Demography and Population

The city has become a booming trade-city of possibilities, and has attracted people from all around the region. From people as far up-river as Cinpruxt, to as far away as inhabitants of far islands or from savannah regions far north, the city is full of a variety of people seeking new opportunities. Because of its difficult terrain and volatile weather, some don't stay long, and continue on, causing the region to fascilitate not only the trade of goods but also the migration of people from far off lands. An islander might decide to sell everything and move to the city, only to be unable to find a place to live or to lose their belongings in a storm, and will decide to continue up-river, settling near the Lake. This sort of story isn't uncommon, and of the flock of people moving into the city, not all stay. However, enough do, creating a patchwork of people from all corners of the world.

The language of the city reflects its demographic diversity. Although the founding Kipsani still exist within the city, the language has diverged quite a lot from modern Psikai spoken in dialects by the marsh-dwelling neighbors. The local variety, Sinfosiloni, adapted to the growing number of foreign-language speakers. It includes words from many different languages. The many accents of immigrant learners has shifted pronunciation. As a result, it has diverged from modern Psikai greatly in vocabulary and significantly in phonology as well.

Trade & Transport

The city's foundations rest on trade. Mountains and desert lie along the coast, making entering the continent difficult. This opportune opening allows for exchange between inland nations and island or coastal ones. Sailors from islands meet river-faring traders and exchange goods. The seaworth vessels cannot travel along the river, nor the simple boats brave the ocean, and so this natural midway point compromised both ship-types. The booming port contributed to a increasing population, and so its fame drew even more attention from afar through hearsay. Soon enough the town grew into a port-city.

A large variety of goods are sold here. Glassworks, sugar, and pearls arrive from oceanic sailors. From northern savannah regions come diamonds, fruits, coffee, grains and cereals. The coastal regions of the Marshes of Epsani provide fresh fish and seaweed. Various other nations upstream bring paper, literature, gems and jewelry, leather, linen, pelts, tabacco and Shepherd's Peppermint.
