Bastionheim

Intro

Bastionheim is a large underground metropolis, in the middle of Rimeterra. It is built in several levels, where the lower ones are made up of mostly workers, guilds, workshops, forges and the mines. The upper levels are more focused on housing, governing, the noble houses and the wealthy, temples of worship, libraries and a few guilds.

The People of Bastionheim

Ohh the people.. yess... hmm. *Cough* They sure are rough and tough. Too rough even. They have their fairness. *Cough* Hmm.. just do not be one of them witches or.. mages. Noo. We don't like those. Careful there. Work hard and you will earn our respect. Ohh.. I am old. *Cough* Too old.

Senses

Sight

  • Bastionheim is generally very lit up, either by torches along most paths, Glow Silver in the cliffs or painted around walkways. There are areas with molten rock flowing down the ravines or out of holes in the cliff side. There are of course also areas that are less lit, such as between or behind buildings or less populated zones. You will see a lot of smoke, steam and dust on the lower levels of the city, due to the many forges, blacksmiths or other manufacturers. This often obscures the visibility in certain areas. On the upper levels this isn't much of an issue, as these are for residential purposes, high-born and the nobles as well as apothecaries and temples. Those areas are kept fairly clean.

Smell

  • On the lower levels especially you will walk around smelling smog, dust, carbon dioxide, or otherwise burnt aromas. If you are not from the city, this is not pleasant for a very long time. The people of Bastionheim are used to this, and aren't bothered a whole lot. Some times these smells of course get more intense when the forges are burning.

Feel

  • There is a warm feeling almost anywhere around Bastionheim, this is due to the forges heating up the certain areas during time of work, but also the big lava flows provide a good source of heat. The many torches help a bit as well, which are placed along all the streets in the city. On the lower levels some of the buildings are coated in a thin layer of stone dust, soot or coal from the forges. This means many inhabitants walk around with scarfs over their mouths, but this isn't an issue everywhere. The upper levels are not very much affected by this.

Hearing

  • On the lower levels it is common to be hearing the beating and clanking of metals, water running, molten rock flowing and the occasional shouting around the streets. Certain areas are busier than others, such as The Red Bazaar .

Dangers of the Arcane

Most people of Bastionheim don't like, or are scared of, the use of arcane magic, which is mostly outlawed and ilegal and looked down upon. People have been punished for using arcane magic in the past, and so it is not a common thing to see anymore. People think it is unnatural, chaotic, dangerous and it is hard to understand, so they just want to not think about it and not see it around them. There are organisations installed to track down the use of magic use, and dealing with it, if necessary.

Demographics

Dominant Races

  • Dwarfs are the most dominant race in Bastionheim, they were the founding race, they built it. You see a dwarf in every corner, blacksmith, district and larger establishment. They rule the city, and they are at every council meeting. You cannot avoid the dwarfs, and you shouldn't try to. They are connected to everything.
  • Gnomes have a pretty good foothold in the city, you will see them in every district but maybe not every second of your day. They run some of the major services and shops, and you will likely work with a few of them on a day to day basis. They are fast workers, and get a lot of stuff done in a hurry.

Minorities

  • The Half-Orcs of the city run a few shops and cervices, they are the movers of the city, because of their height and general good strength. You will see a lot of them working in and around the mines, moving carts with materials and tools. They usually don't live around the nobles, but rather in the bottom parts or poorer of the city.
  • Humans are a rare sight around the mines or the lower class. They usually live higher up, and are likely to be nobles or service providers. They are not too fond of the half-blood races, like half-orcs, half-elfs or goliaths.

Enclaves

  • Halflings have concentrated themselves around one area of the city, on The Warm Cliff and run a part of it, pretty much to themselves. You won't often see halflings, unless you live in The Warm Cliff, or do business there. They fled to the city after they got attacked, 8 years ago, in the hills east of Bastionheim. Before that, there were no large groupings of halflings in the city.

Groups

  • There are 3 families of Dragonborn in the city, and they each have their own line of work. So unless you work with them, you are very unlikely to see them at all. They stick to themselves, as they are not liked among all races.

Individuals

  • There are a few Goliaths in the city, one is working in the mines, where he also lives. Another works as a builder, and you won't see her very often, unless you are a builder yourself. The third and forth work in rivaling blacksmiths near the Pillar of Hope.
  • You won't ever see a Goblins unless you work as a city guard, as one of them work as a knife sharpener. The other goblins are either found around the forges, helping their owners or stealing from easy targets.
  • The 2 Vampires there are known to reside in the city, keep very much to themselves. One is an adviser for Orimir Maell but no one knows why or how. The other roams around the open stretch, picking off and killing the weak, sick or beggars, kinda cleaning up the streets.

Natural Resources

In the mines of Bastionheim, there are found all sorts of common materials, rocks, metals and minerals. Some of the more unique ones are Glow Silver and Memory Granite , which the city heavily uses for varies purposes. The people of Bastionheim would rather use all of these natural resources in the city itself, but the quantity is vast and the quality is very sought after outside of the city. This is how some of the trade routes sprouted. It has been made ilegal to export Glow Silver out of the city by Orimir Maell . Which means it is a good that people smuggle, and make a lot of money on, if they can get it out of the city.
