Fire Islands

Secret Islands of the West

The Fire Islands are a cluster of six islands off the southwest coast of the Northern Continent, five smaller land masses stand guard around a central volcanic island that never ceases to smoke. These lands are separated from the outside world by a thick veil of mist mixed with volcanic ash, the smoke spills out of the top of the central peak and encircles a wide area around the islands which makes them dangerous to approach using conventional methods. Despite this outward appearance, the islands themselves are temperate with lush jungles and forests that cover the islands with a few jutting features of rocky terrain on the smaller islands. These are the ancestral homelands of the Nephilim, a species that carries blood ties to sinister creatures that have since been expelled from Isekai.
A mysterious land of beauty and danger, closed off from the outside world with a wall of whispers and stories of horror. It is said that vast treasures and dark secrets are hidden in the deep waters and glittering sands of the central island. Secrets that could bring about a second calamity of the demon lords.
— Unknown Wanderer
These islands are an exotic location that few outsiders will ever travel to due to the closed nature of Nephilim society. These lands have colorful flowers, varieties of fruit that no longer grow anywhere else in the world, and creatures that have adapted to life in a unique environment. All of the islands are covered in a stifling aura that even those with little magical ability can detect easily, it settles on the water and the air making each feel thick and heavy. It is said that this atmospheric condition makes the islands an excellent place to pursue physical strength and conditioning, though the few travelers that have ventured here have reported symptoms of Stem Poisoning from overexertion. Plant and animal life has adapted to the conditions that hang around the islands, creating hardy variants of both jungle and marine life that are resistant to magic.   Several specialty poisons and medicines can be derived from the jungles on these islands and this area is also known to have a high concentration of rare metals such as Arcane Steel. Despite such extensive wealth to be had, relations with the Nephilim are rare and travel to the group of islands is considered dangerous. Just off shore, many variety of sea monsters and Krakens lay in wait, some seeking to waylay unwary travelers and others silently watch for relics of ancient power to leave. Those that are welcomed to any of the islands must brave creatures of the deep, a disorienting cloud of smoke, and a suffocating concentration of magical energy in the air but an alliance forged with the Nephilim is said to be forever.

Geography

The Fire Islands are a group of land masses that hold deep jungles and expansive beaches with a network of vibrant coral reefs that expand between and around the islands for miles. While the islands themselves are nowhere near the size of the grand continents in the distance they boast a variety of landscapes that make them an intriguing destination for brave explorers. The six islands are named: Spathí, Tóxo, Sfyrí, Dóry, and Chéri, with the central volcanic island of Tragoúdi.   There are beaches, deep jungles, and caves of incredible length and depth that lead to Káto. The waters around the islands are a paradise for many types of marine life, the coral reefs near the islands create a sanctuary that wards out many larger creatures with their unique structure and biology. These reefs are said to feed on a variety of magical creatures and act as natural predators for some of the more dangerous marine life of Isekai. Legends say that the coral is an organism with a degree of intellect that grants sentience, but Scholars from the outside world have been unable to confirm or deny it.   Regardless of what storms plague the seas nearby, the direct area of the islands seems to be sheltered from hurricanes and storms that would destroy their shores. Only gentle rains and the occasional bolt of lightning
Fire Islands
The Fire Islands are one of the more secluded places of Vóreios, with little being known about the ring of islands other than their ancient ties to the Nephilim and the constant minor volcanic eruptions that spout fire and smoke into the air. Many tend to stray away from this place due to the Drizzle from the fog that is known to cause many to lose their will or even their minds.
will grace the islands to break apart the days of temperate sunshine. The volcano of the central island constantly smokes, occasionally spouting ash but there are no records of an eruption since the Eldritch War. Old tales say that the eruption of the volcano proclaims the arrival of a Demon lord.

Ecosystem

Volcanic ash and smoke constantly escape the volcano of the central island. This mixes with natural fog that floats across the ocean and turns into a thick cloud that clings to the waves and never dissipates. The cloud blocks out sunlight, wind, and most varieties of magic making it so that magic cannot be used to view the islands or teleport to them. When combined with jagged rocks and large coral reefs, the waters within fifty miles of the islands are quite dangerous to navigate without the knowledge of the Nephilim.   The coral reefs that inhabit the water between the islands and surrounding them for several miles are some of the most beautiful and diverse in the world. It is said that their unique biology makes the area a sanctuary for many of the smaller creatures of the vast ocean. Large creatures such as sea serpents and Krakens are warded off either by the structure of the reef making the area inhospitable or through other unknown means.

Fauna & Flora

Sage Parrot
Sage Parrots are one of the more legendary creatures of the Fire Islands as their mimicry is especially useful for spellcasters. Wizards and others who use magic may keep these birds as familiars.
The Fire Islands are home to birds and insects that are not found elsewhere in the world. Sage Parrots can imitate the vocal components required for spells, Memory Leeches that feed on the memories of creatures in addition to their blood, and Noxious Beetles that explode into a cloud of dangerous acid capable of eating through steel. These creatures inhabit deep jungles in habitats that the rest of the world has not seen nor interfered in for thousands of years, harkening back to a wilder time that few except the Ancient Fey may remember.   Flora in this area is diverse, with combinations of colors that can invoke hypnosis or paralysis with fruits and pollens that are the unknown cures to dangerous diseases. One of the more renowned is the Echo Herb, a rare flower that grows in the highest parts of the jungle canopy. This plant grafts itself to other branches of the larger trees around it to ensure that it reaches towards the sun. If harvested in the light of dawn, it can be ground into a powder that cures curses and selective mutism but if harvested under the light of a full moon, it becomes a sinister poison.   Unlike other places in the world, megafauna is not common here being restricted to a few varieties of bugs and birds. The Stormwind Albatross is a distant relation of the Rukh, a giant seafaring bird that fishes in the deep waters for large creatures. These creatures are regarded as sacred on the Fire Islands and some of them have been tamed for use during ceremonies and in the service of noble families.   The marine life in this area is full of small shellfish, colorful herbivores and
omnivores, predators that would find no home out in the larger ocean thrive here. A variety of sharks, starfish, large anemones, large crustaceans, and eels with magical properties can be found here. Due to the nature of the coral reef, it is not uncommon to find varieties of marine life that have adapted and developed minor magical properties due to feeding on the reef itself.

Points of Interest

Landmarks on the Fire Islands are tied to the geographical barriers that the Nephilim have lived alongside for centuries, some of them are considered sacred areas.

Reef of Ommon

The Reef of Ommon is the largest coral reef in the upper areas of the ocean that the light touches. In total it is estimated to cover a million square miles. The Nephilim claim that the reef is sentient and there may be much more of it that we cannot observe.

Peak of Kaie

The large volcano that rises up out of the central island of the archipelago is comparable to some of the large mountains elsewhere in the world but the peak is said to have been much higher in ancient times before the first demon lord found Isekai and battled against Varell. It is said that Varell vanquished the demon lord by striking him down through the peak of the mountain and far under the ground where the magma was awakened forever due to the terrific crater.

Ashen Jungles

The jungles that fill each island with life are said to have a mystic property at certain times of the year. During the early winter and late spring, the cloud of fog and ash that surrounds the Fire Islands will stray close and seep into some of the jungles. It is said that anyone not of Nephilim descent will forever lose their way in this mist and never be found again.

Myths of the Fire Islands

Many myths surround the Fire Islands, most of them have to do with either the demonic warriors and entities that held residence here thousands of years ago while others relate to the various unexplained phenonemon that existed despite the appearance of sinister beings. The most well known is the cloud of fog and ash that separates the islands from the rest of the world.

Everflowing Fog

The smoke that rises from the volcano on the central island never ceases despite season and weather. Thick bellows of ash and smoke rise from the depths of the world and drift slowly out to sea before sinking and merging with fog and foam from the water. This creates a fog that disorients sailors and prevents a variety of magical effects. The result is that few can navigate it, none can scry through it nor teleport through it with magic, though it is said that Nephilim that have mastered their bloodline traits can see through it as if it were a clear day.
