Henry Clay
Henry Clay was an American politician who served as the ninth Chancellor of America from 1834 to 1842. He attempted to pass the emancipation laws introduced under his predecessor, John Quincy Adams, but had little initial success. In order to gain the support of the Republican Party and the Unionist Party, he compromised and agreed to the Mexican Purchase. This, however, led to the Texas Rebellion and the subsequent enforcement of federal will. For his leadership in putting down the rebellion, Clay was named Duke of Kentucky by King Augustus II.
