Sir Ruprant of Gellenfort

Sir Ruprant Bertain

Sir Ruprant Bertain was a prominent knight within the Noble Republic of Aijia, where he held an influential holding at Gellenfort. His home at Gellenfort has been under the Bertain banner for several centuries and is excellently located to project control over the land north and west of the junction of the Jaer and Bryn rivers. Ruprant would become distinguished as a fine gentleman and warrior early in his adult life, given the lucrative position of house bodyguard to protect King-Elect Urias Norgelding after much bribery and swaying from his father - a position which would see his status rise far above his knightly station.   Though the political landscape of Aijia was tepid and little combat could be experienced in the region, a young Ruprant was eager to make his name in battle. He would have to wait, not until the War of the Aldergaard Peninsula would he see true action, fighting under the banner of the Lord of Roendhall, cousin of the now Hedfeld Urias Norgelding. Ruprant is said to have fought well, a competent commander of men and a boon to the eventual victorious Toranian army. It would not be long after Rurpant's return from this war that his father, Sir Gerwud IV of Gellenfort, would pass due to complications of gout. Not only would this entail his inheritance of the estates of Gellenfort but also would lead to the acquisition of a partner to produce an heir after many years of bachelorhood. Ruprant would come to capture quite the impressive match in that of the rich heiress Lady Marwoden, their joint holding affording the couple influence and wealth to rival the Klenfelds' of the Noble Republic.   Their marriage would produce two daughters and a son, an impressive feat as their young son Edmile would be born as his mother turned forty-two. Ruprant would once again be given the opportunity of battle as he turned fifty when the Doric-Aijian War commenced. Unfortunately, his record during the war would not meet the expectation of his previous exploits, though perhaps overshadowed by the more egregious errors of more senior commanders. His first taste of battle would come at the Battle of Ebben Field, where poor reconnaissance and idle command from his senior, Klenfeld Gedhert, led to a swift route of the Aijian army. Ruprant, who was commanding a flank of crossbowmen, was lucky to escape the enemy and carry out a small campaign of skirmishes on the occupying Doric forces thereafter. Though his reputation was not seriously brought into question, Ruprant would not command in battle for the remainder of the war.
