Black Dog
Alternatively rumored to be the Fenrir wolf, a ghost, or the devil in the form of a huge black hound with a red eye in the center of its forehead, the Horror known as the Black Dog is known to patrol the area surrounding the Painted Mountain Safehouse 07. This ghostly specter is the size of a horse, and distorts the area when on the hunt, turning the area into a maze of twisted trees, roads to nowhere, or hallways that turn in on themselves. His howl is said to freeze your blood or signal your doom. The Black Dog might be able to become invisible or walk around with the sound of rattling chains. Some stories say that the Black Dog is unable to cross rivers or a threshold uninvited, and if you are ever struck by its paw, the wound will never heal.
Historical Basis
He takes the form of a huge black dog, and prowls along dark lanes and lonesome field footpaths, where, although his howling makes the hearer's blood run cold, his footfalls make no sound. You may know him at once, should you see him, by his fiery eye; he has but one, and that, like the Cyclops', is in the middle of his head. But such an encounter might bring you the worst of luck: it is even said that to meet him is to be warned that your death will occur before the end of the year. So you will do well to shut your eyes if you hear him howling; shut them even if you are uncertain whether it is the dog fiend or the voice of the wind you hear. Should you never set eyes on our Black Devil you may perhaps doubt his existence, and, like other learned folks, tell us that his story is nothing but the old myth of the black hound of Odin, but witness my truth, for I have seen it and my days are numbered. - Furyian Raider
This black dog, or the devil in such a likeness, running all along down the body of the caravan with great swiftness, and incredible haste, among the people, in a visible form and shape, passed between two persons, as they were kneeling upon their knees, and occupied in repair as it seemed, wrung the necks of them both at one instant clean backward, insomuch that even at a moment where they kneeled, they strangely died. - Furyian Raider
William Hone, an orc Gatewarden and Hermetic wizard, attempted to summon and confront the Black Dog with his ritual magic in the ruins of a limestone quarry, but his lifeless body was discovered soon afterward, an enormous animal's bite over his heart.
Spread
Although the Black Dog is mostly a tale told only by the Furyians, some Gatewardens have seen an enormous black shadow following their trucks while on patrol.
Variations & Mutation
Alternatively known as "Black Hound", "Black Fiend", "Old Shuck", or "The Beast of the Crossroads", the Black Dog has been encountered on the road to the Dog House. Some stories say that the Black Dog is Fenrir himself having been released at the end of the world or even Fenrir's ghost. Other versions call the Black Hound a devil or a barghest from northern England.
