Quetzalcoatl Research Station

Written by Colonel Vulpes

Synopsis:

Quetzalcoatl Research Station is a large dual ringed spin station owned by Proximal Generation Incorporated. Quetzalcoatl Station is located within Jupiter's fifth Lagrange point, or L5 for short. The station consists of two counter-rotating rings, each with a radius of 250 meters rotating at 1.891 RPM to simulate 1 g of gravity, and a central spine, measuring 135 meters sans antennas, around which the rings rotate. This makes the station quite large for a private corporation, yet it is still small when compared to other stations owned by ProxGen, such as Sagan Construction Station in orbit around Luna.

Quetzalcoatl Research Station is the location of ProxGen's most secretive, and frequently less than legal, research is conducted. The station employs several of the most brilliant people in the solar system, rivaling Terran Universities and Martian Engineering Schools in aptitude and ingenuity, as ProxGen is extremely precise with the people and projects it funds. It is rumored that some of the scientists onboard Quetzalcoatl station have been augmented with computers and other implants to increase productivity and focus. Whispers of horrendous failed experiments taking place on the station are also common throughout the Belt, However, none of those claims have never been proven, as the UN has reviewed the station multiple times, without finding a shred of evidence.

Current Projects: For ProxGen Employee Eyes only - Security Clearance Needed
Clearance Level One
No current projects underway, as the new fusion fuel pellet design has already be cleared for general production.
Clearance Level Two
  • Graphene Capabilities, focus on biointegration potential.
  • Spike Drive Research.
  • Project Plate: 3D-printed super alloys: Composed of primarily titanium, niobium, nickel, and slight amounts of platinum.
Clearance Level Three
Project Anvil: High Velocity Railgun, with CerMet (Ceramic Metal) composite rails.
Clearance Level Four
  • Project Midnight: Study of dark matter, and possible applications.
  • Project Undying Light: Applications of antimatter, specifically for torch engines.
  • Project Evergreen: Modified super-crops for growth on space stations. (Increased nutritional value and integration into station waste control systems.)
  • Project Imhotep: Construction Nano-bots, potential uses for starship repair and colony construction.
  • Project ATLAS: Advanced Textiles for Land based Armor systems and Spacesuits.
Clearance Level Five
Project Starlight: Integration of Sapient Computational Systems into Starship Applications.
Researchers have begun integration of Subjects 1-Dn through 8-Do into the prototype brain-computer interfaces. The project has proceeded on schedule and the subjects are verifiably sapient, however the implants for limiting feeling and emotion are still temperamental.

Demographics

The total crew of Quetzalcoatl station is 150 permanent residents, with occasional visitors under certain circumstances, such as visiting members of the ProxGen board of directors or during exchanging of PSF squads. The 150 personnel is divided into the following categories:

  • 100 Scientists
  • 18 PSF Personnel
  • 12 Engineering and Maintenance Staff
  • 10 Research Specialists
  • 6 Health/Janitorial Service Members
  • 4 Administration Officers

Defences

Equipped with 8 turret mounted M65 20mm General Dynamics point defense cannons, Quetzalcoatl Station has sufficient firepower to deter pirates or nosey civilians from getting close to the station. Supposing that the station is breached by a boarding party or in the event of an escaped subject, the station has two squads of ProxGen Security Force personnel onboard at all times. Each squad of 9 consists of two firing groups over seen by a squad leader, each firing group is made up of 4 personnel. The station is also defended by a large contingency of starships from the PSF fleet, with the total amount of ships defending the station usually over 8. Although that many armed starships may seem excessive to most, ProxGen is not taking any risks with their largest investment of research.

Districts

Located within Ring 1 are the laboratories, test facilities, fabrication units, and supercomputer/AI stations, along with secondary life support systems for redundancy. The laboratories themselves are split into wings that are specifically equipped for the field that is conducting research in that wing. The current wings are:

  1. Genetic Engineering
  2. Biotechnology
  3. Nanotechnology
  4. Fusion Efficiency Testing
  5. Exotic Matter & Antimatter Studies
  6. Advanced Weapons

Ring 2 contains the living quarters for the crew, a small recreation area, main life support systems, thermal control surfaces, and the communication suite. The rings are each connected to the central spine of the station by three attachment pylons equipped with power cables and elevators to better facilitate transportation between the rings and the spine. Located within the zero-g environment of the spine, is the central fusion reactor, complete with fuel tanks and shielding, the docking module, communication antennas, and the command deck.

History

Constructed by ProxGen over the course of six years, Quetzalcoatl Research Station was completed on January 16, 2207 and began its full operation by 2212. As a research station, Quetzalcoatl Station is the location at which many of ProxGen's most valuable discoveries have been made. This included the fabrication of the COVID-19 permanent vaccine in 2216, the testing of the PXG-05 tokamak fusion reactor in 2234, and the creation of the ansible, a superluminal communication device utilizing quantum entanglement, in 2253. The most of the current projects that are being conducted onboard are classified as Top Secret with Level 4 security clearance needed to view.
