Five Tribes
The Five Tribes are a group of Native Americans within the Kingdom of America. The Five Tribes consist of the Cherokee, Creek, Chocktaw, Chipisaw, and Seminoles, and primarily reside in their territory of Sequoyah.
Structure
The government of the Five Tribes is overseen by the Principal Chiefs, who act as an Executive Council. These Chiefs serve a term of four years, and work in a government-to-government with he appointed governor of the region, the Prince Regent of Sequoyah.
History
The Five Tribes, originally called the Five Civilized Tribes, are a set of American Indian tribes found originally throughout the American Southeast. The tribes had a complex dynamic with the American government going back to the times as a colony. After the American Revolution, the American citizens sought land beyond the Appalachian Mountains. This saw a series of conflicts, including the conflicts against the Seminole tribes in Spanish Florida.
These conflicts came to a head during the tenure of Chancellor John Quincy Adams, 2nd Duke of Massachusetts. Adams initially opposed Indian removal from their traditional tribal lands and instead sided with previously negotiated treaties. However, an unauthorized militia in Georgia threatened to exterminate the tribes on desired lands, and thus forced the Federal Government to intervene. It was agreed that the Five Tribes were to be granted land in the territory of West Florida, as it was deemed less desirable by the white Americans than the agricultural rich East Florida. It was agreed that the Federal Government would fund and oversee the relocation, and the tribes would be reimbursed. The compromise was supported upon by King Augustus II and Premier Henry Clay.
However, while the Principal Chiefs agreed to the treaty, many within the tribes refused to relocate. This caused a series of skirmishes wherein primarily the Black Seminoles refused to leave their ancestral lands. These skirmishes were quickly won by the army, and many were subsequently forced to move without reimbursement.
During the Texas Rebellion, many of the Five Tribes were conflicted as to who to side with. The Tribes held the practice of slavery, and thus sympathized with the Texas rebels. However, King Augustus negotiated greater autonomy within Sequoyah for the tribes, establishing a "nation within a nation" system rather than statehood. Crown Prince William was designated as the first Prince Regent.
