the petty politics of the rest of the Sol System. Most Venusians are content with Terra and Mars fighting with each, as long as it does not involve them. As Venus has not be terraformed, all farms, towns, and cities on Venus actually float at 55 kilometers above the surface. At 55 kilometers, breathable air is buoyant enough to hold the ultralight cites aloft and the amount of atmosphere above them protects the inhabitants from solar radiation.

Terra, formerly known as Earth: (Capital: Upper New York City)

  • Terran- With well over 13 billion people on Terra, Terrans make up the majority of the human species. Terra is also the most diverse of any of the planets in terms of population. However supporting this many people comes at a severe cost on the planet's ecosystem. In the late 21st century, most the planet was at risk of being inhabitable. Although mitigated now, Terra is still sparse in resources and there is a significant wealth gap among its inhabitants. Massive cities sprawl across much of the surface, some offshore cities have been constructed in countries pressed for land, and in the most populous of cities an Upper section has been built upon the original Lower section.

Luna: (Capital: Artemis)

  • Lunar- The Lunar people are quite industrious and are responsible for the mining of many of the essential resources sent to Terra. Luna, and its people, are under United Nations jurisdiction as a colony; something that does not bother most Lunars, however some have begun to resist the UN oversight. There is a significant population of Belters that live on Luna, as they find the lower gravity much easier to live in compared to Terra. Luna is also home to many orbital construction facilities as the Lagrange points between Terra and Luna are the ideal place to send the large amounts of materials required to construct spacecraft.

Mars: (Capital: Olympus)

  • Martian- Martians are the second most populous ethnicity in the Sol System. Being the oldest colonized planet besides Terra, Mars supports a population of just under 3.5 billion. There are many small settlements scattered across the surface of the planet, but many of the largest cities are constructed below the surface due to the solar radiation present. Although there are plans to terraform Mars through the use of comets and a large magnetic shield, the government has been unsuccessful in this endeavor. Mars, governed by the Martian Confederacy, commands a large and well equipped navy. The MC has labeled the navy as a necessity, as Terra has continued to maintain a navy just as large.

Ceres and the Belt: (Capital: N/A)

  • Belter- The most independent of all of the different ethnicities, Belters are made up of a conglomerate of private and corporate employees that live within the asteroid belt. Most Belters have live their entire lives in space, never setting foot on a planet. As of such, most Belters are extremely thin and unable to within much more than 30% of Terra's gravity without training or support.
  • Ceres is a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt and is an essential part of life in the belt, as it provides the Belter ships with fuel, food, and water. The surface of Ceres is not permanently inhabited, rather, a massive modular colony has been constructed from materials lifted from its surface. The colony resembles the few O'Neill cylinders that orbit Terra, but are much larger and are connected to gigantic focusing mirrors responsible for the redirecting of sunlight into the cylinders. Ceres Station is by far the largest single thing that humanity has constructed in space, with 2.58 million people currently calling it home. The Skulk, Sol System's largest organized criminal enterprise, is also based on Ceres Station and thrives in the more lawless sections of the station.

Jupiter: (Capital: Frontier, located on Callisto)

  • Jupiter and its moons, together known as the Jovian system, mark the newest colonization attempt by humanity. Permanent human settlements have been in the Jovian system for only about 60 years, therefore it has not long enough to give the colonists a distinctive identity. Those that call the Jovian system their home are descendants of Terrans, Martians, and Belters combined. The Jovian system is also the fastest growing population in the Sol System, besides Terra. The reason behind this growth is because of the expansion of ProxGen Inc., as the hydrogen and helium being mined from Jupiter's atmosphere is worth a pretty penny when sold as fuel. Employing a quarter of the population of the system and maintaining 90% of the orbital facilities, ProxGen's presence in the Jovian system is felt heavily, so much so that the ProxGen Security Forces are considered by most to be the law.

Saturn: (Capital: Athena Station)

  • Orbital Facilities around Saturn- Although not a true colony, the orbital stations around Saturn are home to the United Federation of Scientists. After the UFS sold the rights of the Daedalus engine in 2130 and the UN v. MC cold war started, the organization decided it would be in their best interest to relocate somewhere that politics would not effect them and a where they could continue research into all fields of science for the benefit of humanity. This lead the Federation of Scientists to construct multiple spin stations around Saturn and a small colony on the surface of Titan, Saturn's largest moon. The current population of scientists, their families, and other auxiliary personnel is around 125 thousand.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Humans are the predominant species in the Sol System, as well as being the only known sapient species in existence. The human species claims Terra as their planet of origin, but have since spread to many of the planetary bodies through the Sol System. The current human population in the Sol System is around 17.334 billion.

Population of Planetary Bodies:
  • Venus & Orbiting Facilities: 1.22 million
  • Terra & Orbiting Facilities: 13.84 billion
  • Luna & Orbiting Facilities: 18.21 million
  • Mars & Orbiting Facilities: 3.47 billion
  • The Belt: Estimated around 1 million
  • Ceres Station: 2.58 million
  • Jupiter, Moons, and Orbiting Facilities: 1.17 million
  • Orbiting Facilities around Saturn: .125 million

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

As the only sapient species within the Sol System, humans tend to see themselves as over all other species that they have brought with them from Terra. This is not to say that humans are xenophobic, nor that they fail to treat the other species with respect. However, it is simply that humans have yet to encounter another species that they have felt the need to give the same rights as a person. Laws are in place to provide another species with the rights of a person if a certain level of sapience is achieved, believed by most to be enacted in the event of First Contact, but one can't help wondering if humanity is missing something placed right before them.
