Soreilia
Pronunciation: sor-REE-lee-a
Map Index: E-5
Location: Northeast coast of Beorlan
Description: Located along the eastern coast of the Soreilian Peninsula, these small port cities stand inside tall stone walls and heavy fortifications. In a land of rugged geography, the cities of Aruzan, Dehira, Karinel, Seylora, and Uruzhan, prosper as bustling seaports dedicated to worldwide trade.
Residents: The lands of Soreilia are predominantly populated with refugees who fled the destruction of the Kishari Empire during the Great Cataclysm, carrying with them the legacy of their language and culture.
Primary Population: Kishari
Secondary Population: None
Minor Population: Arn, Shenn, Valmyrri, Varynn
Government and Politics: This federation of wealthy port cities is nominally ruled by the Grand Huzhirr. However, the real power lies with the Soreilian Merchants Council, who spend most of their energy in constant competition with each other, with each city's council members scheming and deftly maneuvering to gain advantage over the others. This leaves the Grand Huzhirr as a mostly a powerless figurehead who presides at ceremonies in his elaborate palace but figures little in the day to day running of the kingdom. Despite this, this federation of cities manages to unite just enough to defend their realm.
Economy: Soreilia's thriving economy is built upon trade. Their merchant ships venture fearlessly across distant seas, bringing exotic goods to the port cities while markets overflow with merchandise from all corners of the world, creating a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Military: Each city maintains a formidable, well-trained, and equipped military force as well as a small navy. Mounted scouts ceaselessly patrol the borders, while patrol ships constantly are on the lookout for pirates and coastal raiders. However, coordination between the various forces is often a challenge. The threat of piracy constantly threatens merchant ships that ply Soreilia's port cities but the problem remains nearly intractable, due to the nearby city-state of Khu’s policy of giving pirates a safe haven.
The other grave threat to the cities lies in the relentless orc raids from the neighboring land of Kraal to the south. The orcs of this dark land frequently march forth and savagely attack without reason. The defensive strength of the cities has kept them at bay, but the danger of another attack always looms. The only good to come of this has been an increased level of cooperation between competing cities who see the need to forge a common defense.
History: The history of Soreilia is one of resilience and adaptation. The kingdom was established following the Great Cataclysm, as these new coastal cities grew rapidly due to Kishari refugees seeking a new home. Over time, these settlements evolved into powerful cities. While Vhoon had always been a source of danger, the peninsula remained relatively safe until the arrival of a great orc horde 381 years ago. The powerful orc army quickly seized the whole long southern arm of the peninsula and renamed it Kraal. Dark times followed as the orcs initiated relentless raids on the merchant city-states, forcing them to fortify their defenses to survive. The orcs also have incorporated some type of magic that keeps the Kraal Peninsula perpetually covered by heavy clouds that block daylight and bring about day that gets no brighter than twilight.
Today: In the shadow of their own past and facing the threats of the present, the people of Soreilia continue to persevere and to safeguard their way of life, ensuring a prosperous future amid the ever-changing tides of fate.
