Old Afespían

This was the culture of the people of the Afesp prior to the cultural revolution of the Tőyōtkan Empire. It was marked by the separation between the upper class and lower class. The upper classes had very different standards than the lower classes, and in certain places, the lower classes adopted those standards, but most places it didn't, and the lower class way of life eventually won out with the rise of King Míreklmőt.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The lower class spoke Old Őntazra, which was similar to Old Eltuven. However, the Upper Class spoke both Old Őntazra and a version of The Old Tongue.

Culture and cultural heritage

They view kings and queens as gods and goddesses, and the closer you are to the monarchs (in class), the closer you are to godhood, and thus the more power you have. They believed that gods could die, but only a god could kill another god.   They had a very specific set of views surrounding magic. There were three kinds of magic, Natural, Unnatural, and Demonic.
  1. Natural:
    • Sorcerers, people born with magic. Magical beings, like fairies, unicorns, and many more.
    Unnatural:
    • Wizards, people who learnt magic. Warlocks, people who made a deal to gain magic.
    Demonic:
    • Primarily considered for the naturally evil creatures, like werewolves, illithids, ghouls, and more. However, sorcerers could be considered unnatural. If you were born with powers that were outside the use of spells, that was considered demonic.

Common Etiquette rules

Hospitality is regarded highly amongst the lower class, this had origins in the fear of offending someone of a higher class than you if you did not treat them perfectly. However, the lower class citizens eventually became grateful for it, and continue the tradition with much appreciation toward each other. Often they give and receive gifts, such as flowers, food, or other objects.   In the upper class, it was expected that you would treat the host with kindness, as the higher you are in the class system, the closer you are to the King/Queen, which meant you were the closest to a God. Never would an individual of a higher class be the guest of someone of a lower class unless it was something absolutely crucial, but even then, the individual of the lower class would invite the upper classman to invite them for discussion.   The lower class have a deep love for the environment they live in, as well as their being poor, so they attempt to conserve resources and care for the environment as best they can, such as sustainable agriculture, and respect for the natural surroundings.   The upper class have a much less strong sense of love for the environment, so they do not care to conserve their resources, and will often force the lower classes to abandon their "silly" sustainable agriculture for quick food and quicker money.

Common Dress code

Amongst the lower class they often wore something simple, women tended to wear a red undershirt and long skirt with a something going over that of some design, usually a simple tartan design. The thing going over could be a cloak or a simple covering of the underwear. If they can afford it, sometimes they might have a simple necklace. Often individuals with longer hair will tie it into a tight knotted braid. Men will often wear a similar style to women, only the colour would be brown. They wear a simple cloak with the same tartan design. Sometimes, these designs would signify what family you were in, to help distinguish you from another family.   Amongst the upper class, they often wore very dull colours, but the dresses themselves were very poofy, on both men and women. Women wore skirts, while men wore frilled pants.

Art & Architecture

Art is considered to be beneath the upper class, they never dabble in it. However, it is considered very important amongst the lower class. They carve things into the sides of waystones and pillars. There are many rocks they carved simple drawings on. Waystones they would use decorated writing. Pillars were often vandalized with art, they would often be in praise of some ancient story. The upper class eventually ignored it, and though it was illegal, if you were caught vandalizing it, usually you would not be punished unless it was in defiance of a lord.   Music is very common in Afespían culture as it is played in almost every scenario of a person's life. They have different styles of music played in different contexts. Birthdays have a style of music played, festivals have a style of music played, feasts have a style of music played, war has a style of music played. Everything event in Afespían culture has a style of music. Festivals use a music which is very soulful and fast, but it is a steady tempo, as to dance to. War has a style of music which is very basic, usually with woodwinds and drums to play, it is a marching style with a perfectly steady tempo. Feasts have a similar style to festivals, which is very soulful and fast, but the tempo can vary as there are usually no dancers to accompany it.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Afespíans reject the notion of burial, as it traps the soul into the earth, instead they lay the body out in the forest, allowing for the person to give back to the world what they had taken from it in life. By allowing for nature to retake the body, they show their love of nature, and respect for all the life within their forests. The lower class will put a special rock, with the name of the individual carved into it, within the person's hand to act as a tombstone for the family, and others, to return to the place of their death.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

They have a love for the natural look of a human, however, they do like simple things like flowers in the hair or pretty clothes. They have an interest in Males who look physically fit, for it seems like that person is strong and wouldn't expect you to help them constantly, but would be able to help you if you needed it. Females tend to be considered attractive if they have good features. A nice body mostly. However, amongst the lower class it is not usually considered necessary to have the perfect body, amongst both males and females. What most individuals consider attractive, amongst the lower classes, are inner qualities. Kindness, wisdom, compassion, and the ability to guide and educate is highly regarded.

Gender Ideals

Males and Females do not tend to be considered different, however, there is a standard beginning that women are nothing more than objects for pleasure and children. It is not highly widespread, and is mostly considered this by the upper class. Whereas the lower classes consider men and women to be the same. The idea of crossdressing amongst the upper class is stigmatized, only being viewed as a good thing if it is used for some kind of pleasure for someone of the opposite sex. Amongst the lower classes, it did not matter if you cross dressed.

Courtship Ideals

Person A would present a gift to Person B and then Person B would go on a picnic with Person A, and if the picnic goes well, then they are now dating.
