Sulrassil

Bestower of Breath and Bringer of Life

One of the Elven gods, she has a particularly ambiguous position within the pantheon. This is indicated by her name: to outsiders, the title Lady of Breath does not evoke a particular idea of her domain. As with all the gods, her domain consists of three aspects: a part of the sky (the Road of Cloud), an element of nature (fresh water), and a social principle (life).
  • The Road of Cloud is a haze of light seen behind the stars on a dark night. It is said to be a path leading from the created world to the heavens, although some older tales say it is the Firmament, made visible by Sulrassil's breath on its surface.
  • The translation of the Elven concept of "breath" can be confusing. In short, it refers to any form of water smaller than the sea, be it a body, a flow, or a precipitant. Rivers, ponds, springs, waterfalls, fog, clouds, rain, snow, and dew, are all part of her domain. To put it another way, she is associated with all water that is not salty. Because all of these features are beneficial to plants, she is invoked regularly by farmers and other agricultural workers, especially in (relatively) dry areas.
  • As the Bringer of Life, she is associated with new life, be it of tree, beast, or person. She is invoked by mothers-to-be, especially around the time of birth, as well as besought for protection of the young.

Tenets of Faith

The orders devoted to her are medical professionals, especially midwives (though there are orders that include men). They maintain hospitals which were originally devoted to aiding pregnancy and birth, but have expanded over the centuries to help any who have a medical complaint. In addition to active practice, there are many priests that study diseases and health issues, seeking their cures.   Prayers to Sulrassil are spoken aloud, usually to a specially trained priest who will hear the prayer and offer solace or, when possible, direct aid. In dire times, a sacrifice will be made by taking an item of value and dropping it into a deep pond or well.

Mental characteristics

Morality & Philosophy

Sulrassil is a kind-hearted and generous bestower of gifts, and bears a motherly attitude. Although kind, she is no fool, and is particularly skilled at sensing hidden malicious intent and harmful magic. In times of strife, she does not involve herself directly, instead healing those in need while calling for the aid of those gods with a more martial aspect.
