Kosciuszko Park
By 2200 CE Utopia had grown to considerable size and it in effect had become the de facto capital of the settlement, the city council decided to build a park dedicated to the person that had made it all possible. Naturally there were many who thought that at last Ryu'ichi Dyson would be getting the recognition that he deserved. Alas it was not to be.
The Utopia Metropolitan Council aka UMC was effectively an arm of UNPALAZ and it was via UNPALAZ that it gained its funding. So UN agenda played a significant role in determining where the park was to be situated, who was to build it and whom it would be named for.
Given the Provisional Authority's dislike of Dyson and Dysonists in general, their hero was never going to get a guernsey. Instead it was announced in 2201 CE that the proposed park would be named in honour of Jadzia Kosciuszko, Secretary General of the UN in 2073 who negotiated with Brazil, China and the African nations for the development of the UNCV Ascension.
It was deemed that without the efforts of SG Kosciuszko the entire project would have faltered and no one would have settled Lazarus (the Euro Japs & Sov Am colonists disputed this claim esp given they had started building their vessles around the same time). Thus the council felt that she was a suitable figure for which the park should be named. A statue constructed from images and recording in the archives of Ascension stands at the centre of the park.
Construction began in 2202 CE and lasted for five years. The park was officially opened in 2208 CE by newly appointed UNPALAZ Chief Executive Officer (CEO Isaiah Ambrose Galbraith. CEO Galbraith would serve for fifteen years as the head of UNPALAZ before returning back to the home system on the Calypso.
Kosciuszko Park in the interim would become a major feature of the city, and a place where apparatchiks, particular those from the various government buildings nearby would often spend their lunch break. In a sprawling metropolis like Utopia the park is a true breath of fresh air with its greenswards and trees. Numerous bike trails criss cross the area and on a good day (when the weather is clement) countless people gather to in the park. Admission is free.
