Principal Chief
The title of Principal Chief is given to one of five members of the territory of Sequoyah. The Inter-Tribal Council of the Five Tribes works closely with the office of the Prince Regent of Sequoyah as governors of the territory.
Appointment
The title of Principal Chief is elected among the tribal elders for a term of four years, with a President of the Inter-Tribal Council being rotated every year.
Responsibilities
A Principal Chief is responsible for upholding tribal traditions, customs, and interests among the Kingdom of America in a government to government relationship. This is with the cooperation of the Prince Regent or their appointed dignitary.
History
When Chancellor John Quincy Adams was faced with a possible conflict between the residents of Georgia and the Seminole tribes, he worked with King Augustus II to find a resolution. The Georgian residents wished to claim the lands the Five Tribes resided, desiring the resources and fertile lands. The Principal Chiefs of all of the Five Tribes, the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Creek (Muskogee) Nations, desired their traditional lands free of the white settlers.
King Augustus and Chancellor Adams made a deal. In exchange for their relocation, the federal government would compensate them with money and lands, and assist in the relocation efforts. The territory of West Florida was chosen, as it was in close proximity to the traditional lands, thus aiding the cost of relocation, as well as the lands were not as fertile or desirable to the white settlers as East Florida. Most of the tribes voted in favor of the deal, aside from a great number of warriors. The Great Trek occurred in 1830, relocating nearly 60,000 natives to what would become the territory of Sequoyah.
