Battle of Ebben Field

The Battle of Ebben Field was the first pitched battle fought in the Doric-Aijian War, fought between the Army of Grand Duke Arttu I and the Army of Klenfeld Gedhert of Ostriken. The battle was fought just south of the village of Ebben upon the main road leading from Hestrja to Alcort, the battlefield on a small hill between two patches of forests north of the namesake Ebben fields. The Doric forces outnumbered the Aijians two to one and won a decisive victory as a consequence, an initial cavalry charge of three separate divisions of Aijian Lancers hit the Mixed Billmen units stationed upon the hill, causing much disorder in their ranks. This was nearly capitalised upon by a follow-up charge by the revolving Lancer units however a Heavy Doric Cavalry unit station in the western forest flanked the Aijian Lancers causing them to retreat, one unit being caught up amongst the Doric infantry, one routing entirely. The retreat of the lancers caused panic amongst the Aijian infantry, nearly half of which routed in turn. Klenfeld Gedhert attempted to reorganise his remaining forces however the Heavy Doric Cavalry soon decimated his sharpshooters on the left flank and the infantry upon the hill began to advance. The Aijian forces retreated and were briefly pursued by the Heavy Doric Cavalry.   It is believed that the battle largely occurred by accident, Klenfeld Gedhert having believed that the Grand Duke's army was still a day's ride away due to faulty reports from outriders, and sought instead to have travelled further north before engaging in battle at a more advantageous location. Unfortunately for the Klenfeld, the position he found himself in upon contact with the enemy was a perilous one, and despite ample opportunity to retreat, the Klenfeld was known as a particularly stubborn and proud commander, electing to fight pitched battle.

The Conflict

Deployment

Before the battle, Doric forces set up formation upon a small hill overlooking the road south from which the Aijian forces approached. The Doric formation consisted of Mixed Billmen units set up in front on the crest of the hill, behind this front line were three formations of archers and further behind which the Grand Duke, Surcount Markko and Heavy Cavalry were stationed. On the left flank, Surcount Hannu led a Heavy Cavalry Unit and two columned units of Mixed Billmen units. A reserve unit of Heavy Cavalry led by Marshall Osku remained hidden in a forest to the west. Aijian forces approached in a column formation with Heavy Cavalry in front, infantry behind them and a Cavalry unit led by Klenfeld Gedhert in the rear. A unit of crossbowmen was placed on the west flank.

The infantry units deployed in front of the Grand Duke were largely made of Yarrow Billmen and listmen from the heartlands, most of the Bowmen coming from the Baneswood wherein the locals are generally skilled at archery. The cavalry units were generally formed of minor noblemen, those from the heartlands for the flank guard and main guard of the Grand Duke, Surcount Hannu had noblemen from his surcounty amongst his unit. Marshal Osku had the noblemen of the Surcounties of Pilkala and Kilncross and their knights amongst his ranks, these dismounted knights set up in the trees north of the road. The infantry positioned in front of Surcount Hannu had spearmen from Vilhma and the western slopes of his demesne, some of the more renowned footsoldiers of Doria.

Battlefield

The battlefield was largely open, only lightly cropped fields and the wooded areas adjacent to the road provided any real obstacle, the fields easily manoeuvrable in the early season of Saati. The gradual hill that the Doric forced had formed up upon was no such an incline as to greatly inconvenience an opposing force but provided a good position from which to view the forward land and to charge from. Due to the fairly wide formation that the Doric forces took, communication between the units would be undertaken by Grand Marshal Pentti Woljoka who was said to have been galloping across the field along with his personal guard one of whom was holding a large banner of his and the Grand Duke's personal coat of arms.
