Disaster on the Overpass (S1:E1)
Late Spring, 2020
Hanover, Freedom City
It was another ordinary afternoon. Commuters did their best to hurry home, but rush hour traffic led to bumper-to-bumper congestion. On an overpass near the industrial district, citizens wait for the gridlock to clear.
Then a shriek of metal-on-metal split the air. Brake lights flared off and on as cars tried to pull ahead, but there’s no space for anyone to move. The vehicles were stationary targets as a twelve-foot bipedal robot strode through the traffic. The robot grasped the bumper of the nearest car and—with almost casual grace—flipped the vehicle upside down on the edge of the overpass. The car’s occupant screamed as he dangled from his seatbelt.
Ron Cobbler, a newly hired P.E. teacher at Clairemont Academy, took a Lyfter home from work as he had been doing for almost a week now. Despite secretly being the Blue Comet, a speedster that can cross the country in less than a minute, Ron prefered to live as normal a life as possible. Ron still recalls the life he once led in Emerald City. It was just a month ago that Ron, as the Blue Comet, was part of the Emerald Defenders, a team of superheroes founded by Maximillian Mars to help protect his beloved city. When the city's Native American Cultural Center was broken into and The Fire and the Sun and the Moon statue was stolen during a night of the new moon, the Emerald Defenders responded immediately. Clues at the center led the team to Angel Island where they saw a ritual being performed by members of the Sons of the Sky using the stolen statue. As the team attempted to disrupt the ritual, a blinding flash of light engulfed them. Moments later, the Emerald Defenders found themselves transported back in time to 1792. There, they meet Longhunter and her husband, Dr. Clock. The two related how they were all trapped in a time loop within a small demi-plane called Avison bordered by an impenetrable mist. The Emerald Defenders learned that The Fire and the Sun and the Moon statue was the catalyst that would enable three hidden artifacts from opening a mystical gate and allow Lord Sanguine and his followers to escape beyond the mists. Working together, they were all able to retrieve three artifacts along with the stolen statue and put a stop to Lord Sanguine, a powerful vampire who drank the life-energy of mortals and hungered for the blood of gods. However, during Lord Sanguine's attempt to open the barrier, Dr. Clock's own ritual disrupted Lord Sanguine's. The small statue erupted in a blinding flash. That's when it happened. Sanguine disappeared along with his followers. At the same time, a temporal and dimensional rift opened pulling everyone into it. That's when the Blue Comet found himself pulled into a Prime-Earth that was both familiar and unfamiliar. After realizing he was in an alternate Earth-Prime, the Blue Comet tried to discover what happened but to no avail. It seemed that the Emerald Defenders had never existed in this Earth-Prime. The Silver Storm had never occurred either. According to news sources, Ron Cobbler was an elementary teacher in Emerald City who disappeared a month ago while kayaking near Angel Island. His body was never recovered and he was presumed dead. No known relatives existed, so no memorial service was held. Since his seemingly miraculous return, Ron found himself briefly at the center of attention but that soon faded. Realizing this new Earth-Prime could offer him a fresh new start, Ron moved across the country to Freedom City. There he found a job as a P.E. teacher at Claremont Academy, a secretive private high school for young metahumans. *** Ron Cobbler paid the Lyfter driver and stepped out of the car. It wasn't moving with traffic completely backed up on the overpass. In a flash, Ron put on his Blue Comet suit and sped to the other side of the overpass where the twelve-foot tall robot was about to let go off the vehicle. The Blue Comet tried to stop the car from falling over and landing on the road some forty feet below but it was too heavy. The car fell over. Miraculously, the trapped driver survived! The Blue Comet kept attacking the robot as it continued its onslaught against several abandoned vehicles on the overpass. In time and with no one getting killed, the Blue Comet was able to put a stop to the rampaging robot. Before any reporters could interview him, the Blue Comet sped away and headed home.
