Klenfeld Gedhert "the Ungainly" of Ostriken
Klenfeld Gedhert Vallaryse
Klenfeld Gedhert is an Aijian noble from the House of Vallaryse, a prominent and wealthy trading family that finds its roots in the town of Ostriken set to the north of Aijia's capital, Asjaer. Born the eldest of three brothers, Gedhert was brought up to be a leader, a man of immense will and sensibility. Perhaps along the way, the young noble's upbringing left more than its fair share of marks upon this goal, a particular incident of note was when Gedhert was but just 14 years old and madly in love with the young Lady of Alcort who would become betrothed to the older, and more handsome, Sir Urias of Hulswoden. Despite Gedherts superior titles which he stood to inherit, the vast wealth which he would one day command, he would still be burdened by his name, a House of traders turned noble, a fact that Urias was all to happy to remind him of during the few brief encounters they shared at various courts on parallel missions to woo the Lady Alcort. Gedhert was driven to rage and immense jealousy upon the confirmation of Urias and Lady Alcort, he formerly demanded a duel of honour due to the insults which Urias had levelled at his house. Of course, duels between nobles were illegal, and yet one took place between Gedhert and Urias, both armed with sabres. Gedhert was destined to lose the duel, an eventual cut from Urias struck the young noble at the right hip and rendered him unable to stand. With his opponent incapacitated, Urias declared himself victorious and left the scene, Gedhert bleeding horridly with little more than the hurried help of his second.
As a man, now with his great inheritance to his name, Gedhert would become known as an intensely proud man, never bearing an insult to his name or honour, as well as an incredibly stubborn man, perhaps which greatly hampered his already impressive wealth through shrewd negotiation. He thought himself a warrior and had strived to meet others in battle wherever he could, though such a thing in the highly organised land of Aijia was a rare occasion. Regardless, Gedherts wealth had allowed him to assemble a famously impressive array of men-at-arms at his disposal, having warriors at his banner at a strength that could rival a king. When war came with the Grand Duchy, he would finally have the chance to use it.
The Doric-Aijian War would be an abject failure for Gedhert personally, with himself being captured, his grand force being swiftly routed and his home of Ostriken being thoroughly looted by its occupiers. The only battle that he would take part in would be the Battle of Ebben Field where his army was routed after a surprise engagement with the enemy due to poor scouting, Gedhert himself being captured by some foot soldiers under the command of Surcount Hannu of Sjolund. It was said that Gedhert was too busy during the battle fiddling with his armour, having his squires adjust plates there and tighten straps here, so much so that the enemy was upon him before he could respond. An act that would earn him his unfortunate moniker.
