Solar Pulse

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
Nuclear energy drums through the Chained Sun. It swells and bubbles, until it lashes out towards space. Each pulse is a wave of radioactivity that tears through the Sol system. Should it collide with a planet's magnetic field, it will flare up auroras and potentially cause geomagnetic storms and electrical blackouts. At the height of the solar cycle, the Sun can produce several solar pulses in a day, while at its slowest it can take days or even weeks.   Warnings are sent out over SWAN when a solar pulse is imminent. Spacecrafts are asked to recall crew out on EVA and power up their radiation shields. Moon-dwellers in low or no atmosphere enviroments are asked to remain indoors. The radiation dose from a solar pulse is usually not high enough to be immediately lethal, but can cause severe illness and complications that will later lead to death.

Ongoing Escalation

Since the Solar Invasion began, these pulses include waves of scourge. All pulses are bombarded from space to thin the wave and force the scourge to land on Mercury, where the ground forces of Penumbra handle any stragglers. The Defenders of Mercury have declined to answer inquiries about the projected arc of these attacks, in particular questions regarding how many of them are aimed towards other planets.   The Solar Observatory in Hun Kal was the premier research facility and nexus of knowledge about Sol and its cycles. The observatory was the first casualty of the Scorching of Mercury. The Interplanetary Solar Defence Council has recruited solar scientists from across the system to rebuild the knowledge lost at Hun Kal. Caduceus, the new artificial moon of Mercury, is dedicated to research of the sun, and in particular prediction of the next solar pulse.

I bet they look really cool! From afar. I wouldn't want to get close to it.

At the end of everything, hold onto anything.

Oh yeah! I've been putting together some references for it and I really really want to draw some solar pulses. Maybe if I hit 10k early?

I'm so glad we got an article about this! I was so intrigued when I read about the scourge and the fall of Mercury and the arrival of the scourge!

Thank you! I've been wanting to write this for a while!

The lore around the Chained Sun, the Scourge and now these Solar Pulses is all superb. Looking forward to more Annie!

Thank you! It's very fun when we get to get a glimpse at the sun, but like our own it's dangerous to look too close at it.

I'm glad real life solar pulses don't contain terrifying angel things intent on destroying us. I like that they are able to predict the pulses, at least.

I'm glad too. Our real life pulses (i think coronal mass ejection is the scientific term?) are less dangerous too, the radiation isn't enough to kill someone in orbit like it is in Solaris. We have space weather predicters in real life too, there's even a space weather report.

Imagine having to fight the literal sun...sending thoughts and prayers to all scientists and soldiers involved in the endeavor.
